Before beginning installation procedures, these in-stallation and operating instructions should be stud-ied carefully. The installation and operation should also be in accordance with local regulations and ac-cepted codes of good practice.

1. General descriptionThe MP 1 submersible pump is specially designed for the purging and sampling of contaminated groundwater in boreholes with an internal diameter of at least 50 mm.

The pump is powered via an adjustable converter BMI/MP1 in the 50 to 400 Hz frequency range. At 400 Hz, the pump provides a flow rate of 1 m³/h at 74 metres head.

Note: The pump must always be powered via the BMI/MP1 con-verter, see fig. 1.

Fig. 1

Pump and motor form a complete unit that can easily be disman-tled for cleaning and servicing.

The teflon motor cable is available in different lengths.

1.1 ApplicationsThe MP 1 pump is designed for the purging and sampling of con-taminated water.

The maximum sand content of the water must not exceed 50 g/m³. A larger sand content will reduce the life of the service parts and increase the risk of blocking of the pump.

Water temperature: +1°C to +30°C.

All pump components are made from materials not giving off for-eign matter to the pumped liquid. This ensures that the sample taken is neither influenced nor altered by the pump.

To avoid cleaning the pump and to eliminate the risk of cross-contamination, permanent installation of the pump is recom-mended.

It is possible to use the same pump for sampling in several bore-holes if the risk of cross-contamination can be eliminated.

Note: The MP 1 pump is not designed for the pumping of concen-trated oils, chemicals or explosive liquids.

When pumping liquids with a density or kinematic viscosity higher than that of water, a motor input power higher than the rated power is required. The maximum performance must therefore be reduced by changing the frequency.

Note: When the MP 1 pump is used, the regulations covering the handling of hazardous material and possible local regulations must be observed.

Note: The MP 1 pump is not designed for continuous operation like for instance remedial pumping. Continuous operation may re-duce the life of the pump.

2. Safety

2.1 Safety precautions

2.1.1 Explosion hazard

The pumping system is not approved as explosion-proof. Local authorities and regulations should be consulted if there is any doubt about its suitability for a certain application.

2.1.2 Personal safety equipment

When pumping water containing hazardous material, personal safety equipment must be used.

2.1.3 Warranty

Pumps installed in accordance with these instructions and ac-cepted codes of good practice are covered by the Grundfos war-ranty.

Any constructional change of the pumping system will invalidate the warranty. Grundfos cannot be held responsible for possible consequential damage.

2.1.4 Electrical connection

When lowering/pulling out the pump, take care not to damage the motor cable. The electrical connections should be carried out in accordance with local regulations.

Never fit or remove the motor cable plug from the converter un-less the electricity supply to the converter has been switched off.

2.1.5 Service

Note: Only pumps that can be certified as uncontaminated, i.e. pumps containing no hazardous and/or toxic material, may be re-turned to Grundfos for servicing.

See section 7.2 Service.

3. Transportation and storage

3.1 Delivery

3.1.1 Pump MP 1

After production, the pump has been ultrasonically cleaned and packed into a polyethylene bag. This means that the pump has not been in contact with dirt or detergents after cleaning and it is untouched by persons.

3.1.2 Converter BMI/MP1

Note: The converter should not be exposed to unnecessary shocks and should be handled like sensitive electronic equip-ment.

3.2 StorageThe pumping system should be stored in a clean and dry area.

3.2.1 Pump MP 1

Storage temperature: –20°C to +50°C.

If the pump has to be stored after use, it must be cleaned thor-oughly before storing. See section 7. Maintenance and service.

3.2.2 Converter BMI/MP1

The converter should be stored in a clean and dry area.

Storage temperature: 0°C to +50°C.

4. Installation

4.1 AssemblyThe pump can be installed either horizontally or vertically. The pump discharge port should never fall below the horizontal plane, see fig. 5.

Fig. 5

During operation, the pump must always be completely sub-merged in the liquid.

The pump performance is controlled by changing the frequency. The installation of a valve in the discharge pipe is unnecessary and with regard to the water sample directly inappropriate. If a valve has been installed anyway, make sure that the pump is only operated against a closed valve for a very short period. Otherwise the heat generated will cause the pump to stop.

