In 2017, students have achieved something really special. As of today 85 students Kindergarten to Year 2 have achieved GOLD level and 73 students Years 3-6 have achieved GOLD level. In total, that makes 158 students at GOLD. Furthermore, 67 students have received 35 or more Guildford Stars meaning they have reached VIP level. This is an extraordinary result. Good morning special guests, parents, carers, staff and boys and girls. Today we acknowledge students for outstanding achievement in learning and leading. Throughout 2017, Guildford PS teachers have come to know students and how they learn. Likewise, students understand the high expectations of their teachers. Students have developed a greater understanding of what good maths or writing looks and sounds like, how it can be improved (bumped up) and what it will look and sound like when it is improved. Teaching and learning focused on creating experiences that meet individual needs, readiness, interests and aspirations. Teachers and students continued to fine tune their skills in being collaboration, creative and critical thinking. Firstly, let me congratulate the students for working together to make 2017 a year that truly reflects what GPS is about. There are four words that reflect what learning at Guildford PS is about. 1. SAFE (strong voice) – standing up for what is right, helping others to learn and building your own thoughts and opinions. 2. RESPECTFUL (supportive) - consistently looking out to support others, setting a good example, doing things that help make GPS a safe, interesting and fun place to learn. 3. RESPONSIBLE (collaborative learning) - working with others to create new and improved ways of doing things. 4. LEARNER (being a strong leader) – setting learning goals which are not too hard but also not too easy If you have been sent to me with excellent work this year, raise your hand. I encourage parents, carers and teachers to look around at these students who consistently work at improving their skills and knowledge. I am truly a very fortunate individual having students visit me to share their learning. I often ask “What are you learning about?” We have a conversation about their work and what they have learned. My final question is usually, “What’s another way you could have done this?” or “What are going to do next?” I thank all students for being the heart of the school, for working hard to improve yourself as a learner and person. Secondly, It is important to understand that your parents, carers and elders send you to school every day expecting you to improve your ways of communicating and problem solving. Expecting their child to be a good speaker and listener, a valuable friend, well organised, interested, focused and committed. On behalf of the school staff I extend an enormous Thank you! for helping us to help your children – our students. We value the strong connection between teacher and parent or carer. It is essential in making a positive impact your child’s learning. Thirdly, I take this opportunity to highlight the significant role teachers and support staff play in ensuring children access the best educational experiences. Patient, resourceful, compassionate, creative and courageous teachers. Mrs Habib earlier this year shared a quote with teachers at a staff meeting “when the student is ready, the teacher will appear”. GPS teachers are committed to planning and collaborating on interesting, real and effective learning experiences. They know their students and how they best learn. They build trust and ensure students fit and are challenged in activities, while being supported. GPS teachers are committed to providing a safe, supportive and productive learning environment & they ensure that the needs of all students are met with rich classroom experiences. I congratulate teachers on your 2017 class and personal achievements and thank you for your incredible commitment to educating children.

Throughout the year we have had many many excursions or whole school events. Who can forget the Kindergarten farm excursion or the Year 5&6 Canberra excursion. But the experiences that probably had most impact on students, may have been in school activities: PEER SUPPORT, the Gymnastics program, Healthy Harold, SRC fundraising, yesterday’s Environmental Games Day or perhaps it will come from tomorrow’s CAPA showcase which will exhibit the best of our students creative and performing arts skills . These extra activities are so incredibly valuable to developing all students social and emotional wellbeing. I extend a big ‘Thank you’ to the staff, parents and volunteers who make these experiences happen. Talking of volunteers. Many of our students volunteer their mornings, recesses or lunch times to make our school a better place. They give up their time to assist in the Library, as Canteen monitor, to raise our three flags each morning, they deliver medical bags to teachers on duty, they pick up rubbish in the playground. The debating team collaborate best arguments, senior students act as tour guides for new families, SRC organise fundraisers for people in great need, just to name a few. To these children, your contribution is appreciated and greatly respected. In particular I thank our 2017 student leaders for their exceptional contribution. Captains: Yusef Tarabiya & Jana El Ramlawi. Vice captains: Yousef Nabizadeh and Sytori No-ble. Prefects: Alexandra Floyd, Zach Keogh, Madison Ose-kerita, Austin Flood, Nicole Tan Terles and Ali Hamdan. To one and all - thank you for making Guildford PS an outstanding school to be a member of. Keep safe in the holidays and return ready to learn in 2018. Prefects: Rosabel Gyan Exodus Rees Bibi Karimi Ali Safa Vice Captains: Ainsley Eastwood Justin Phan Captains: Kimmy Chung Zaynab El Ramlawi Twice this year students, parents and teachers have been invited to participate in the 'Tell them from Me' survey. Following are ten snapshots of the survey results. The results of each survey will assist staff in developing the 2018-2020 School Plan which is responsive to student needs while addressing the areas highlighted by parents and teachers as strengths and areas of improvement.

2018 Kindy Transition Children at school to

prepare for

THERE were plenty of smiles and just a few tears as nearly 70 children got their first taste of what to expect when they start their formal education at Guildford Public School next year. Deputy Principal Salam Haidar said the four and five year olds and their parents were taking part in the school's Kindergarten Transition Program. She said most children separated quite easily from their parents, although there were a few tears as the children headed off towards the classrooms with the teachers. "But they settled quickly once they arrived," she said. "For the next three weeks the children will be en-gaged in a range of developmental activities to help them become familiar with school and routines which will assist them with the transition to school in 2018. "This also gives teachers the opportunity to get to know the children and identify their needs as well as how to best support them in this transition." Parents will also participate in workshops on how to help their children at home.

Stage One

Congratulations to all students and staff on what has been an incredible year in Stage One. Teachers have ensured that all students have experienced differentiated learning opportuni-ties, which have allowed them to become successful learn-ers, confident and creative individuals. Progress achieved this year in Reading: At the end of 2017, 75% of Year 1 students and 81% of Year 2 students are achieving or exceeding expected reading lev-els. This has been such a huge growth compared to the be-ginning of the year where only 14% of Year 1 students and 31% of Year 2 students were on track to achieve expected reading levels. It is evident that Early Action for Success (EAfS) is improving students' literacy and numeracy skills through a targeted ap-proach in the early years of schooling. Reading is an important skill and children learn about the importance of reading as they watch family members use reading and writing for everyday purposes. Reading with your child at home will help your child in all learning areas of school. Children see you reading and writing in everyday life – reading for pleasure, sharing a story with your child, using a recipe, making a shopping list, writing a birthday card or read-ing street signs. It is important that children read daily and main-tain a regular routine over the holiday peri-od.
