ELA Common Core Curriculum/ReadingThree Major Changes

• More factual/nonfiction texts to build background knowledge in all areas.

• More challenging or difficult texts and more questions requiring locating details or making inferences within the texts. All answers must be must be clearly explained and be supported with information from the text.

• Students will increase their vocabulary through varied sources of information .

Language Arts

1. Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

2. Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.

3. Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening.

4. Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 4 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies.

5. Demonstrates understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.

6. Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-specific words and phrases, including those that signal precise actions, emotions, or states of being (e.g., quizzed, whined, stammered) and that are basic to a particular topic (e.g., wildlife and endangered when discussing animal preservation).

Writing1. Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with

reasons and information.

2. Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.

3. Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.

4. Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

5. With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, and editing

6. With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with other; demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of one page in a single sitting.

The students are to take home their student planners (assignment books) every night. The homework will also be posted on the class web site.

Every student will be assigned a class number. All papers that are handed in should have this number in the upper right hand corner.

All work must be neat and legible and have the student’s name on it.

Students are responsible for making up any missed work during an absence within a reasonable time frame.

Demerits will be given for missed homework and assignments.

Missing work will also affect the subject grade.

All written work should be done in script or cursive writing.

Please make sure your child has pens and/or sharpened pencils.

Please make sure your child's name is on all of their belongings.

Children should come to school prepared with work and supplies.

If your child usually rides the bus, please send in a note if there is any change.

Please read the school calendar for the uniform requirements and other school rules.

Demerits will be given in 4th Grade. If your child accumulates 3 demerits they will have detention.

If you need to meet with me, please send in a note, or email me so that we can set up a time that is convenient for both of us.

If your child is absent, please remember to send in an absence note when your child returns to school.

There will be at least 2 tests and at least 5 quizzes in each subject during a semester.

The tests will account for about a third of the semester grade.

I will give advanced notice for all tests. I do not always give notice for quizzes.

All tests and quizzes should be written in pen.

All grades will be posted as soon as possible on the Power School web site. Please check the site frequently. Interim reports will not be sent home.
