iPad Policy, Procedures, and Information

2013-2014

Clarke Middle School 1:1 iPad Program

To learn is to pursue understanding. To teach is to encourage and enable the pursuit of understanding.

-Anonymous

The changing landscape of the world’s information to digital form will require today’s student to have a

different set of skills than what was required just a decade ago. Future graduates must be equipped

with not just the three R’s, but also with 21st century skills of problem solving, critical thinking,

communication, and technological literacy. Students will need to be able to quickly find, synthesize andcommunicate information and collaborate with colleagues—not just in their own office, but within a

global community of colleagues and customers.

Clarke Middle School wants to ensure students develop the skills and knowledge necessary to

responsibly navigate this emerging modern world. Therefore, Clarke Middle School is launching a 1:1

(student to computing device) learning initiative using Apple iPads to create a seamless and dynamic

educational experience for students.

The goals of the 1:1 learning initiative will be to:

  Enhance and accelerate learning

  Leverage technology for individualizing instruction

  Promote collaboration, increasing student engagement

  Strengthen the 21st

century skills necessary for future success

A 1:1 learning initiative increases access to digital curriculum, in addition to traditional print textbooks

and classroom equipment such as graphing calculators. The opportunity to use 1:1 devices gives

students access to anywhere, anytime learning – in classrooms, in schoolyards, at cyber cafes, and at

home.

Access to the technology in the Clarke Community School District has been established for educational

purposes. The use of the Clarke Community School District’s electronic technologies is a valued resource

to our community. All electronic technologies must be used in support of the educational program of

the District. This access may be revoked at any time for illegal, unethical, abusive, or other inappropriate

conduct related to the use of electronic technologies.

Failure to comply with the District’s policies or rules related to the use of technology, including but not

limited to the Anti-Bullying/Harassment Policy (#104), Internet – Acceptable Use – Safety Policy

(#605.6), and the Student Electronic Devices Policy (see student handbook) or the guidelines stated in

this document for care and use of the iPad, may result in the loss of privilege to take the iPad home or

use the iPad in general or other disciplinary action.

The iPad is the property of Clarke Community School District and as a result may be collected and/or

reviewed, inspected, or monitored at any time, including via electronic remote access. The student shall

have NO expectation of privacy in the iPad or any materials located on or accessed through the iPad or

any District-owned technology.

District-owned iPads cannot be synced to any other computer. District-owned applications (Apps) will be

downloaded (synced) at school. In order to manage this process, common sync days will be set by the

District. Sync days REQUIRE all iPads connected to the District network for updates and maintenance. A

student’s f ailure to comply with this process may result in consequences as prescribed in this handbookand District Policy.

Your iPad comes with a school-issued case. The purpose of the case is to protect the iPad, especially

while the iPad is being transported. When not in use, closing the iPad case will save battery life and

protect the screen. The iPad MUST remain in the school-issued protective case at all times. Students

may not decorate or personalize iPad cases.

The iPad should be charged, using the provided wall charger, and brought to school ready to use each

day. Fully charged iPad batteries will typically last 12 – 15 hours of use. Waiting to charge the iPad until

the charge is low (less than 20% life or red indicator light) will extend the battery life. It is the student’s

responsibility to charge the iPad at home and ensure it is ready for use in school each day. Failure to do

so may result in the student’s inability to  participate in classroom learning activities.

The iPad is an electronic device; handle it with care:

Never throw a book bag that contains an iPad.

Never place an iPad in a book bag that contains food, liquids, heavy, or sharp objects.

Never place heavy objects on top of the iPad and never drop your iPad.

Careful placement of the iPad in your backpack is important.

While the iPad is scratch resistant, it is not scratch proof.

Avoid using any sharp object(s) on the iPad.

The iPad screen is glass and is vulnerable to cracking.

iPads do not respond well to liquids. Avoid getting moisture in the openings. Avoid applying

liquids to the iPad.

The iPad can be cleaned with a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not use window cleaners, household

cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, alcohol, ammonia, or abrasives to clean the iPad. Use of

unapproved cleaners may remove the protective film covering the face of the iPad.

Avoid placing weight on the iPad.

Never throw or slide an iPad.

Never expose an iPad to long-term temperature extremes or direct sunlight. An automobile is

not a good place to store an iPad.

The iPad comes equipped with a camera, audio and video recording capabilities through a built in

microphone and front and rear-facing cameras. All electronic recordings created with the device must

comply with District Policies and State and Federal Laws. District policy prohibits the use of electronic

recording devices in a manner that compromises the privacy interests of other individuals. District policy

also prohibits harassment and bullying (District Policy #104). Users of the iPad are required to use thedevice in a manner that complies with these and other District Policies. Use of the iPad in a manner that

violates District policy may result in revocation of the device and further disciplinary consequences.

Use of the iPad and any other devices with a camera, audio and video recording capabilities during

instructional time is at the discretion of the teacher and the student must obtain prior approval to use

the device for electronic recording purposes. Any electronic recordings obtained with the recording

device must be for instructional/educational purposes. Therefore, electronic recordings obtained with

the iPad may not be shared, published or rebroadcast for any reason by the student without prior

District permission. Furthermore, users of the iPad should be aware that State and Federal laws in many

instances prohibit secret or surreptitious recording undertaken without the knowledge and consent of

the person or persons being recorded. Violations of State and Federal recording laws may be reported tothe proper authorities and may result in criminal prosecution.

