UNESCO includes Göreme National Park as both a Cultural and Natural site of significance. The site meets two specific criteria:

• to exhibit an important interchange of human values, over a span of time or within a cultural area of the world, on developments in architecture or technology, monumental arts, town-planning or landscape design and

• to contain superlative natural phenomena or areas of exceptional natural beauty and aesthetic importance

The Cappadocia region of Turkey was once the heart of the ancient Hittite empire. Years of weathering have created unique volcanic rock formations and water eroded valleys. Tourists from around the world come to the area “to visit the churches and chapels of the Göreme, Zelve and Soğanli Open Air-Musuems; to explore the rock-hewn dwellings in surrounding valleys; to gaze on the fairy chimneys; to walk the Ihlara Valley; and to plumb the depths of the underground cities at Derinkuyu and Kaymakli.”
