RESEARCH In November 2008 I was awarded my MD(Res) (Res refers to research – the modern equivalent of an MD) by London University for my thesis “The Efficacy and Mechanism of Action of Insulin as an Anti-scarring agent”. This research was undertaken full time over a two year period at the RAFT Institute of Plastic Surgery. The laboratory work demonstrated that insulin’s effect of inhibiting myofibroblast differentiation is due to the inhibition of the activation of TGF-β1. A clinical trial undertaken in bilateral breast reduction patients showed that the treated wounds had significantly improved normal scarring. This work has been presented at several international conferences and won several prizes and is undergoing a patent application process after which the work will be published.

ELECTIVE Oddanchatram Christian Fellowship Hospital, Tamil Nadu, South India, 02-03.00. This inspirational hospital served the very poor local rural population, charging only what the patients could afford and accepting no donations. It demonstrated how much can be achieved with only limited resources if the will is there. I worked in the General Surgical and Orthopaedic and Trauma Units where my interest in Plastic Surgery was first sparked by assisting in hand trauma and cleft lip and palate surgery.
