2020 SEASON August 2020 GREETINGS and WELCOME to the 2020 JMU MARCHING ROYAL DUKES! I would like to welcome all of you to “Virginia’s Finest,” and one of America’s favorite college band programs! For those of you returning, welcome back. And, for those who will be joining us for the first time, we welcome you to one of the most outstanding traditions on our campus, the JMU Marching Royal Dukes!

As we begin our 48th season, we are excited to return to campus for what will certainly be a unique semester. As we adjust to the ever-changing circumstances of our current world, we can count on one thing – we are planning for the Marching Royal Dukes to be back at JMU! During the ongoing process of planning and making arrangements for our pre-season camp, we ask that you join us in acknowledging the need for patience and understanding. Our priority is to create a safe and productive process that accommodates the policies and protocol in place by JMU as well as state and federal agencies in order to create the product we are proud of. And while that product may very well look and sound different than “usual,” we look forward to working TOGETHER to create it, support the JMU community, and celebrate our MRD traditions.

We are excited to announce that our first show of the year, entitled “The World Turned Upside Down!,” will feature music and a unique message for these unique times. We will open with “The Battle of Yorktown” (a.k.a. The World Turned Upside Down) from the musical Hamilton. This will be followed by a powerful rendition of “Stand Up” from the movie Harriet. Our show will close with a masterful arrangement of Andra Day’s “Rise Up” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” While we hope to perform this at Bridgeforth Stadium in the fall, we plan to work on the music and create a production for our audience (whether in person or virtual) regardless of the status of JMU football.

M A R C H I N GR OYA L D U K E S

Welcome!

COVID-19 INFORMATION Throughout this document (and the MRD website), please pay close attention to the COVID-19 INFORMATION statements. These will provide basic details about COVID-19 mitigation measures being taken by the MRDs this season.

COVID-19 STATEMENT The MRD staff are continuing our work with the JMU Administration, Athletics, Health Center, Dining Services, Residence Life, and multiple other campus entities involved in making the necessary plans for returning to campus this fall. As a result, all plans for the upcoming MRD season are and will remain fluid and will need to be adjusted as University, State, and Federal mandates are updated.

As we have updated/final information or if our plans change for camp and/or the season, please make sure to stay current with your JMU @dukes e-mail for these important updates.

If you have questions about the JMU COVID-19 policies/procedures and to become more informed and aware of JMU’s plan to reopen in the fall, please visit:

MRD PRE-SEASON INFORMATION 2020

Please review carefully – UPDATED 8.4.20 All information is also available on the MRD website: www.jmu.edu/mrd

MRD MEMBER SEASON PREPARATION & COVID-19 REQUIREMENTS All members of the JMU Marching Royal Dukes are expected to be informed and prepared for the upcoming season. Understanding the special circumstances, policies, and requirements is essential for being effectively prepared for a responsible start of the semester: JMU POLICY (7.7.20) https://www.jmu.edu/stop-the-spread/reopening/repopulation/return-to-campus.shtml

COVID-19 SCREENING According to JMU policy (below), all MRD members are required to download and use the LiveSafe Mobile App prior to arriving.

From the JMU Plan for returning to campus: Prior to returning to campus, students are expected to complete health screening questions on the LiveSafe Mobile App. This software application pushes a screening survey to users when they enter campus through geo-fencing or through a computer logon. The user responds to questions related to body temperature, COVID-19 symptoms and any instructions they have received to self-isolate by another agency or medical professional. Based on their responses, students are either permitted to proceed to campus or are provided with instructions for follow-up that allow them to obtain assistance and maintain their health and the well-being of the community. JMU is in the process of establishing systems to follow-up with students who do not complete the screening and to connect with students who identify as having symptoms. Student training includes information about this screening and how to seek out support if they have symptoms of COVID-19.

INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITIES: • Review and understand university policies outlined on the COVID-19 website:

https://www.jmu.edu/stop-the-spread/index.shtml • Be aware of updates, changes in policy, and other news from JMU • Review and understand the policies and procedures outlined in the MRD Season Covid Protocol Doc. • Understand the COVID-19 symptoms: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/symptoms-

MRD INSTRUMENT DISTRIBUTION If you play one of the following instruments: Mellophone, Trombone, Baritone, or Tuba, YOU WILL NEED TO SIGN OUT YOUR MRD INSTRUMENT AT OUR INSTRUMENT DISTRIBUTION DURING SEASON CHECK-IN (August 21-24, 6-9pm). Dinkles – “Vanguard” or “Glide” designs – www.dinkles.com

Please note that the above shoes are just recommendations. You should consider purchasing your shoes from the most convenient location and for the best price.

