In July 2009, Terry Herbert, a metal detector enthusiast decided to try his luck in farmland close to his home in Hammerwich parish, near Lichfield in Staffordshire.

The Staffordshire Hoard is the largest collection of Anglo-Saxon gold and silver metalwork ever found, anywhere in the world!

This web quest will examine life during the Anglo-Saxon times (449-1066)in order to give you a better understanding of the culture and history before reading the literature.

By the end of your journey, you should have a better understanding of the culture of the Anglo-Saxons, who lived more than 1000 years ago.

As we study works of literature like the Anglo-Saxon riddles, The Seafarer, and Beowulf, be sure to identify the cultural and historical values you have learned in this activity.

Conclusion
