Bio for Solomon Rivera

Solomon Rivera has been a senior legislative staffer, campaign manager and community organizer, working for the past 30 year towards improving social, political and economic conditions in Los Angeles and the state of California. Solomon is now proud to serve as Chief of Staff to L.A. City Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson, representing the 8th Council District. Prior to that he served as Deputy Chief of Staff for Congressmember Karen Bass, representing California’s 37th Congressional District. He was also a Special Assistant for Ms. Bass when she was the Speaker of the California State Assembly. Solomon ran Bass’ campaigns for state and federal office, tapping into the grassroots power of the L.A. social justice movement. He also served as the Deputy Political & Field Director for the California Democratic Party in the 2004 cycle, and in 2010 oversaw the countywide GOTV efforts for the L.A. County Federation of Labor, as part of a statewide effort to elect Governor Brown and Attorney General Harris.

From 2004 - 2008 Solomon was Executive Director of Californians for Justice, a grassroots organization that organized policy campaigns throughout the state, towards eliminating the racial achievement gap in California’s public schools. From 1994 - 2003 Solomon served as Associate Director of Community Coalition for Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment, and started their youth organizing project, South Central Youth Empowered Through Action (SCyEa), which became a national model for youth organizing.

Solomon is a true believer building grassroots organizations with progressive politics, combined with effective vehicles to mobilize voters, and a pipeline of candidates to represent new majorities in California and the nation. Working for Councilmember Harris-Dawson, Solomon has helped with groundbreaking work on new policies to reduce homelessness and create an equitable policy as the foundation for the legalized cannabis industry. Solomon is also the proud father of his 17-year-old daughter, Camila.

Dear Mr. Rivera:

I am pleased to inform you that I hereby appoint you to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission. In order to complete the process as quickly as possible, there are several steps that must be taken.

To begin the appointment process, please review, sign and return the enclosed Remuneration Form, Undated Separation Forms, Background Check Release and Information Sheet within one week of receiving this letter. These documents are necessary to ensuring the most efficient, open and accountable City government possible. Further, Mayor’s Office policy requires you to be fingerprinted as part of the background check that is done on all potential Commissioners. To do so, please bring this letter to the Background Unit of Employment Services Division, Personnel Department Building, 700 East Temple Street, Room 235, Los Angeles, California 90012. The division phone number is (213) 473-9343. Fingerprints must be taken within three working days from the receipt of this letter.

As part of the City Council confirmation process, you will need to meet with Councilmember Curren Price, the Chair of the Economic Development Committee, to answer any questions he may have. You will be hearing from a City Council committee clerk who will let you know when your appointment will be considered by the Economic Development Committee. Sometime thereafter, you will be notified by the committee clerk when your appointment will be presented to the full City Council for confirmation. Once you are confirmed, you will be required to take the oath of office in the City Clerk’s Office in Room 395 of City Hall. Claudia Luna will assist you during the confirmation process if you have questions.
