Honeycomb:A honeycomb is a mass of hexagonal wax cells built by honey bees in their nests to contain their larvae and stores of honey and pollen.
HONEYCOMB STRUCTURE
• Honeycomb structures are natural or man-made structures that have the geometry of a honeycomb to allow the minimization of the amount of used material to reach minimal weight and minimal material cost. The geometry of honeycomb structures can vary widely but the common feature of all such structures is an array of hollow cells formed between thin vertical walls.
MATERIAL PROPERTIESStructural Considerations Strength: Honeycomb cores and some facing materials are directional with regard to mechanical properties and care must be taken to ensure that the materials are orientated in the panel to take the best advantage of this attribute. Stiffness: Sandwich structures are frequently used to maximise stiffness at very low weights. Because of the relatively low shear modulu s of most core materials, however, the deflection calculations must allow for shear deflection of the structure in addition to the bending deflections usually considered. Adhesive Performance: The adhesive must rigidly attach the facings to the core material in order for loads to be transmitted from one facing to the other. Suitable adhesives include high modulus, high strength materials available as liquids, pastes or dry films. As a general rule, a low peel-strength, or relatively brittle adhesive should never be used with very light sandwich structures which may be subjected to abuse or damage in storage, handling or service. Economic Considerations: Composite sandwich panels can provide a cost effective solution. Value analysis should include assessment of production and assembly costs; and installation costs including supporting structure
MANUFACTURING OF HONEYCOMB MATERIAL
There are some methods of making honeycomb structure.
• HOBE(Expansion method)
• Corrugated method
• Explosive method
EXPLOSIVE METHOD
• The procedure used to form the honeycomb material by an explosive shock wave is described liquid, preferably water, is used as the medium to transmit the shock wave. The entire assembly of die, sandwich and explosive is mounted under water. In assembly, a flat composite sandwich of face plates and core, or of other assembly including honeycomb material filled with removable supporting solid material is placed over.
CONCLUSION
• The present invention may be practiced in a wide variation of manners within the scope of this speciation and is applicable to the forming of cores and face plates made of metal, paper, plastic and other materials, and upon honeycomb cores lof dierent cell shapes and types. Various materials may be used as the filler material to kill the honeycomb core cells prior to the explosive forming step of this in vention; practically any nonreactive solid material would be operative and those having a low melting point are preferable.