If a non-return valve is installed in the discharge pipe, it must be installed at least 0.5 metre above the pump. This is necessary to ensure that the air in the pump is compressed so much that the pump contains water when it is being submerged.

4.2 Borehole diameterThe inside diameter of the sampling borehole must be at least 50 mm. At the first sampling, it is recommended to check the borehole for clearance by means of a calibration punch. If the borehole diameter is larger than 80 mm, the pump can be fitted in a flow sleeve to prevent unintended pump cut-outs, see fig. 6.

Fig. 6

During handling, operation, storage and transporta-tion, the environmental regulations covering the han-dling of hazardous material must be observed.

When the pump is taken out of operation, care must be taken to ensure that the pump contains no hazard-ous material that might be injurious to human health or to the environment.

The motor is factory-filled with liquid (approx. 25 ml demineralised water). During operation, this liquid is wholly or partly replaced by the contaminated water. Therefore, there is a potential risk of contamination and poisoning.

The water delivered by the pump may be contami-nated and/or toxic. The regulations covering the han-dling of hazardous material must therefore be ob-served.

7

4.3 Water levelThe dynamic water level (depth to the water level in the borehole during operation) must not exceed 80 metres.

4.4 Checking of liquid in motorThe level of the liquid in the motor should be checked before the pump is installed.

1. Place the pump and motor in a vertical position with the dis-charge port pointing downwards (i.e. the bottom of the motor is uppermost) and remove the filling screw, see fig. 7.

Fig. 7

2. If the water stands up to the edge of the threaded hole, no fill-ing is required. If not, fill demineralised water into the motor. To enable all air to escape, insert your finger in the pump dis-charge port and lift the shaft a few times. Recheck the liquid level.

3. Replace and tighten the filling screw.

The pump is now ready for installation.

4.5 Pipe connectionPump discharge port: Rp ¾.

A pipe or a hose can be connected to the pump.

Whenever a hose is fitted, a compression coupling must be used, see fig. 8.

Tighten the union nut using fingers only and then give it 1¼ turns by means of a tool.

Fig. 8

If PTFE (teflon) pipes or hoses or unarmoured hoses are used, a stainless steel straining wire is required for lowering and lifting the pump.

The straining wire is secured to the pump by means of a wire holder, see fig. 9.

Fig. 9

Spiral flex or cable clips are used for fitting the cable and the straining wire (if fitted) to the riser pipe/hose. The spiral flex or ca-ble clips should be fitted every 1 to 3 metres, see fig. 10.

Fig. 10

4.6 Lowering the pumpLower the pump into the borehole, taking care not to damage the motor cable.

Note: Do not lower or lift the pump by means of the motor cable.

4.7 Installation depthDuring operation, the pump and motor must be completely sub-merged to ensure the necessary lubrication of the shaft seal and cooling of the motor.

If the pump pumps more water that the borehole can yield, there is a risk that the water level falls below the level of the pump inlet and that air is therefore sucked into the pump.

Note: Long time of operation with water containing air may dam-age the pump and cause insufficient cooling of the motor.

If a non-return valve is installed in the discharge pipe, it must be installed at least 0.5 metre above the pump. This is necessary to ensure that the air in the pump is compressed so much that the pump contains water when it is being submerged.

1. Fit the clamp (1) in the cover (2).

2. Fit the clamp (3) in the cover (2).

3. Assemble the stand (4).

4. Fit the mounting plate (5) to the stand (4) by means of the screws and nuts (6).

5. Fit the cover (2) to the mounting plate (5) by means of the screws (7) in the clamp (3).

6. Push up the cover (2).

7. Fit the converter (8) to the mounting plate (4) by means of the screws and nuts (9).

8. Fit the clamp (1) in the mounting plate (5) and fit the lock washers (10).

Fig. 11

5. Electrical connection

5.1 Connection of converterBy means of the converter the frequency can be continuously ad-justed from approx. 50 to approx. 400 Hz.

