Dr David McBean appointed new MSBM Executive Director
Dr David McBean has been appointed Executive Director of Mona School of Business andManagement, effective March 1, 2018. Dr McBean succeeds Mr Michael Williams, who had beenacting in the position since 2016. Dr McBean joins MSBM with more than 20 years' experience as asenior executive, serving across the airline, telecommunications (commercial and regulatory), IT andmedia industries in the Caribbean.
Eco Structure pitch wins UWIVincent HoSang VentureCompetition
The Finals and Awards Ceremony of the16th staging The Vincent HoSang Universityof the West Indies Venture Competition(UWIVC) was held on January 26, 2018.Team Eco Structures emerged as championsamong the five finalists and presented awinning solution to solid waste managementwhich poses a huge threat to Jamaica'snatural environment. The UWIVC wasintroduced in November 2002 with theobjective to encourage members of theUniversity community to use their talents andskills to harness ideas and opportunities thatcan be grown into full-fledged operatingbusinesses.

UWI student entrepreneurs winNational Business ModelCompetition
University of West Indies (UWI) studentowners of a market research company,Queritel, emerged winners of the NationalBusiness Model Competition, earning $2million and an all-expense paid trip torepresent Jamaica at the InternationalBusiness Model Competition in the USA inMay 2018. Mona School of Business andManagement (MSBM), with the support ofthe Faculty of Science and Technology, ledthe coordination of UWI’s participation in thecompetition, providing the teams withmentorship, training and support.

15 young professionals to trainin NCB, UWI digital lab
Leading the way in Jamaica’s move towardsan agile workforce, National CommercialBank Jamaica Limited (NCB) has committeditself to nurturing a new generation of digitalprofessionals. To this end, on Friday,February 16, 2018 members of the NCBteam met with a multi-disciplined consortiumfrom Mona School of Business andManagement (MSBM) and The University ofthe West Indies’ (UWI) Department ofComputer Science, to launch a pilot projectaimed at providing highly customized digitaltraining to 15 student interns.

MSBM in partnership toaddress regional digital skillstraining issues
Mona School of Business and Management(MSBM) is joining regional and internationalpartners to research and address thechallenge of the sustainable delivery ofonline education and digital skills training.The project, which is being funded by theCanadian government, targets young Haitianwomen in both urban and rural settings, 300of whom will be trained between 2018 and2019 and assisted in securing onlineemployment opportunities in overseasmarkets.

In an effort to take the Jamaica PublicService (JPS) to new levels of operationalexcellence, the company has embarked on astrategic innovative leadership developmentprogramme - iLead. iLead, acronym forLeadership, Excellence and Development,operationalises the JPS's baseline forsuccession planning within the organisation.Following assessment, a personaldevelopment programme is crafted for eachparticipant, which is executed in partnershipwith the Mona School of Business andManagement, Knowledge Works (localproviders of Harvard Business Informationmaterial), LPD Hall and Associates, andAction Coach.

The events -held in Kingston, Ocho Rios and MontegoBay - saw scores of young professionals inattendance. The main purpose of theSessions was to promote the range of postgraduate degree programmes available atMSBM including the InternationallyAccredited MBA and several innovative MSc.Programmes to prospective students for theacademic year 2018/19.

CFA Challenge
A University of West Indies (UWI), Monateam was one of four teams which made it toRound Three of the Chartered FinancialAnalysts (CFA) Americas Regional ResearchChallenge competition (CFA StudentChallenge) which was held in Miami onFebruary 23, 2018. The team advancedthrough two previous rounds based on awritten report and then participated in thethird round which was based on both writtenreport and a presentation. The teamcomprised of Mona School of Business andManagement (MSBM) undergraduatestudents: Awah Muirhead, ShermarMillwood, Matthew Drummond, Ruan Francisand Samuel Dormeus with Dr Twila-MaeLogan, Deputy Executive Director, MSBM as
their coach. MSBM wishes to conveycongratulations to the team for their efforts inthis year’s Challenge.

MSBM Alumni Spotlight: Stephen Wright
For most, gaining excellence in one field or profession is a considerable accomplishment, but forwunderkind Stephen Wright that was simply not enough. After 15 years in the field of electronic andcomputer engineering, Wright has emerged as the top performer in the Post Graduate Programmes aswell as the top performer in the MBA programme at Mona School of Business and Management(MSBM), for the graduating class of 2017 earning an MBA in Banking and Finance with distinction.

He was speaking at JamaicaExporters Associations’ Family BusinessManagement Workshop on February 28,2018 which focused on extending legacies offamily businesses through generations.

Mona School of Business and Management(MSBM) hosted a “Bon Voyage” Receptionfor outgoing Director of Finance andAdministration, Mrs Patricia Lothian-Newball,at the Courtyard, MSBM North on March 12,2018. Mrs Lothian-Newball, one of thelongest serving employees, was integral toinstitutional development throughout thedifferent stages of organizational changefrom the Mona Institute of Business to theMona School of Business and, then MSBM,contributing knowledge and expertise inadministration and financial management.MSBM wishes her all the best in retirementand thanks her for her many years ofdedication, enthusiasm and team spirit.

MSBM International Women'sDay Forum & Luncheon
On March 8, 2018, Mona School of Businessand Management (MSBM) hosted anInternational Women's Day Forum andLuncheon for female staff and faculty whichfeatured guest speaker, Camille Facey,President, International Women's Forum(IWF), Jamaica. Facey’s presentation wascentred on the global theme “Press forProgress”. The event’s 60 attendees worepurple to observe the special day showingsolidarity in celebrating the achievements ofwomen while championing gender parity. Theannual initiative was spearheaded byMSBM’s Documentation and InformationCentre Supervisor, Althea Walker.

MSBM Sports Day 2018
Mona School of Business and Managementheld its second annual Staff Sports Day onJanuary 19, 2018 at the UWI Mona Bowl. Itwas a fun-filled day of competitive teamevents that helped to build team spirit andcamaraderie amongst staff. New eventsintroduced for this year’s staging included aFootball Competition and a DominoTournament. The Yellow House (YellowStars) copped first place with Blue Houseteam (Blue Blazers) in second place and RedHouse (Red Dragons) in third place. Theevent’s planning committee was chaired byProgramme Coordinator VanessaThompson.
