Opera VS Musical
● An opera is a dramatic story in which the characters sing, rather than speak their
conversations. It is a complex musical art form because it combines acting, singing,
orchestral music, costumes, scenery and often ballet or some other form of dance.
● A musical blends a story, musical scores, singing, dancing and speaking.
● The music shows the emotion being expressed by a character in a given moment.
● Porgy and Bess is different than most operas because:
○ Most operas are in the Italian or German language. Porgy and Bess is in English.
○ Most operas are very classical. Porgy and Bess, on the other hand is defined by
the writer, George Gershwin as a folk opera. Porgy and Bess is based on a folk
tale and the songs in it are folk songs. The music is a blend of opera, jazz, blues,
spirituals, ragtime and folk music.
○ Porgy and Bess has spoken parts and sung parts. Most operas have only music -
very little if any speaking.***

the opera Porgy and Bess:

Texture Collage
1. Find a variety of objects to create a texture collage. Texture is something that feels
bumpy and can be found everywhere! Some examples are: leaves, bark, sidewalk, flowers,
screens (some toys have great textures too!)
2. Place your paper on top of the object and rub over top of it with a crayon. Try using a
different color for each texture and fit each texture on the same piece of paper.
3. OPTIONAL: once the paper is filled with different textures, use watercolor paint to
finish the project. The paint should resist the crayon and only fill in the white spaces of
the paper.
