Introduction

This is the Study Report of LP Thailand Teacher Exchanged during 3 weeks

(20120506 – 20120528). All over it is a very good program for us with many

interesting topics, discussions and visits to different hospitals and institutions. In this

way, we have detailed summarized of The Red Cross University College and our

activities follows as:

1 Information’s

1.1 The Red Cross University College(RCUC)

1.1.1 Background The Red Cross University College or The Roda Korsets Hogskola(RKH)offers

training leading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing as well as single subject courses

for nurses. RKH also provides courses for specialist nurses, awards a Master of

Science in Nursing, and carries out commissioned courses within medical care .

The first nursing education was started in 1867 by Emmy Rappe, who was trained by

Florence Nightingale at St Thomas Hospital in London. The University College has

been educating and training Red Cross nurses in Sweden for more than 140 years.

Since 1925, the Red Cross University College has been owned by a foundation,

Stiftelsen Rödakorshemmet, and run as a non-profit University College, financed by

the State. The seven Red Cross Principles: humanity, impartiality, neutrality,

independence, voluntary service, unity and universality, are the core of our activities.

There are a little more than 50 persons who work at The Red Cross University

College. The majority of the research carried out at the Red Cross University College

is in the field of nursing care. We also collaborate with other higher education

institutes in Stockholm, such as the Karolinska Institute and the Royal Institute of

Technology.

3

The RKH have an intake of students twice a year, in August and January, with

approximately 80 students each term entering the three-year full-time nursing study

programme. The programme leads to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and graduates

can then apply to the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare for

authorization as a Registered Nurse. The University College also offers specialist

nursing programmes in operating-room care and intensive care, both of which lead to

a Master of Science after one year. 1.1.2 Map and environment at RKH

Reflexion in Lecture and Discussion Role 1) To know about self regulation in Sweden’s nurse student in learning,

behavior for learning. They interested because they choose to learn, not

someone force them to learn.

2) Student get independent to learn, not to check for attending the Class,

They learn when they we need to learn. Get more benefit, love to learn and

may interested for get knowledge and apply to use in practice.

3) Learning style by adult learner. On time, politely and dare to ask not

shy. The students have high responsibility in learning

3. Supervise the 3rd year students

3.1 Two students in writing a Bachelor essay in a seminar.

Title: Ready for the professional? A study about newly

Registered nurse knowledge .Students: Maria Löfgren and

Charlotta Johansson

12

Reflexion

1) To know the background, objective, method and material of

This study

2) To share and discussion how to report results and write a good Discussion with student and lecturer.

3) To know learning style of students, they were eager to study,

Try hard and manage themselves for this study, they have responsibility for work and report in time appointment. The students discussed,

received a good counseling and guide to study from teacher ,the

atmosphere is friendly. 4) The study is very useful for apply how to prepare newly

Registered nurses’ to be professional nurses.

3.2 Two students in writing a Bachelor essay in a seminar.

Title: Mental Health care experiences listening to families.

Students: John Hålsten and Malin Lindström.

13

Reflexion 1) To know the background, objective, method and material of This study and s student can apply research study; the theory to practice.

2). Good learning style of students, they were eager to study, tries

Hard and manage themselves for this study, they have responsibility for work and report in time appointment. The students discussed, received a

good counseling and guide to study from teacher closely.

3) To share and discussion how to report results and write discussion, the atmosphere is friendly

4. Meeting and discussion

4.1 Meeting with students at The RCUC, they work with the Red

Cross International profile. Discussions about the Code of Conduct.

Students’ perspective. Students: Anna Helmersson, student at the 2nd year and Lucy Howard, student at the 3rd year

Reflexion

1) Discussions about the Code of Conduct. Students’ perspective,

culture and health from a gender perspective cultural aspects of health, ill health and nursing ,Student know some part of Code of Conduct.

