Begin the day beforeFamiliarize yourself with the directions/procedures.

If anything is unclear, ask questions!

Follow instructions exactly. Never try anything on your own without asking Ms. Galan first.

Keep work area clean and organized. Don’t rush! Take your time!

Clean-up your work area. Turn off and unplug any equipment that’s not being used.

Throw away waste in it’s proper receptacle.◦Sharp objects do NOT go into the regular

trash can! Wash your hands thoroughly!

Wear safety goggles when handling chemicals, burners, or any substance that may get in your eyes.

Wear an apron whenever you work with heat or chemicals.

Tie back long hair to keep away from flames.

Remove any clothing or jewelry that can hang down into chemicals, flames, and moving parts.

Never use heat source such as a candle or burner without safety glasses.

Never heat a chemical you are not instructed to heat.

Maintain a clean work area and keep items away from flame.

Never reach across a flame or hot surface.

Make sure you know how to operate a hot plate.

Never leave machines unattended.

When heating test tubes or bottles, never point towards yourself or others.

Never heat a closed container. ◦ Hot air, vapors, or gases

may cause it to explode.

Never pick up a container that has been heated without testing it. ◦ Hold the back of your hand

near the container. If you can feel the heat, don’t touch it!

Use clamps, tongs, or heat-resistant gloves to handle hot materials.

Never mix chemicals, without permission from Ms. Galan. ◦You may produce a

dangerous substance or explosion.

Never touch, taste, or smell a chemical that you are unsure if it’s harmless or not.

Never smell chemicals directly. Wave hand over opening of container to waft fumes toward nose.

Keep all containers closed when not in use.

Dispose of chemicals properly.

Be careful when working with acids and bases. Pour such chemicals from one container to another over the sink.

When diluting an acid, pour the ACID into WATER. NEVER pour WATER into an ACID.◦ The acid may splash on you!

If acids or bases get on skin or clothes, rinse with water immediately. Notify Ms. Galan of any spills!

Never heat glassware that isn’t dry.

Always check glassware to see if its hot before picking it up.

Never use broken or chipped glassware. ◦ If you notice or accidently

break glassware, notify Ms. Galan and deposit in proper container.

Never eat or drink from lab glassware.

Clean glassware before putting it away.

No experiments that cause pain, discomfort, or harm to animals should be done in the classroom or at home.

Follow instructions completely. Special handling is required when animal is scared, pregnant, feeding, or with its young.
