Which License Should I Get? We recommend that you get the best license for which you qualify. There are a few options depending on your citizenship and boating experience. The two main Captain’s Licenses issued by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) are the Operator (six pack) and the Master. There are several basic differences between the two credentials, and neither is a prerequisite for the other. MPT can help you decide on the route that’s best for you.

Another option worth considering is the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Yachtmaster Program, which is valid onforeign flagged yachts up to 200gt. This is a great option for yachting professionals pursuing a career operating foreign or UK flagged vessels or for non US citizens as it is a very versatile and internationally recognized qualification.

What Will I Learn in the Class? Both levels of Captain’s License classes include training on:

• Navigation

• Tidal Calculations

• International and Inland Rule of the Road

• Coastal Pilotage

• Meteorology

• Anchoring and Mooring

• Marlinespike

What is the Test Like? This course is USCG approved so you won’t need to take any test at the Coast Guard. You will take written finalexams administered at MPT at the end of the program. They include a selection of the topics covered in the course.Don’t worry we will work with everyone until they are successful. Class participation and study will generally get you through the exams.

Additional EndorsementsOne of the bonuses of attending MPT’s Captain’s License classes is that we give every student the certificationrequired to operate a commercial assistance towing vessel – Course #122 - for free! There is no prerequisiteexperience required to obtain this endorsement on your credential.

We also schedule the Auxiliary Sailing Endorsement Course #103 on one evening during your course for your convenience. This endorsement is only required for inspected auxiliary sail vessels and requires some prerequisite sailing experience.

If your vessel is equipped with Radar, we recommend the Radar Endorsement Course #148 as well. This is a separate5 day class utilizing the MPT SMART Radar Simulation Labs.

When I Finish The Course, How Do I Get My License?

MPT is here to help you every step of the way. You will simply submit your certificate with the following:

• Your completed Application Form

• Boating Experience / Sea Service

• Physical (within 1 year) and Drug Test (within 6 months or proof of random participation)

• Issuance Fees (www.pay.gov)

• Birth Certificate or Passport

• USCG Approved First Aid / CPR Course Certificate (must be taken within one year of captains license application)

• USCG Approved Master / Mate / OUPV Course Certificate (must be taken within one year of captains license application)

• Letters of Character Reference

• TWIC Card (www.TSA.gov)

MPT will help with all or your paperwork, and you will have up to one year after completing the course to send yourpackage to the USCG for processing. Please feel free to call our office for more details on paperwork requirements.

Will I Need Supplies For The Course?MPT provide you with your textbook. You can bring your own plotting tools, charts, rules book and supplies, or choose our popular Captain’s License Kit from the Ship’ Store at MPT when you start the class.

What Is Seatime? In general a day of sea time is defined as 8 hours of watch standing or service per calendar day. When you are gettingyour Six Pack or 100 ton Masters license, the USCG will allow any calendar day where you were operating at least 4 hours to count as a day. In most cases, you will not get extra credit for operating more hours per day. In certain commercial industries, such as Towing Vessels, the USCG may give 1.5 days credit per 12 hour day worked. Also, military experience served in a related capacity may be counted for as much as 60% of the sea service on your transcript and DD2-14. If you have military experience, we recommend that you obtain complimentary career counseling from an MPT Military 2 Mariner Specialist as you may qualify for a higher level of credential and you may be entitled to VA training benefits.

For instance: If you operate your boat all day, or only 4 hours that day, you still get one day of credit. If you go out on a trip this afternoon and come back tomorrow morning, that is two days credit. Remember, a day’s credit for every calendar day you spent at least 4 hours underway. An MPT Student Service Representative will be happy to help you with this if you have any questions.

How Do I Calculate Gross Tons? A vessel’s gross tonnage should be listed on its documentation form. If your vessel is state registered instead or federallydocumented, you can calculate the gross tonnage using the following empirical formula:

L x B x D (depth not draft) x .67 (for power) or .5 (for sail)

100

Are There Other Courses I Should Take? All MPT Captain’s License students receive our Towing Endorsement #122 class for free! If you have sailing experience, you should consider taking the 4 hour MPT Auxiliary Sail Endorsement #103 class. All Captain’s License candidates must take an approved First Aid & CPR #143 class within 1 year of submitting the license application. MPT offers this class as well as an incredible 5 day STCW Basic Safety Training course which includes practical hands-on classes, such as sea survival, fire fighting, first aid, and more. Another great option is the FCC Marine Radio Operators Permit #130 course. Every captain and mate should have a radio license and in many cases this is required by law. If your vessel is equipped with Radar, we strongly encourage you to take our Radar Course #148. MPT also offers a wonderful Approved Engine Course #440 Hands-On Course that many captains, mates and aspiring new engineers have taken and learned a lot of valuable skills. If this will be a career for you, please consider attending our Career Seminar #888 (offered most Thursday nights) to help guide you in how to develop your career in the maritime industry.