If the iPad or any accessories are lost or stolen, it must be reported to the building Principal as soon as

possible. It may be the responsibility of the student and family to pay the full cost of replacement of the

lost or stolen iPad and accessories. Examples of instances in which students and their families may be

charged include, but are not limited to, loss resulting from leaving the iPad unattended and unlocked.

Any theft of the iPad/accessories shall be reported to the police.

Do not attempt to gain access to the internal electronics or repair your iPad. If your iPad fails to work, or

if any accessories are damaged, report the problem to the building Principal as soon as possible. iPad

repair/replacement options will be determined by the building Principal. You may be issued a temporary

iPad or other materials until your iPad is working properly or replaced. If the iPad is experiencing

technical difficulties outside of school hours, you will need to wait until you return to school to fix it.

Most repairs will be completed during the summer months while the iPads are updated for the new

school year. Damage that renders the iPad unusable will be completed during the school year. It may bethe responsibility of the student and family to pay the full cost of repair or replacement for damage to

the iPad and accessories due to negligence. Negligence is defined as failure to exercise the care that a

reasonably responsible person would exercise in a like situation, as determined by District

administrative personnel. Examples of instances in which students and their families may be changed

include, but are not limited to, damage resulting from using the iPad in an unsafe manger or

intentionally causing damage to the iPad.

The costs of repair/replacement for damanges are reflected below:

● Damaged or broken screen may cost up to $200.

● Replacement cost for the provided iPad case is $50.

● Replacement cost for the provided iPad wall charger is $30.

● Replacement cost for the entire iPad is $400.

Any vandalism of the iPad/accessories shall be reported to the police.

Students who leave Clarke Community Schools during the school year must return the iPad, along with

any other accessories, at the time they leave. A non-returned iPad and all accessories will be considered

stolen and reported as such to the local law enforcement authorities. All other students shall return the

iPads and accessories at the time designated by the District. The iPad and all accessories should be

returned to the building Principal.

There is not an option to purchase insurance for the iPad through the District and the District DOES NOT

endorse any electronics insurance products. Parents who desire insurance to cover charges that they

may have to pay for damage or loss of the iPad/accessories, may wish to individually investigate options

through insurance providers, such as their own Homeowner’s insurance policy.

Never leave an iPad unattended. When not in your personal possession, the iPad should be in a secure,

locked environment. Unattended iPads will be collected and stored in the Principal’s office.

Do not lend your iPad to another person. Each iPad is assigned to an individual and the responsibility for

the care of the iPad solely rests with that individual.

Each iPad has a unique identification number and at no time should the numbers or labels be modified

or removed.

Employees and students will be instructed on the appropriate use of the Internet. Parents will be

required to sign a permission form to allow their students to access the Internet. Students will sign a

form acknowledging they have read and understand the Internet - Acceptable Use - Safety Policy and

Regulations; they will comply with the policy and regulations and understand the consequences for

violation of the policy or regulations.

10.1 Responsibility for Internet Appropriate Use

The authority for appropriate use of electronic Internet resources and other use of the District’s

technology resources is delegated to the licensed employees. However, students remain

responsible for their use of the District’s technology resources, including computers such asiPads and the Internet. For the purpose of this policy, Internet is defined as: A global computer

network providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting of

interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols.

Instruction in the proper use of the Internet will be available to employees who will then

provide similar instruction to their students.

10.2 Internet Access

Access to the Internet is available to teachers and students as a source of information, a tool for

learning and a vehicle of communication.

Students will be able to access the Internet in classrooms with teacher permission.

Individual student accounts and electronic mail addresses will be issued to students. Students

will be expected to use District-issued email accounts for all school-related work.

Making Internet access available to students carries with it the potential that some students

might encounter information that may not be appropriate. However, on a global network it is

impossible to control all content. Because information on the Internet appears, disappears and

changes, it is not possible to predict or control what students may access.

Our goal is to allow teachers and students access to the rich opportunities on the Internet. We

protect the rights of students and parents who choose not to risk exposure to questionable

material.

The smooth operation of the network relies upon the proper conduct of the end users who must

adhere to strict guidelines, which require efficient, ethical and legal utilization of network

resources.

To reduce unnecessary system traffic, users may use real-time conference features such as

talk/chat/Internet relay chat only as approved by the supervising teacher.

Creation or transmission of material, information or software in violation of law, board policy or

regulation is prohibited.

The District makes no guarantees as to the accuracy of educational content accessed through

the internet.

10.3 Permission to Use Internet

Annually, parents will grant permission for their student to use the Internet during registration process.

10.4 Student Use of District Technology Resources and the Internet

Equal Opportunity: The Internet is available to all students within the District.

  Online Etiquette

The use of the network is a privilege and may be taken away for violation of law or

board policy or regulations. As a user of the Internet, students may be allowed access to

other networks. Each network may have its own set of policies and procedures. It is the

user's responsibility to abide by the policies and procedures of these other networks.

Students shall:

Adhere to online protocol. Students shall not reveal any personally identifying

information about themselves or others unless authorized to do so.

Respect all copyright and license agreements.

Cite all quotes, references, and sources.