2) The result of discussion to show a gender, culture , cultural

aspects of health, ill health and nursing perspective in Thailand and Sweden some of them difference. It depends on culture, example In

Sweden about gender, both male and female are equally. In Thailand may

be the poor status male may be higher potential than female, but in good status are equally. Student’s suggestion in Sweden ha s morbidity rate in

female are more than male, then discussion. Factor related to: e.g. health

14

behavior (Smoking, drink alcohol, nutrition), ethic, kind of work and

influence of work. 3) To show student ability for discussion base on data which they

review, Both Instructor and student share experience. The student should

be awareness of this code when practice.

4.2 International breakfast at RCUC. Discussions about the public

health care systems and education systems in Thailand today.

(Mrs. Sompit Yaisoon, the leader of the discussion)

Reflexion

1) It may be a short period for some students which interested this

topic to discussion because it time nearly they start to learn in classroom.

So I think, we can set some group who interested this topic or joint this topic in some subject which similar context ,may be more benefit for

students

2) The students are good participation for discussion and sharing Sweden context too. The first students interested in education system more

than public health care systems because they maybe just begin study nurse.

3) It is good experience for me to discussions about the public health care systems and education systems in Thailand today with

international student class.

4.3 Receive more information about "The Public Health Situation

in Sweden” From Mrs. Grabrilla

Reflexion

1) It is important and useful receive information about "The

Public Health Situation and education system in Sweden”.

2) It is good system which government supported in education and p public health care.

15

5. Seminar

5.1 Lunch seminar with students and colleagues from The RCUC

“The Public Health situation in Thailand today". (Mrs. Sompit

Yaisoon, the leader of the seminar)

Reflexion

1) It is useful seminar which colleagues from The RCUC and TRCN (The Thai Red Cross College of Nursing) discuss and share

information (public health situation) together, although they are very busy.

To share idea about problem in health behavior and health care, both the same and difference aspect.

2) Getting some view aspect to develop public health care in

Thailand, although start in small group. 5.2 Seminar in Gynecology, obstetrics with 2nd year 5 students 1

Swedish teacher

16

Reflexion

1) To observe and discussion in Seminar about Gynecology & Obstetrics. All students to present their case, every case is interesting, the

problem each case about

- Miscarriage (abortion) - Cesarean section with Breast feeding problem and

communication problem(Chinese 1 case and Pakistian 1 case)

-Urine incontinence -Heavy bleeding and Hysterectomy

2) Students study their cases and good participation in seminar .In

RCUC have Nursing Care Plan from is short and focus in important point which stimulate students to think , search data, disease and analyze data

about case. In the beginning, the teacher told agreement in seminar, she

did not interrupted but listen and respect each other not blame students, If some point did not clear, student should to find out more.

Students are encouraged to learn.

3) It is very useful for visiting, but it take time for round trip and lunch. It will be better to set schedule more than 1 hour for start class in

the afternoon.

6. Planning and Discussion

6.1 Planning for the collaboration the next academic year.

17

Reflexion

1) To share and discussion about planning for the collaboration the next academic year, the suitable time for exchange teachers/

students program from Thai and Sweden . In RCUC, Sweden, academic

year composed of two semesters each semester has 20 weeks. The first; fall semester, it start about mid August to January. The second; spring

semester, it starts about first of June. Students will learn 6 semesters or

three years bachelor in Nursing. Students had 2.5 months summer break, they can do everything depend on themselves in vacation).

2) The good time for student exchange period is5 the semester but

the teachers must depend on their duty, what subject they teach. The Thai Red Cross College of Nursing academic year composed of three semesters

each semester has 16 weeks. The first semester, it start about the

beginning of June to the end of September or the beginning of The second semester, it start about the mid of October to the mid of

February . The summer or third semester, it starts about the end of March

to beginning of May. 3) The good time for student or exchange period may be at the end

of summer. Academic situation in Thailand and Sweden are difference,

have many factor which related for exchange plan should be concern e.g. academic year plan, academic administration system. This section only

gives some information for planning for the collaboration the next

academic year, but International Coordinator of RCUC will cooperate with Assistant Director for International Relations of The Thai Red Cross

College for possibility plan.

