Mathematics CurriculumMathematics Curriculum

Sixth-grade students develop an understanding of the concept of a ratio and use ratio reasoning to solve a variety of real-world and mathematical problems, including those involving unit pricing and constant speed.

Students extend their understanding of operations with fractions to include dividing fractions by fractions. Sixth-graders compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and their understanding decimals and find the greatest common factor and least common multiples of certain whole numbers

Students expand their scope of numbers to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative rational numbers and integers. They locate rational numbers on a number line, add and subtract negative numbers, and graph points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane.

Page 6: Mrs. Nieland Sixth Grade nielandm@ivyacademia.com Ivy Academia Charter School Back to School Night

Students write expressions and equations with variables and apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions.

Students begin to think statistically as they summarize numerical data sets by quantitative measures of center and variability. They build upon the foundation of area to determine area and volume of more complex shapes.

Language Arts Curriculum Language Arts Curriculum Reading:

Students in sixth grade read and analyze a wide range of literature and informational text, selected from different periods and cultures, including stories, drama, and poetry. Students will analyze the structures and elements of literary works in order to comprehend the texts. Students will compare and contrast reading a piece of literature with listening to or watching an audio, video, or live version of the text.

In addition, students compare and contrast texts in different forms or genres in relationship to different approaches to similar themes or topics. Students will be asked to identify a central idea or theme, using supporting evidence and details. Students will further analyze how a certain sentence, chapter, scene, or stanza contributes to the development of the theme, setting, or plot. Students must also provide a summary of the text without including their personal opinions.

Language Arts continuedLanguage Arts continuedWriting/Speaking/Listening:

Students in sixth grade demonstrate sophisticated writing skills from their use of specific vocabulary and syntax to a more cohesive organization of ideas that incorporate a range of content and a variety of sources. Their writing demonstrates a command of the conventions of the English language, familiarity with organizational features, and a clear style of writing appropriate for an identified purpose and audience, and experience with the stages of the writing process (e.g., prewriting, drafting, revising, editing). Students use technology to compose and publish documents and to find resources and gather info information to support their main idea. Sixth grade students will be writing narratives, informational, and persuasive essays throughout the year.

Sixth grade includes an emphasis on collaborative discussions on sixth-grade topics and texts with diverse partners and in different groupings (one-on-one, in groups, or teacher-led). In these discussions, students come prepared to add to the discussion by referencing evidence reflecting ideas being discussed. Students follow rules for discussions with specific goals, deadlines, and individual roles. They make comments that contribute to the discussion and elaborate on the remarks of others, pose or respond to questions, and demonstrate understanding of a variety of viewpoints through reflection and paraphrasing.

Science CurriculumScience CurriculumThe science curriculum in sixth grade emphasizes the

study of earth sciences. The standards in sixth grade present many of the foundations of geology and geophysics, including plate tectonics and earth structure, topography, and energy. The material is linked to resource management and ecology, building on what students have learned in previous grades.

Sixth-grade science topics are organized into six standard sets: Plate Tectonics and Earth’s Structure, Shaping Earth’s Surface, Heat (Thermal Energy) (Physical Sciences), Energy in the Earth System, Ecology (Life Sciences), Resources, and Investigation and Experimentation. As students learn the content defined by the standards in the Life, Earth, and Physical Science strands, they are also practicing investigation and experimentation skills.

Social Studies Curriculum Social Studies Curriculum

Students in sixth-grade learn about the lives of the

earliest humans, the development of tools, the gathering way of life, agriculture, and the emergence of civilizations in Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indus River valley, China, and the Mediterranean basin.

Students review the geography of the ancient and contemporary worlds and recognize that these civilizations were not static societies but continually experienced change. In addition to developing basic geography skills, students are introduced to patterns, systems, and processes of physical and human geography.

Homework PolicyHomework Policy Students will be expected to do daily homework in

Math and Language Arts. I will assign homework nightly. It is the responsibility

of each student to write down that night’s homework. I will also post homework on my website. Homework will count towards your students participation grade.

By doing homework daily, students are given a chance to review and practice the skills that we are working on in class, and they are learning how to become organized individuals.

Homework is an essential part of my instructional program. It is an extension of the learning experience that children have during the school day.

Homework is online using the programs IXL and

Achieve 3000 and My Math daily Independent Practice

Computer Lab Times:

7:45 – 8:20 am and 2:45 – 3:30 pm daily

Classroom Classroom ExpectationsExpectations

Discipline is necessary for a child’s emotional well-being and security. The classroom rules are enforced in our room, and I consistently use positive reinforcement to encourage and reward appropriate behavior. Positive reinforcement includes individual rewards from the Nieland Store, verbal praise, special helper, etc.) and whole class rewards, such as popcorn parties, free time, and extra credit points.

Classroom jobs are an essential component on our classroom. Students must apply for the job they want and if they are a successful worker they receive a weekly salary in the form of Nieland bucks which they can use to purchase things from the Nieland Store (stickers, pencils, erasers, homework passes, etc.)

This year Ivy Academia has adopted the Capturing Kids Hearts philosophy. Each class has created a Social Contract and we all hold each other accountable.

If your child continually has to be reminded to demonstrate appropriate behavior, you will be notified and they will be disciplined appropriately (i.e warning, reflection, teacher conference, parent/teacher conference).

Every student gets a fresh start at the beginning of each day.

What can parents do to What can parents do to help?help?

Here are some tips that parents can do to help their child be successful in school:

Provide a good breakfast for your child. Students need “brain food” for all they have to learn this year.

Start the school day off right by getting your child to school on time. Students must be in the classroom by 8:30 am (and it is a bit of a walk!)

Pack a healthy snack and lunch for your child everyday. They will need to replenish their energy throughout the day. Please make sure your child has water to drink during the day.

Enforce a reasonable bedtime for your child. Students in sixth grade need about 10 hours of sleep each night.

Limit TV. watching, video/computer game playing (“screen time”) to 1 hour maximum per day.

Encourage your child to start all reports and projects on the day they are assigned.

Encourage routines for homework!

Page 20: Mrs. Nieland Sixth Grade nielandm@ivyacademia.com Ivy Academia Charter School Back to School Night

Parent Tips continuedParent Tips continued Do not over-do extra curricular activities during the

school week. Your child may feel overwhelmed and have trouble completing homework assignments.

Enforce the Ivy dress code by providing your child with the correct clean uniform each day of the week. Tuesdays and Thursdays are our regular P.E. days and students may wear their P.E. clothes to school. Fridays are always formal dress days.

Communicate with your child’s teacher! If you have any questions, please email me at [email protected] I will respond within 48 hours.

Stay updated with homework, projects, and important events. Visit our classroom website weekly at www.ivyacademia.com. Follow the link to Mrs. Nieland’s 6th Grade Website.
