A new truck deal between Victorian-based earthmoving and civil works

company Eastern Plant Hire (EPH) and William Adams aims to position Cat trucks as the prime mover of choice for EPH owner operators. EPH Managing Director Michael Willson negotiated the purchasing agreement to add two Cat CT 610 truck and dogs to the fleet. According to Willson, the deal not only delivers private owners pricing, service and maintenance benefits, but will also offer priority work scheduling from EPH.“Our two Cat trucks are just the start of what we hope is a long term

relationship between Cat, William Adams, EPH and our owner operators,” Willson said. “We are saying, EPH is proud to run the Cats as our flagship trucks. This should encourage our operators to also consider them.“Cat and William Adams are supplying the product, the owner is providing the means to buy the truck and EPH will come to the party with the work.“The only benefit that EPH receives out of this deal is having our operators driving around in quality trucks. Cat is a strong brand and they have produced a reliable truck.” The CT 610s are fitted with a Hercules

tipper and dog bodies, which meet PBS requirements. “The CT 610 with a three axle super dog will give us 31.5-tonne payload on normal routes and 32.5-tonne on B-double routes,” Willson said. Based in Clayton, Victoria, William Adams supplies Caterpillar products and services to the construction, mining, quarrying, agricultural, on-highway trucks and marine markets. Caterpillar is the one of world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and diesel-electric locomotives. ■

The Kempsey bypass on the NSW mid-north coast is a step closer

to completion, with the finishing touches applied to the 3.2-kilometre bridge that stretches over the Macleay River. The final support beam of the bridge has been put in place, connecting what is now Australia’s longest bridge. The completion of the bridge is an impressive feat, with 941 concrete beams (each weighing 65 tonnes) and supported by 93 piers.A total of 2.6 million cubic metres of earthworks has been involved in the project, which also included a new flood levee at Frederickton. When completed, the 14.5-kilometre divided highway will take up to 2000 trucks a day off the local streets of Kempsey and

Frederickton, delivering faster, safer and smoother driving conditions for all motorists who use that stretch of highway.Road transport operators will benefit from significantly reduced

travel times and operating costs. The next step for this project is to lay the concrete deck. The project commenced in June 2010 and the Kempsey Bypass is on schedule to be completed by mid-2013. ■

According to recent studies by the Victorian Government’s

Transport Accident Commission (TAC), daytime running lights are able to prevent almost 25 per cent of fatalities in multiple vehicle daytime accidents, 20 per cent of casualties in multiple vehicle daytime accidents and 12.4 per cent of multiple vehicle daytime accidents. Daytime running lights have also been found to increase drivers’ peripheral perception of vehicles and have minimised the number of right-hand turn accidents during recent Australian motorist trials. It is also acknowledged from further international accident studies that

failing to see another road user in time (or at all) is a contributing factor in over 50 per cent of all daytime accidents. For daytime intersection accidents, this figure increases to as much as 80 per cent. For these reasons alone, it is easy to understand why the European Union made these safety enhancing vehicle lights mandatory

on all new passenger vehicles produced from 2011 and commercial vehicles from 2013. Lighting specialist Hella is one company that already offers a comprensive range of universal retro-fit LED daytime running lights which can be fitted to any vehicle. They are activated once the vehicle ignition is switched on and will switch off automatically once the headlamps or parking lights are activated. According to Hella Australia, it should take no longer than one to two hours (on average) to fit any Hella daytime driving lights to a commercial vehicle with clear fitting instruction included. ■

In a simultaneous launch held in five cities across Europe, the all new

Volvo FH was revealed to the industry. The FH will replaces the original Volvo flagship that was first launched in 1993 and has since sold more than 650,000 units. The FH is an entirely new truck, with a new cab and upgraded drivelines as well integration of various innovative electronic systems that Volvo says will deliver improved performance, economy and driver acceptance.According to Volvo, the Euro 5 driveline is now even more economical and the I-See software package for the I-Shift

transmission will make life even easier for drivers and save even more fuel. The I-See software stores information about hills as the truck drives along. “The next time the truck uses the same route, I-See operates the accelerator, gears and brakes to ensure that progress is as economical as possible,” Claes Nilsson, President of Volvo Truck Corporation, said. “Thanks to I-See, the haulage firm can cut fuel consumption by up to five per cent per vehicle.”The new Volvo FH also offers individual front suspension that is expected to provide car-like handling and the cab interior features an improved driver’s

seat along with an industry-first tilt-neck function for the steering wheel. Stalks and controls are arranged so that the most important ones are closest to the driver. The cab’s A-pillars are more vertical than the existing model and provide an additional one cubic metre of interior space, which allows for an extra 300 litres of storage capacity. Production of the new FH will start in the 2013 European spring for the European market. Gary Bone, Vice President Volvo Trucks, Australia Sales, said the new FH will be launched in Australia in 2013. ■

