Scenario 1

A stray dog jumps a fence and gets into the garden of your setting.

The dog bites a child….

What do you do?

● Remove other children from danger● Control the bleeding● Treat the child for shock● Minimise the risk of infection● Call the child’s parents● Take the child to hospital● Seek advice about a tetanus injection● If the wound is deep, control the bleeding by applying direct pressure

using a sterile pad and raise the injured part

What do you do?

● Check for signs of anaphylactic shock i.e. breathing difficulties or swelling of the face or neck

● If concerned phone an ambulance, or if the child has a known allergy administer their epi-pen

● If the sting is visible, brush it sideways with the edge of a credit card.● Raise area to minimise swelling● Monitor vital signs

● Lie the casualty down and reassure them● Call 999● If there is no pain apply a pressure bandage● Monitor the member of staff and record their vital signs