IF YOU ALREADY OWN A PAIR OF BLACK MARCHING SHOES . . .

THESE MUST BE SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR MARCHING. BLACK ATHLETIC SHOES ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE. If you have any questions about your shoes, please feel free to

bring them to registration to get a staff member’s approval.

REQUIRED ITEMS FOR WIND PLAYERS The items below are required for certain sections in the band. Please review this information carefully and make sure to place your order(s) in time to have these items with you for the start of the MRD season on Wednesday, August 26.

Trumpets, Mellophones, Trombones, & Baritones

BERP: Each member of the MRD brass section should own their own Berp to be used during rehearsals for buzzing. They attach universally to any lead pipe. These can be found online and at most music stores.

Note: If you already own a Trumpet/Horn “Classic” Berp (metal, fits in lead pipe), this will work. However, the plastic Berp is recommended as it is less likely to get lost and provides a more natural placement of the mouthpiece on the horn.

Page 10: MRD CAMP - INFORMATION PACKET 2020 UPDATED Camp 2020/MRD-CAMP... · case in case yours gets lost or damaged) • Hand sanitizer (pack extra in your instrument case, backpack, vehicle,

MOUTHPIECES

All brass players must provide their own mouthpiece(s). For those using university instruments (Mellophone, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba) please see below:

Mellophone: Please purchase a Mellophone mouthpiece – Yamaha MP14F4. Trumpet mouthpieces or Horn mouthpieces with an adaptor are not acceptable.

Trombone/Baritone: Large Bore mouthpiece – Bach 6 ½ AL or Bach 5G are recommended

Tuba: Any tuba mouthpiece will work. The Conn Helleberg is recommended – a good, quality mouthpiece that is affordable.

OTHER ACCESSORIES

VALVE OIL/SLIDE GREASE: Please make sure to have the necessary valve oil and/or slide grease with you. Consider having enough for the entire season. And Step #2 . . . use it!!

TOWELS: Mellophones, Baritones, and Tubas are REQUIRED to provide a towel to use when placing your school instrument on the ground – these will also be useful to keep your horns clean/dry. It is recommended that Trumpets and Trombones also bring one to use when necessary.

LYRES

LYRES: ALL WIND PLAYERS . . . well, almost all winds (Flute/Pic, Trombone, and Tuba are excluded) must provide their own lyre for use during stand band with flip folders. Note: Flip Folders are provided.

COVID-19 INFORMATION

FLIP FOLDERS (for wind players) will be SIGNED OUT to each individual member to avoid sharing these items during the season. Members will be responsible for their own flip folder and should plan to have it with your instrument/belongings at every rehearsal.

SAXOPHONES & CLARINETS

REEDS: Please make sure you have a selection of appropriate reeds with you. It is recommended, due to the number of rehearsals and performances as well as the changing weather conditions, that you have at least 3 or 4 reeds to choose from at all times. Please have these in some type of reed case in order to protect them in your case during the seasons.

USING THE SAME REED ALL SEASON IS NOT ACCEPTABLE (unless you have a quality synthetic reed): A good sound, even on a “marching” horn, can only be created with good equipment, a quality mouthpiece, ligature, and reed.

MUSIC STANDS

The Marching Royal Dukes will provide music stands for every member to be used during rehearsals. Individuals are welcome to bring their own if preferred. It is the responsibility of each member to make sure to have this stand with them at all rehearsals.

Page 11: MRD CAMP - INFORMATION PACKET 2020 UPDATED Camp 2020/MRD-CAMP... · case in case yours gets lost or damaged) • Hand sanitizer (pack extra in your instrument case, backpack, vehicle,

COVID-19 INFORMATION MUSIC STANDS will be provided for every member. SHARING MUSIC STANDS WILL NOT BE POSSIBLE due to our plans for physical distancing at all rehearsals. Individuals will be responsible for having their own music stand at every rehearsal.