The Australian Government’s National Land Freight Strategy will boost

productivity and safety on the roads according to the Chief Executive of the Australian Trucking Association, Stuart St Clair. The Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese released the strategy this month, which calls for trialling the use of high productivity vehicles like B-triples and super B-doubles on key freight routes such as the Hume Highway. According to St Clair, increasing the use of high productivity vehicles will enable the trucking industry to use freight routes more efficiently and reduce the

need for new infrastructure. He also stated it will boost safety, as reducing the growth in the number of trucks and other vehicles on the road will result in fewer accidents.“It takes 42 semi-trailers to deliver a thousand tonnes of freight, but only 20 B-triples. The chance of an accident is influenced by the number of vehicles on the road, so when you reduce the number of vehicles you need to do the job, you reduce the accident risk,” St Clair said.“In addition, the prime movers used in high productivity vehicles like B-triples and super B-doubles are new and equipped with the latest safety features,

such as adaptive cruise control and lane assist technology to alert the driver if the truck drifts from the centre of its lane. And finally, their drivers are licensed to a higher standard than semitrailer and rigid truck drivers.”St Clair added that increasing the use of high productivity vehicles would also deliver environmental gains. “If we take the example of moving a thousand tonnes of freight again, by using 20 B-triples you would emit 32 per cent less carbon dioxide than the 42 semi-trailers you would otherwise need,” he said. “The Government’s strategy is a win for productivity, a win for safety – and a win for the environment as well.” ■

Land Freight Strategy to boost productivity and safety

Minister for Roads and Ports in NSW, Duncan Gay, announced

that upgraded breakdown lanes on 900 kilometres of the state’s major highways will be constructed to provide a minimum width of 2.5 metres. The standard for new highway construction is three metres. This announcement came after debate in NSW State Parliament initiated by a 23,000-signature petition. Peter Frazer’s daughter Sarah, aged 23, and 40 year old tow truck driver Geoff Clark were struck and killed by a vehicle on the Hume Highway at Ben Dooley Hill just south of Mittagong in February this year. Sarah’s car had broken down and was stranded protruding into a 110-km/hr lane despite being hard up against

the guardrail. Gay said that consultation with the NRMA, Work Cover, Police, RMS and Transport for NSW and a review of 2000 kilometres of the state’s major highways revealed that 900 kilometres had no or insufficient space to get broken down vehicles off the road. The Minister also announced that incident response vehicles such as tow trucks and NRMA patrol vehicles will be legally allowed to use breakdown lanes in order to reach stranded motorists as well as being able to place safety markers behind their vehicles to warn other motorists that they are approaching a stationary vehicle. The section of the Hume Highway where the fatalities occurred will be

reduced to two traffic lanes when the current third “slow vehicle” lane is converted to a breakdown lane. This work on this 1.5 kilometre section is expected to be completed prior to this year’s Christmas holidays.NRMA Group CEO Tony Stuart said breakdown safety was a serious safety issue for both incident responders and motorists. “Breakdown safety potentially affects every person who travels on our roads,” he said. “We are pleased that the NSW Government has announced several changes designed to increase the safety of motorists and incident responders such as tow truck drivers and NRMA roadside patrols while they are doing their job.” ■

New truck seat to hit Australia in October

CVG/KAB Seating’s new GSX 3000 truck seat model will be

available in Australia in October, according to the manufacturer. The GSX 3000 air-ride seat, which debuted at the 2012 IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Germany, will feature a three-point integrated seat belt and an air dump valve to lower the seat and make climbing in and out of the vehicle safer and easier. It also features a new ride positioning system (RPS).

