WeapplaudtheMPS forconductingthefir stcomprehensivecompen sationstudyin sincethe1980s.Healthyorgani zationsstrivetodothi sregularlytomaintain fair workplaces.Itistroub lingthatthestudyrevealedseriouspayinequitiesinMPS,but wesupportthesup erintendent’sdecisionto promptlyaddressthep roblem.Thereis nowrongtimeto dotherightthing.Compensatingstaffequitably isthemorally right,riskadverse,andlegallyastutethingtodo. SuperintendentJohnson isaccountableforaddressing high-needschoolsand assemblingateamofaccountableandtalentedstaffmemberstoimproveoutcomes. Toaidherbestwork wepreferaboardthat supportsthesuperintendentinpublic anddisagreeswithher inprivate.Webelieveth isisparticularlyimp ortantduring thesetimesofintensescrut inyontheeffectiveness oftheschoolsystem.Acohesive leadershipteam,whichin cludesthesuperintendentandt heboard,buildspublic confidenceandisthehallmar kofahighperformingorganization. achievementgapandimprovingpubliceducationforallstudents.TothatendourEducationandLifeLongLearningWorkGrouplooksforwardtoworkingwithyouin

thenearfuture.

TodaywewritewithconcernsabouttheproposedPolicy2405thatimpactsthe

superintendent’smanagerialprerogativewhencontractingandcompensatingher

leadershipteam.Weunderstandthecircumstancesbehindit,butthisappearstobe

apermanentreactiontoatemporarytensionbetweentheboardandthe

superintendent.Further,theproposedpolicyopensthedoortounproductive

micromanagement.WeseenoreasonthatMinneapolisPublicSchoolsshouldbetheonlydistrictinMinnesotawherethedistrict’sleaderisweakenedinthisway.

WeapplaudtheMPSforconductingthefirstcomprehensivecompensationstudyin

sincethe1980s.Healthyorganizationsstrivetodothisregularlytomaintainfair

workplaces.ItistroublingthatthestudyrevealedseriouspayinequitiesinMPS,butwesupportthesuperintendent’sdecisiontopromptlyaddresstheproblem.Thereis

nowrongtimetodotherightthing.Compensatingstaffequitablyisthemorally

right,riskadverse,andlegallyastutethingtodo.

SuperintendentJohnsonisaccountableforaddressinghigh-needschoolsand

assemblingateamofaccountableandtalentedstaffmemberstoimproveoutcomes.

Toaidherbestworkwepreferaboardthatsupportsthesuperintendentinpublic

anddisagreeswithherinprivate.Webelievethisisparticularlyimportantduringthesetimesofintensescrutinyontheeffectivenessoftheschoolsystem.Acohesive

leadershipteam,whichincludesthesuperintendentandtheboard,buildspublic

confidenceandisthehallmarkofahighperformingorganization.
