Before you moving on; some of you know where you’re going to school, don’t fully factor that in for this project. How do you view the ideal university for everyone to attend, keep that in perspective!!

What’s the difference between a college and a university?

A college is a smaller institution that typically offers undergraduate degrees. Some colleges, such as community colleges and junior colleges, may offer only two-year degrees. Most colleges offer bachelor’s degrees, and some colleges also have associate degrees.

A university is an institution that offers undergraduate and graduate degrees. Universities offer graduate programs leading to a master’s degree or a Ph.D. These institutions also may have a medical or law school for students wishing to pursue professional degrees. Some universities offer special programs where their students can earn both an undergraduate degree and a graduate degree in a reduced amount of time. Generally, universities have a more diverse offering of classes and programs than a college because of the larger number of enrolled students.

What is the difference between a college and a university? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Will your newly created school be a college or university? Why did you choose that option? Explain. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

What will be the name of your school: ________________________________________________________________________

What is the meaning behind the name? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Will your school be located in an Urban (city), Suburban, or rural area? Why do you feel this setting is the best fit for your school? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

As previously stated, you have total control over how this college operates; in terms of a learning environment you get to decide which majors and courses students will have the options of studying. This is an important step because certain type of majors will attract students to your school, also the total amount of them as well.

List all the possible majors and courses you think would benefit learners the most!

Why do you feel that this collection of majors and courses will benefit learners more than other options? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

When researching your own schools, how big of a factor were specific majors that a school had or didn’t have? Why did you prioritize it or why not? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Think of your ideal classroom setting; do you prefer small classes (less than 20), large lecture halls (over 200), or somewhere in the middle? Why do you feel this setting leads to more success? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The average course load for a college degree is 120 credits over 4 years; each class averaging 3 credits per class. Will your school have a lower, higher, or similar credit amount? Will each course be weighted more or less based on the amount of credits per class? Would you prefer to take more classes that are fewer credits, or fewer classes that are worth more credits with more work? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Will this school be a publicly or privately funded institution? Why? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

College class times per week can range from: (per 1 class): 3 classes for 50 min each, 2 classes for 1 hour 20 min each, or 1 class for 3 hours. Do you think this should be the allotted time, or do you think the classes should be timed differently? It’s your school, what will benefit the learning process the most? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

School Identity

Each and every school has their own identity by which they are known. For this section, use your creativity to create nicknames, school colors, logos, athletic teams, and clubs.

What will be your school nickname? This is crucial for branding and recognition. (Ex. Florida State Seminoles, Miami Hurricanes, Stony Brook Seawolves, Texas Longhorns)

_______________________________________________________________________

What is the significance of this nickname? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

What are your school colors? (Must pick at least 2)

__________________ ___________________ __________________ _______________

Creating a logo is also important for branding and recognition, for this part, you will create one design that includes the abbreviation of letters of the school, and the other should be along the lines of your schools nickname.

Examples:

Create your logos in the provided boxes:

Athletics and Clubs

Providing your students with opportunities to show off their individual talents will help them blossom into their full potential. Scholarship opportunities will also help you get some of the best students in the world to come to your school.

Due to the Title IX laws, there NEEDS to be an equal amount of female and male sports. Below you will decide just exactly which sports your school will offer. Remember that each of these sports cost a fair share of money to run.

Division I schools have the biggest student bodies, the largest athletic budgets, and the most athletic scholarships. More than 350 schools that field more than 6,000 teams providing opportunities to more than 170,000 student-athletes are members of NCAA Division I.

Almost 300 schools are part of Division II. Division II schools still offer athletic scholarships, but there are fewer scholarships than in Division I. Most Division II athletes receive partial athletic scholarships.

Division III is the largest of all of the NCAA divisions. There are 444 institutions and more than 170,000 student-athletes. A key difference in Division III is that there are no athletic scholarships. However, a majority of the athletes are on some form of academic or need-based aid. Also, there are shorter practice hours and less travel for games in D III.

Will your athletic program be Division I, II, or III? Why? Which aspects will benefit a student-athlete more? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Do you think there is another level of importance for athletic competition other than playing a sport you enjoy? What can it lead to or build for an individual? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Clubs

Providing an ample amount of clubs will give more opportunities for your student body to get involved. Discuss and create which specific clubs will be offered at your institution.

Do you think it is important for students to interact with their community? Why/Why not? Explain. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Do you feel clubs provide the opportunity for students to make change, not only at the school, but also in the real world? Why/Why not? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Student Enrollment

The size of your school will impact each and every one of your students, below are the average sizes of college campuses with examples.

"Small-" fewer than 5,000 students. These are typically private colleges like Hobart, Colgate, Grinnell, and Reed. Yet, it is entirely possible to find small public colleges, such as SUNY Geneseo and Delaware State University.

Many colleges fall into the "medium" category, between 5,000 to 15,000 students. Yale, Brown, Howard, Duke, University of Arkansas, University of Montana, and Binghamton University are all medium-sized.

"Large-" more than 15,000 students. University of Southern California, New York University, and University of Pennsylvania qualify as large on the private side; UCLA, Michigan State, and University of Texas at Austin on the public side. A label of "huge" would be more accurate for those public universities that have more than 30,000 students.

Which category will your school fall into? (Small, medium, large, huge) ________________________

In terms of student population, about how many students will be enrolled in your school? ________________________

Why do you feel this school size will be most beneficial for student success, achievement, personal growth, and to have an overall positive college experience? Explain. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

What were the deciding factors for not picking any of the campus sizes? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Student Acceptance Rate

Many schools are actually rated based on the amount of students they deny from their institution rather than those whom they accept. Schools with lower acceptance rates are typically some of the best academic schools out there and are also typically high in cost.

Stanford University 5.1%

Harvard University 6%

Columbia University 7%

Notre Dame 21.5%

Babson College 26.4%

U.S. Naval Academy 7.9%

Duke University 11.5%

University of Michigan 32.3%

University of Montana 94.2%

Examples:

Typically more private based schools will have lower acceptance rates because they have more say over who will be accepted or not. Many SUNY schools for into the middle of the pack because they are public. Schools will acceptance rates near 100% may have difficulties with student enrollment and need more students to make money!

Binghamton 41%

Stony Brook 41%

Buffalo 59%

Albany 59%

New Paltz 43%

Oswego 55%

Oneonta 53%

Cortland 52%

Farmingdale 58%

Brockport 55%

Plattsburgh 51%

Geneseo 67%

What will your acceptance rate as an institution of higher learning be? _________________

What factors will go into your decisions whether you will accept or deny a student from your school? Where will emphasis be placed? What will be looked at less? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Do you think colleges in general have the right to accept and deny whomever they want? Why/Why not? How can the process change? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

School Mission Statement

This is your opportunity to tell the world what each student will get out of going to your school. What they will learn, who they can become, etc. This is a way to legitimize your institution.

Specific Rules and Guidelines

You’ve been in school for the last 12 years and have been told what to do for 181 days each of those years. Now is your opportunity to make the rules! Set forth unique, creative, and even funny rules and regulations that you see fit for the ideal school. Have fun with it!!! (Need at least 8 rules)

Last Step: Campus Map

Attached is a Map with 21 points of interest and 4 streets. Your job is to label all of them! Remember to include: class buildings, dorms, dining halls, library, bookstore, athletic facilities, etc. Be creative and actually name your buildings too, “Dining hall,” or “class building,” won’t result in points.