The RPS system automatically adjusts the seat’s suspension according to the driver’s body weight within a weight range of 50-150kg. The driver can then manually adjust the seat to his or her preferred ride height. KAB Seating is the Australian operating division of American-owned Commercial Vehicle Group (CVG), with operating subsidiaries in the UK, Scandinavia, Europe, China and the US. ■

companies pay an equal amount of attention to stopping performance as they do to payload. The role of brake fluid, however, often goes unheeded.Brake fluid must function through heat, cold, and all the variations of temperatures that may affect the brake system, but there is a range of additional functions it has to perform.According to braking expert Bendix, brake fluid also lubricates the moving parts in the brake system and protects the metal (steel and copper) components of the brake system from corrosion.“It goes without saying that the ability of the brake system to function properly is impaired if the master cylinder, slave cylinders and valves, which are made of steel, are worn and corroded,” Bendix states in a recently published Technical Bulletin.“The effects of corrosion are not

immediate and the deleterious effects are cumulative in nature. Cumulative effects over the long term can affect braking efficiency and responsiveness, putting drivers at risk especially during emergency braking situations. Advance corrosion will eventually lead to diminished braking performance, and then eventually brake failure.”Even copper, of which the tubes and ABS internal parts are made, is subject to corrosion. “Copper plating – when copper particles are suspended in the fluid and starts plating into steel parts – can interfere with the proper operation of the ABS system and will eventually result in the failure of the ABS.”As a result, modern brake fluids contain corrosion inhibitors, which neutralise acids in the fluid and form a protective barrier to repel water from the metal surfaces. But, even high-tech brake fluid can deteriorate with age and lose

its effectiveness, so many OEMs recommend brake fluid changes as a form of preventive maintenance and most of their recommendations range from 24 to 30 months. “To reduce risks associated with brake failures, it is also recommended that the brake fluid in your vehicle is tested regularly for moisture contamination and/or depletion of corrosion inhibitors,” Bendix says. ■

German truck manufacturer MAN is developing a hybrid heavy duty

truck in conjunction with US automotive component supplier Remy and global engineering firm Benteler.Remy, well known for its manufacture of automotive alternators and starter motors, will provide its HVH410 electric traction motor and generator for the project. The vehicle, called the Metropolis, is capable of performing heavy-duty transport tasks, such as refuse collection, almost completely without noise or emissions.A lithium-ion battery located beneath the cab drives the Remy electric motor, with additional power and range

extension if required being supplied by a V6 diesel engine from Volkswagen that delivers 150kW (205hp).The battery can easily be recharged from a normal mains socket and the electric operation has been designed for a full day shift, which typically for an urban waste collection vehicle comprises of two four-hour sessions of collection and 15 kilometres of stop-go operation. It is

expected that the diesel “range extender” engine will only be required occasionally during each shift if at all.The Metropolis is based on a MAN TGS 6x2 or 6x4 chassis and the electric motor produces 203kW of power and drives the rear wheels through a two-speed automatic gearbox. Auxiliary units such as air conditioning, power steering and the pump to power the hydraulics for the refuse functions are all operated electrically.Tare weight and weight distribution are similar to a regular diesel powered MAN TGS. The Metropolis is about to participate in a two-year “real-world” assessment on waste collection duties in several Belgian cities. ■

In the European final of the Scania Young Truck Driver of the Year held

in Sweden last weekend, and in front of almost 10,000 spectators, Gabriel Warde from Ireland beat 23 other talented young professional truck drivers from countries throughout Europe.“The driver is absolutely the most important factor in heavy vehicle transport,” Erik Ljungberg, the head of Scania Corporate Relations, said.“Vehicles and infrastructure are obviously of major significance, but fuel-efficient and safe driving is primarily a matter of human behaviour. Through (this completion) Scania wants

to help raise the status of professional drivers and emphasise their great importance to the profitability of transport companies and to road safety, as well as to environmental impact.”More than 17,000 young truck drivers under the age of 35 and from 24 European countries competed in the Scania Young European Truck Driver competition. The final took place over two days and included tests such as defensive and fuel-economy driving, cargo securing, pre- trip checks, rescue and fire situations and safe manoeuvring. Finalists had to prove they had the skill and attitude of responsible heavy truck

drivers as they completed a program consisting of complex manoeuvring and obstacle tests.Scania started the competition in 2003 to highlight the role of the driver and also to attract more young people into the driving profession. The Scania Young Australian Truck Driver of the Year finals will be held in Melbourne on Friday 16 November, with the inaugural Scania Young Australian Bus Driver of the Year held the next day.Eligible Australian drivers no more than 35 years of age have until the end of September to register at the Scania Australia website. ■

