Mistakes and misconceptions

• “If it hits the fan, our external suppliers will rapidly deliver everything we need - we have put it

in the contract”

• “Resilience plans should focus just on IT and the building”

• “The Government will help us when it comes to big disasters”

• “Building a plan to be more resilient

is like climbing Mount Everest”

KISS #1: Internal ‘superhero’ team

Don’t outsource your resilience/continuity capability, but also don’t make one person the ‘single point of success’

.

KISS #2: All heads and hands together in a sticky note workshopScenario-based, process based, with departments all having their own colour

.

KISS #3: Document and practice your manual work-arounds

Your younger/new staff don’t know ‘the old way’

KISS #4: Cater for fatigue/unavailability of key staffFirst/second alternates. Develop and test your job rotation initiatives.

KISS #5: Dual supplier arrangements

Avoid ‘all eggs in one basket’. Where are you in your supplier’s priority listing? What are their resilience options? Do they have a Business Continuity Plan (BCP)?

KISS #6: Internal communication and awarenessUse free/cheap tools (WhatsApp, Yammer, xMatters). Push vs pull communication. Conduct staff induction on how to use them.

KISS #7: External communication (clients, suppliers, media, next-of-kin…)

Internal = external message. Look for the silver lining. Use templates. ‘Talk before they knock’.

KISS #8: Practice, practice, practice

Even a simple lunchtime walk-through based on a recent/current scenario from the news can do wonders for staff awareness and refreshing of key team members’ knowledge

KISS #9: Business Interruption Insurance Also key person insurance and cyber insurance; Not cheap – but it does take certain headaches away

KISS #10: Keep docs colourful & concise to prevent collecting ‘dust on the shelf’e.g. integrate any risks into your holistic resilience framework

.

e.g. a large scale illness, a factory fire,

a cyber attack or a telco outage are all just amongst the

many risks listed in your risk matrix/

register
