Classroom Updates Thank you for coming in for parent conferences. I enjoyed meeting each of you and sharing about your child’s progress this year. I hope that everyone is enjoying the holiday season and that you are able to spend some quality time building memories with your kiddos! We are also all looking forward to our Carol Sing on December 20 th ! Reading and Writing The students have been working hard on their reading skills. Skills that we have been working on recently include identifying main ideas and details and using text features. In December we will be studying fables and focusing on elements of fiction. Please continue to read with your child each night and reinforce these skills with your child as he/she reads. This month we will continue working on paragraph writing. Math The third grade students are in the midst of a second Multiplication and Division unit. We are reviewing arrays, equal groups and repeated addition as strategies to solve multiplication facts involving numbers 6 to 10.

Our next unit in math will be on Data and Graphing. We will be learning about tally charts, bar graphs, pictographs, and line plots. The students will learn to read graphs and make their own graphs. We will test this unit by Christmas, but we will continue to use the strategies for the rest of the school year.

Science and Social Studies

The students recently studied landforms and natural disasters through reading, writing and some library research. They learned about causes of natural disasters and why certain areas of the world are more susceptible to specific types of natural disasters. They also learned about how lucky they are to live in E-town because their community rarely has to worry about major natural disasters!

During the month of December, we will have five sessions of our Junior Achievement program. The students will be learning about earning, saving and spending money.

Reminder: • Please remember to send your

child to school with a warm coat, hat and gloves for recess. Students go outside twice a day. Some days it is quite cold!