The Daniel Morcombe Charity Foundation has taken delivery of

an Isuzu NQR 450 Premium truck. The NQR 450 Premium, which will be used to travel interstate, will fill a number of roles with the main focus being child safety awareness. The NQR 450’s body design spans six metres and provides plenty of room for visitors and volunteers. The concept and design was produced in-house, while the body was built by Caboolture Truck Bodies, Prestige Caravan and RV Works.According to Bruce Morcombe, when the charity was looking for a truck, flexibility was the key element in the selection process as the truck is needed to play a number of roles. “We required a truck that is versatile and can be used as a command centre, meeting point, stage, retail outlet, as well as provide an education and first aid facility,” he said. “Other requirements were that it had adequate highway

power and an automated transmission along with a range of creature comforts. “The truck is a great addition to the charity. Not only does it help us to educate children, but also provides a place for the volunteers to have a quick cuppa between visiting schools.” Bruce and Denise Morcombe set up the Daniel Morcombe Foundation in 2005, two years after the abduction and death of their son. In order to educate

and spread the message of child safety, the charity plans to take the truck to schools, fetes and community forums as well as major events with the help of volunteers. The foundation has also developed a national day of action that focuses on child personal safety. Called ‘Day for Daniel’, the day encompasses walks, morning teas, school activities as well as business and community events. ■

The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) has put forward a submission to

the Australian Workforce and Productivity Agency, highlighting the driver shortages facing the road transport industry and setting out recommendations to both government and industry to address this problem. One explanation for the lack of available drivers is the wages currently offered by competing industries are far higher than what a heavy vehicle driver would be paid. Mining, specifically in Western Australia and Queensland, offers substantial wages above what a road transport driver can earn. The universal expectation is that freight

task is set to double by 2020, and the rate of driver recruitment will need to increase drastically to avoid severe shortages. The ATA’s submission included recommendations to make the industry more attractive for groups who are not typically truck drivers, including women, younger workers and the Indigenous community. Some of the recommendations in the report include promoting the industry to young school leavers, altering licensing regulations and insurance to be less restrictive for young drivers, and improving the work life balance for drivers with family commitments. The ATA acknowledged that the “image”

of the road transport industry was not always conveyed in a positive manner in various media. The age of heavy vehicle drivers was another factor addressed, with new employees required to fill the vacancies created by the retiring drivers. The average age of a truck driver is currently 43 years; higher than the national average for other industries, which is 39 years. A higher average age means that working conditions should be adapted for older workers and forward projections of the proportion of older workers in the industry supports this. The ATA forecasts that nearly half the current workforce will be over 65 by 2026. ■

feature Scania Euro 6

GoinG thenext stepSwedish truck manufacturer, Scania, has already made some euro 6 trucks available on the european market well ahead of its introduction in 2013. tim Giles speaks to the engineer responsible for the new models’ engine at the company’s HQ.

The series of exhaust emission regulation changes of the past 20 years have come thick and fast. the latest emission reduction

to affect europe will be introduced in 2013. euro 6 sees a reduction in nitrogen oxides allowed and a sizeable tightening on the amount of particulate matter in exhaust gases. Scania’s development team in Sodertalje, just outside Stockholm in Sweden, explained to Prime Mover

what has had to be done to the engine systems over the line to meet the latest regulations.euro 6 comes into effect as of 1 January 2013 for new models and extends to all truck models in europe on 1 January 2014. Scania has already released some of the new models onto the european truck market in anticipation of some

governments offering incentives to trucking operators who moved to the cleaner trucks earlier than they are mandated. Low emission incentives were effective in bringing forward the adoption of euro 5 technology in many countries in europe. however, no major european country has yet announced any measure, either reduced road tax or reduced road tolls.the european Union only recently finalised the euro 6 emission level figures first suggested in July 2009, giving truck manufacturers a tight deadline. Apart from the usual limits of allowable pollutants in exhaust gases, a new kind of limit was introduced. this restricts the number of individual particles permitted to be emitted. nitrogen oxides are reduced by 80% when compared to euro 5 levels, down to 0.4g per kilowatt hour. Particulate matter is halved to 0.01g per kilowatt

hour with carbon monoxide unchanged at 1.5 and hydrocarbons reduced by 75% to 0.13.“euro 6 has been, and is, a challenge to us,” says Bjorn Westman, Scania’s engineering Director, head of engine Development. “in practice, the mass limit for particulates has made the amount of particulate matter the engines can emit much smaller than the regulators imagined, i think. When we started looking at euro 6, particulate counting was not on the table. Different scenarios with nitrogen oxide levels and particulate matter mass were discussed along with their effects on fuel economy.“the politicians set the limits knowing it would drive a 2% fuel economy penalty when compared to continuing with euro 5. it was clear to us it would be possible to achieve half the particular mass emissions without

