Review of Year 8 We also had students who were highly successful in other areas, both in and out of school: - Ashley Saunders was awarded a Junior BAFTA for her leading role in

the TrueTube movie “Refugee”. - Emma Joll, Grace Allum, Evan Brewin, Eleanor Verrier, and Toby

Webb all made the shortlist of finalists out of 70,000 entrants in the “Thank You” letter awards and Evan Brewin was chosen as one of the Jubilee Centre’s competition winners.

- Several students went to Venice with the Wind Band and impressed in outstanding musical performances.

- The Debating Society welcomed MP Jonathan Lord and he was most impressed by the enthusiasm and awareness of our students.

- All Year 8 students have been fabulous when taking part in House Competitions.

• Each year there are only 190 statutory school days in school, 380 registration sessions.

• This means there are 175 days (weekends and school holidays) for shopping, birthday treats, non-urgent medical and dental appointments, holidays etc.

• If you miss 8 days of school in a year, then you are out of school more than you are in school!

• If you miss a day a week for your entire school life then it is equivalent to missing 1 year of school!

Impact of Poor Attendance

Impact of Poor Punctuality

• 5 minutes late is 3 days lost each year.

• 10 minutes late is 6.5 days lost each year.

• 15 minutes late is 10 days lost each year.

• 20 minutes late is 13 days lost each year.

• 30 minutes late is 19 days lost each year.

Year 9: Russell Group Reading Group (last Wed. of every month – after school) E2b: A reading group for those who really enjoy reading widely and who want to expand their literary knowledge to prepare for studying literature or related subjects at higher education level. Year 9 Youth-Speaks Competition – Teams are selected in the first term, first round of the competition is in November and then the event continues until the team are knocked out. This prestigious National competition is sponsored by Woking District Rotary Club. Woking High School has an excellent record in public speaking and we have been the local schools’ champions for the last seven years, with teams in the National finals and semi finals. Students compete in teams of three (a chairperson, speaker and vote of thanks) on an issue that they choose as important to them. It allows our most able students to showcase both their writing, speaking and listening talents.

All Years- Reading Project room: Once a week an English room is kept open at lunchtime or after school to provide a space for students to complete work on their reading projects. All Years Word Games Club: Word games club meets once a week (Wed lunch) and is an opportunity for students to enjoy a game of Scrabble or Boggle and stretch their vocabulary at the same time. All Years: Poetry By Heart Competition – A Day 11 event with a poetry Slam celebration, date to be confirmed. Poetry By Heart is an inspiring National competition for all secondary school students. Our Key Stage 3 students learn a Shakespearian sonnet, and those in Years 10 and 11 learn two poems, one of which will be from their GCSE anthology. Learning poetry by heart is a useful method to allow students to explore the meaning, structure and sound of great poetry. Not only do all our students relish the challenge of the competition, they get the opportunity to learn a skill, and a poem, that they will enjoy and be able to use in their GCSE examinations. All Years: Creative Writing Club Students meet at lunchtime on Fridays to produce and workshop their creative writing.

How can I support my child? • Please encourage your child to start their

revision early – there is a lot of content to learn in Science!

• They can use Educake to set themselves questions on any topic in Science.

• Revision guides are available to purchase from the Science Technicians for £2.50. If you purchased one in Year 7 or Year 8, it also includes the KS3 content for Year 9.

• Workbooks are also available for £2.50. There is a separate workbook for each year.

• Once we start our GCSE units after February half-term, GCSE revision guides will also be available from the Science Technicians.
