E: TEACHING AND RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

Ph.D. project was conducted under the supervision of Professor Lord

Lewis at the University of Cambridge. This project was based on the

synthesis and some chemical aspects of aurated high nuclearity osmium

carbonyl clusters. It involved the study of the effect of gold bonded

phosphines on the metal framework and revealing the reactivity of some

high nuclearity osmium carbonyl clusters towards monodentate and

bidenate phosphine gold fragments including some chemical reactivity of

resultant gold bimetallic clusters. Some novel structures of osmium gold

bi-metallic clusters were found. The techniques used for this study

includes IR,mass,NMR and x-ray crystallography.

PSF project (Pakistan Science Foundation) during 1991-1992 under

the supervision of Dr. Saqi Ali and Dr. M.Mazhar at the Department

of Chemistry, Quaid-I-Azam University Islamabad, involving

organometallic chemistry of tin.

M.Phil thesis is based on the rock and mineral analysis using

conventional (gravimetric) as well as instrumental techniques (e.g.

IR,x-ray fluorescence and AAS).

M.Sc. Report includes the characterization of coordination complexes

with some oxygen and nitrogen containing ligand using infrared

spectroscopy.

Laboratory demonstrations of undergraduate classes (part I and

part II) at the University Chemical Laboratory, Cambridge, U.K.

during Ph.D. program.

Laboratory supervision of M.Sc. students(inorg/analytical) at the

Department of Chemistry, Quaid-I-Azam University Islamabad, during

M.Phil. Program.

Presently I am working as "Associate Professor" at Quiad-I-Azam

University Islamabad, and engaged in teaching and research at M.Sc,

M.Phil and Ph.D level.

I: WORKSHOPS/CONFERENCES

1994 Two Workshops on Cluster Reaction and Catalysis, organized by

ESF (European Science Foundation), were attended. The first one was

held at University Rovira i Vigili, Spain. The lectures were given

by many renowned scientists. The topics of lectures were mechanisms

of cluster reactivity-surface/cluster analogy, elementary steps of

C-C bond formation and C-C bond cleavage on small metal particles,

and introducing localized metal-metal bond polarity into large

cluster frameworks-Osmium-Mercury clusters, their systematic

build-up and structural modification.

1994 The second workshop was held at the Isle of Thorns Training

Center, Chelwood Gate, Sussex, England. It was organized by Prefessor

D.M.P.Mingos and theoretical aspects of cluster chemistry was

discussed. The lectures were given on cluster with interstitial

atoms, cluster with -donar ligands, graphical representations of

molecular orbital calculations and skeletal and related

rearrangements in clusters.

1995 A symposium, Metal-Metal bomds in chemistry, organized by the

Royal Society of Chemistry Dalton Division, has also been attended.

It was held in the honour of Lord Lewis of Newnham at the University

of Cambridge. Many famous chemists like F.A.Cotton, R.A.Walton,

H.Werner, M.H.Chisholm, B.F.G.Johnson gave lectures.