having to use diesel particulate filters (DPF). the authorities did not like that, they wanted to push diesel particulate filters on all diesel vehicles. So they added in the particulate number count. So the industry was forced to add particulate filters. DPF’s add maintenance costs, exhaust back pressures and a further loss in fuel efficiency.”the new european legislation also specified a new ‘World harmonised’ test cycle to be used when assessing trucks for the new regulations. the new test includes much more simulated city driving, and tests both cold and warm engines. this increases the level of difficulty for the truck manufacturers as DPFs have to work even harder in stop start operation. the new test cycle is the toughest of its kind in the world, surpassing the strict Japanese testing procedures. in the past

higher particulate matter levels were allowed in transient cycles with lower levels specified when the vehicle was stationary.the cleanliness of the new exhaust gas particulate filters can be demonstrated by the fact the paper filters are completely clean after 30 minutes operation when compared with the same filter from a euro 5 engine. Further proof of the much improved particulate matter output in the euro 6 engines is in the fact the new exhaust pipes are completely clean inside and over time will become rusty rather than dirty.“Politicians are not supposed to push technology but they have clearly done that in this case,” says Bjorn. “We now have to deal with a regulation which limits us to 800 billion particles per kilowatt hour. this is hard to count, and measurement technology has been

tough to develop to meet this new part of the rules.“however, we do believe that euro 6 is the last major step in the reduction of particulates in exhaust gases. We think the next step in exhaust emission regulation will concentrate on carbon dioxide. even without euro 6 we have seen a huge drop in the level of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter emitted by truck engines out on the roads.”So far, Scania has released two engines from its range as euro 6, the 440 and 480 hp 13 litre. the company says its new engines will achieve the same fuel economy possible with its euro 5 product. this has been achieved by changing the eGR settings in a way that increases nitrogen oxide emissions but also increases fuel economy, running more efficiently. the increased nitrogen oxides are cleaned up by

True to its word

As the son of highly regarded horse trainer

John Hawkes of Hawkes Racing, Wayne

Hawkes was surrounded by trucks from quite

a young age and is now a well-known horse

trainer himself.

“Since I was about 10 years of age, I travelled

around the country with Goldners Horse

Transport from Adelaide – and that’s how the

trucks started for me,” says Wayne. “I always

said I was going to own the biggest and best

float company around – but that went by the

wayside and I became a horse trainer instead,

before establishing Tailored Freight, so it all

just marries together really well.”

The opportunity to start Tailored Freight

arose when Wayne’s long time friend, Todd

Moraitis, was working for his uncle Nick at

the Melbourne fruit market. At the time

a new supermarket depot was being built

on the Albury and Wodonga border and

Todd’s uncle needed to have some freight

transported.

“Todd knew everything there is to know

about fruit and vegetables so that’s basically

how it started,” says Wayne, who began

Tailored Freight with Todd in mid 2006. “The

business almost started overnight.”

Tailored Freight began with four employees

and now employs 11. Based near the

Footscray market in Melbourne, Tailored

Freight began its life with two B-doubles,

towed by a second hand 2005 Mack Vision

prime mover and a brand new Freightliner

Argosy – both of which still have their place

in the fleet today.

Before long, the demand placed on the two

vehicles had increased and there was a need

to implement a third vehicle within the first

six months of the company’s operations. This

year another two vehicles were added to the

Tailored FreighT was born Five and a halF years ago when Two besT maTes made The decision To sTarT Their own TransporT business To service The needs oF melbourne’s Fresh produce markeTs. and according To iTs Founders, The business has been based on qualiTy raTher Than quanTiTy From The very beginning.

It is much easier for drivers to just push a button rather than have to hand wind landing legs. We split our B-double sets all the time so the Razor legs certainly do get a work out.

fleet, bringing the total number of prime movers to five

and the total number of trailers up to 11.

Tailored Freight now operates nine insulated tautliners

and two refrigerated pantech trailers which all operate

as B-doubles, servicing the Melbourne, Wodonga and

Shepparton districts as well as all the distribution centres

in between. Fruit and vegetable cartage accounts for

approximately 90 per cent of operations, while general

cartage takes up the remaining 10 per cent.