6.2 Research meeting, RKH and TRCN, Planning and presentation

of research collaboration

Reflexion

1) It is good opportunity to share and collaborate in research, it

has 2 research presentation as follows:

1.1) Attitude about Unwanted Pregnancy among Student Nurses: Case Study in the Red Cross of Nursing in Sweden and Thailand. (By

Mrs.Sompit Yaisoon)

1.2) The Effect of Complementary Care by Therapeutic Touch on Hypertension in Elderly, Co-operated Research of teacher Exchange

for Linnaeus-Palme program ,Sweden Participant between The Thai Red

Cross College of Nursing and The Sweden Red Cross College of Nursing.(By Miss Wannarudee Phuthong)

After presentation, Helena Volgsten interested in Sompit s

project and sharing the experience in research, we will co-operate to work

18

this project. When Sompit arrive to my college, she must start to run this

research. First, she will to apply her proposal to ethic committee of TRCN and funding research. After that they can do this research and contact

about research by e-mail.

In the same time, Margret Nisell was interested in Wannarudee research but she didn´t know about Therapeutic touch. She

assumed that it is a some kind of massage. We discussed about problem in

process of this researching as follows: *Teacher Problem as they told me that there is only one

teacher in RCUC with experience in Therapeutic touch. She don´t work

any longer at RCUC and they couldn´t give me her name or email. *Student problem because RCUC cannot use the extra period

of them for a TT training program.

*Population problem because nurse instructors at RCUC and others cannot do research with patients in the hospital.

*The most important in my opinion is that we should had

started discuss the research in the 1st week. My plan in the concept paper I sent to you before my arrival must start directly in the first week so I could

be possible to manage and co-operative research

Finally, when we came back to Thailand, we got mail from Mia Kraft and she told that“I had a meeting with Mai Leander today and

she also told me that you (Wannarudee) want to teach your method and try

it with the elderly people here in Sweden. I think it is a good idea and I will contact Eva von Staruss, she is a big fan of your college and maybe

we can start a co-operation about your method. Eva is the Director at the

Red Cross Elderly Care and we went to Bangkok together for the first time.

7. Share experiences with Swedish colleague (informal)

7.1 Lunch with Mia Kraft/Mai Leander

19

Reflexion

1) To receive warm welcome from RCUC and share experience in

teaching and my first time in Sweden.

2) Mia Kraft give orientation the schedule and explain about how

to do the job and live in the University and how to travel in Stockholm (Subway, bus,

train and boat) by the ticket.

7.2 Dinner with teachers from the RCUC Tjabba Thai, Wallingatan 7,219988

Reflexion

1) An excellent dinner in Thai atmosphere with nice people.

2) It was a very good dinner with good Thai taste food.

3) Enjoyable to share each culture, food and language.

4) Thanks a lot to Mia Kraft and her colleagues for entertaining us.

7.3 Lunch with Jenny Cadstedt, Per Ekstrand and teachers from the RCUC.

The bachelor programme of Nursing is a three year long full time study programme

(180credits). After these years the students get:

•Bachelor of Science in Nursing License to practice as R.N. by the National Board

of Health and Welfare

•Subjects within the bachelor programme in nursing (in total 180 credits)

20

Reflexion

1) To share education system between The Thai Red Cross

College of Nursing and the otter Institute in Thailand and in Sweden

2)To share the possibility to co-operate the international programme

for bachelor programme. The suggestion about exchange program which the

Student must study 1year at Sweden or Thailand. (This may be the last

year’s student of bachelor degree.) The student who learn this programme

should receive bachelor degree both Sweden and Thailand.

7.4 Lunch with Mai Leander at the last day

Reflexion

1) It is the third weeks ,the last week for LP Thailand exchange

Program. we share all of experience which we received from Sweden, and some

Information to set the next plan.

2) It was a very warm welcome and so she was a represent of

RCUC to give the ceremony gift for us.