MRD COURSE FEE There is a $150 course fee connected to your enrollment in MUAP 237. The fee amount is determined by the University Budget Office and is applied to specific “consumable” supplies and materials. Consumable items are considered to be those which are used only for the purpose of this class/activity and are consumed/used completely during the course of the semester. While the this only covers a small fraction of the cost of these items, it does help to decrease the overall operational cost and therefore increase the services and experience we can provide for our members. This fee also ensures members will not incur any additional charges to participate in our program (with the exception of charges related to damage to/loss of university equipment, instruments, or uniforms).

MRD ONLINE STORE

For members who want to purchase additional MRD REQUIRED uniform items - or –

FAMILY/FRIENDS/ALUMNI who are interested in MRD merchandise: hoodies, t-shirts, quarter zips, hats, souvenir items, etc. . . .

! ! ! NEW FOR 2019 ! ! ! (third time’s a charm)

-REQUIRED FOR ALL MRDs-

WE ARE UPGRADING our drill-learning technology to hopefully provide a better, more reliable drill-learning experience. The Marching Royal Dukes will be using the Ultimate Drill Book App for all drill charts/coordinate sheets this season.

WHAT DOES IT DO?

With this app, each individual will be able to: 1. View the drill sets and access your coordinates 3. Animate each move while your position is highlighted 4. Retrieve updated drill sets/coordinates immediately 5. Manage Attendance, view season schedules, etc.

WHY DO WE USE IT?

This app will allow us to share and learn drill in a more efficient and informative way. MORE EFFICIENT: You can have this information available to you at all times, and all new drill or updates to current drill charts will be automatically available. MORE INFORMATIVE: Not only will this app provide you with your coordinates, it will also allow you to view the drill sets (big picture) and see the animation of each move while you are on the field. With the UDB app, we can include Music PDFs as well as interface our season calendar and attendance.

HOW DO YOU GET IT?

! ! ! THIS APP IS FREE ! ! !

CAMP MUSIC PACKETS – WIND PLAYERS ONLY ALL WIND PLAYERS should download their respective music packet from the MRD Website. Each packet will contain select music from pregame and Show 1:

• JMU Fight Song • JMU School Song • Start Wearing Purple (pregame) • Get It On (MRD traditional encore tune) • Salvation is Created (MRD Chorale) • Show 1 Opener: The World Turned Upside Down (from Hamilton)

ATTENTION ALL WIND PLAYERS MUSIC PLACEMENT AUDITIONS & ALTERNATES

ALL WIND PLAYERS will participate in placement auditions on TUESDAY, August 25, 6-9pm. Audition results will primarily be used to determine part assignments and drill spot assignments for our halftime shows. For 2020 this will assist the staff with dividing the band into 2 equally balanced ensembles to share stand band/field show responsibilities during game days. AUDITION INFORMATION Music auditions will take place at Bridgeforth Stadium or other outdoor locations as assigned (Hillside Field/Football Practice Fields) and will be organized/managed by the section leadership team.

• The audition will consist of music selected from the online camp packet (likely Fight Song, Show 1 opener, and scales)

• The music does NOT have to be memorized. • If your section has divided parts (clarinet, alto sax, mellophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone) please

choose the part with which you are most comfortable to prepare. • Auditions will be BLIND and individual members ranked anonymously.

MRD ALTERNATE PAIRS – UPDATED FOR 2020

For regular seasons (i.e NOT 2020) each section will have a specified number of alternate pair positions. This system has been designed to balance instrumentation and ensure that all wind players have the opportunity to perform during halftime/postgame shows. However, for the 2020 season THERE WILL BE NO ALTERNATE PAIRS ASSIGNED. If pregame/halftime shows are produced, everybody will have their own charted position.

PART ASSIGNMENTS will be determined from MUSIC PLACEMENT AUDITIONS Auditions (see below) will take place on TUESDAY, August 25 6-9pm

If there are multiple/divided parts for your instrument/section, ALL PARTS WILL BE INCLUDED in your music packet.

Please select the part you feel is most appropriate for your range/ability. to PREPARE PRIOR TO YOUR ARRIVAL AT MRD CAMP.