And while there has been several opportunities for

the company to travel interstate, Wayne says that

the company’s fleet is geared to service the needs of

Victoria. “We don’t want to be the biggest but we are

trying to be the best,” he says. “It is easy to get too big

and lose sight of the big picture. We are quite happy to

stay around this sort of number of trucks.”

Every trailer in the fleet has been manufactured by

Freighter, with all but one trailer purchased brand new.

The most recent trailer purchased is a second hand

Freighter trailer that has been completely refurbished.

All vehicles in the fleet operate seven days a week and

the business is open every day of the year except for

Christmas Day and Good Friday. “Horse training is no

different to the fruit and vegetable market, it also runs

seven days a week so the two work hand in hand,”

Wayne says.

Glare Horizontally reflected light such as sunlight or artificial light including car headlamps can create annoying and sometimes dangerous glare. Glare can be extremely dangerous even in foggy or overcast conditions. Kenworth sunglasses cut glare and aid in reducing user eye-strain.

Polarised LensesThese lenses contain a special built-in filter designed to reduce intense reflected light from non-metallic surfaces such as vehicle glass, painted surfaces, roads and water.

Photochromic LensesKenworth sunglasses feature photochromic lenses that darken automatically according to light conditions. They also protect your eyes from 100 percent of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet UVA / UVB radiation.

Anti-reflective treatmentA state-of-the-art coating on the inside of the lenses helps reduce the glare from internal lights caused by light bouncing off the lens to your pupil.

De-centered lenses De-centred lenses are calibrated to balance out the distortion

effect caused by curved lenses. This enables the user to see up or down or straight ahead without experiencing any optical distortion.

Product RangeThe Kenworth range of sunglasses consists of six modern styled lightweight black or tortoise shell frames in a comfortable wrap around shape. The lenses are glass or polycarbonate in a grey or copper colour. Prescription glasses are also available on request.

A TITAN MANUFACTURING PROMOTION

Titan by name, Titan by natureTITAN MANUFACTURING MAY HAVE STARTED OUT AS A TWO PERSON OPERATION, BUT THE COMPANY HAS GROWN IMMENSELY OVER THE PAST DECADE AND NOW PROVIDES A WIDE RANGE OF QUALITY LOW LOADERS THAT ARE IN USE ALL OVER AUSTRALIA.

While Titan Manufacturing was started

only 13 years ago, its experience in

the industry dates back almost four

decades. In fact, the company’s owners,

Doug and Margaret Phillips, started

an earthmoving business with a single

truck in 1972, before launching Titan

Manufacturing 25 years later.

As the earthmoving business became

more and more successful, Doug

and Margaret identified a need for a

construction equipment manufacturing

company to fill a gap in the marketplace.

Titan Manufacturing was launched to

provide purpose built heavy machinery,

repair services and spare parts. This

range has grown to include a wide

range of single, tandem, tri and quad

axle low loaders; dog trailers; drop deck

trailers; and spread deck low loaders

– all custom built to suit its customer’s

requirements. And Titan Manufacturing

lays claim to the fastest delivery times

in the industry, with a build time of

approximately eight weeks from the

date of order on all low loaders, and

three weeks on tag trailers.

In addition, after a recent research

and development trip to Asia,

Doug witnessed a range of modern

technology used to enhance Korean

production lines and has now adopted

the same state-of-the-art computer-

aided drafting and design programs.

Queensland company, Budden

Contractors, purchased a quad axle

spread deck low loader and dolly from

Titan Manufacturing earlier this year, its

first trailer from the manufacturer. Based

in Chinchilla, the company now operates

three low loaders and a range of tippers.

Director of Budden Contractors, Noel

Budden explains, “We are in the

harvesting and haulage business and

also do a great deal of float work for

the various natural resource sites around

Chinchilla which are really booming at

the moment, carting all sorts of odd

shapes and sizes. The trailer is used to

cart a wide variety of machinery, from

graders, compactors and rollers, to

excavators and dump trucks – you name

it, we’ve carried it on the Titan trailer.”

The 11m Titan low loader with dolly was

received and put to work around five

months ago and is capable of carrying

up to 48 tonne. “While we hadn’t

dealt with Titan before, we found

their prices to be very competitive and

their product to be great quality. Titan

gave us the flexibility to order to suit

our requirements so that the finished

product was exactly what we were after.

There were changes to the floor, extra

tie down points added and we were

able to specify the axle configuration

we were after,” says Noel.