The electrical connection of the converter should be carried out in accordance with local regulations and standards.

If the pump is connected to an electric installation where an earth leakage circuit breaker (ELCB) is used as additional protection, this circuit breaker must trip out when earth fault currents with DC content (pulsating DC) occur. The earth leakage circuit breaker must be marked with the sym-bol shown: .

Note: The portable BMI/MP1 sampling unit is primarily designed for generator operation. If the unit is connected to the mains sup-ply, local regulations dealing with radio interference suppression must be observed. It is recommended to install a radio noise filter between the BMI/MP1 converter and the supply mains.

Before the BMI/MP1 converter is connected, it must be checked that the supply voltage lies within the following range: 1 x 220-240 V –15%/+10%, 50/60 Hz, PE.

When a generator is used, it is particularly important to check that the voltage lies within the specified range.

Procedure for starting generator operation:

1. Connect the MP 1 pump, BMI/MP1 converter (position Off), generator (switched off) and switch between generator and converter (position Off).

2. Start the generator. When the generator is operating steadily, change the switch between generator and converter to posi-tion “On”.

3. Push the on/off switch on the converter into position “start”. The pump starts.

Page 9: MP 1 - PROMSIS.COMpromsis.com/pdf/mp1.pdf · Declaration of Conformity We GRUNDFOS declare under our sole responsibility that the products MP 1, to which this declaration relates,

9

Procedure for stopping generator operation:

1. Push the on/off switch on the converter into position “stop”. The pump stops.

2. Change the switch between generator and converter to posi-tion “Off”.

3. Stop the generator.

The display in the converter front cover shows the actual operat-ing frequency or a possible fault condition, see fig. 12.

Fig. 12

The converter incorporates motor protection which is factory-ad-justed to the pump. Consequently, the pump requires no addi-tional overload or short-circuit protection.

5.2 Connection of pumpThe motor cable from the pump is connected at the bottom of the converter.

Fig. 13

If either the converter plug or the motor cable plug differs from the plugs shown in fig. 13, connect one of the adapter cables below.

Product numbers:

On delivery, the direction of rotation of the pump is correct. Con-sequently, it is not necessary to check the direction of rotation.

6. Start-up and operation

6.1 Start-upWhen the pump has been installed and connected to the con-verter, switch on the electricity supply. The display shows “0”.

When starting up for the first time, leave the converter in this con-dition for 15 minutes. If it has been stored for more than six months, this procedure is also required. This is necessary to charge the built-in filter capacitors.

During start-up, the pump must always be completely submerged.

Start the pump by means of the on/off switch on the converter front cover. The required pump performance can be set by means of the speed regulator, see fig. 14. The display will show the fre-quency and consequently the pump performance.

Fig. 14

During start-up, the setting of the speed regulator is of minor im-portance. The regulator may be turned quickly as the acceleration and deceleration times are controlled by the converter. Note: The speed regulator must be given 10 turns to adjust the speed from minimum to maximum.

The MP 1 pump is not designed for continuous operation like for instance remedial pumping. Continuous operation may reduce the life of the pump.

6.2 Operation

6.2.1 Setting of pump performance

Because of the time delay when changing the pump performance, it may be difficult to set the required pump performance. The speed regulator should therefore be turned a little at a time so that the pump performance can be set accordingly.

6.2.2 Minimum flow

To ensure the necessary cooling of the motor, the pump should never be set so low that it gives no water.

If the flow rate suddenly falls, the reason might be that the pump is pumping more water than the borehole can yield. The pump performance must immediately be reduced or the pump must be stopped to avoid damage to the pump.

6.2.3 Frozen pump

If the liquid in the pump is frozen so that the pump cannot rotate, lower it into water and start it at minimum performance (approx. 50 Hz). The pump will now - without running - slowly thaw, and af-ter about 10 minutes it is ready for operation.

6.2.4 Stop

After use, switch off the converter by means of the on/off switch on the front cover. Then switch off the electricity supply before the motor cable is removed.

7. Maintenance and service

7.1 MaintenanceIf the pump is used alternately in several boreholes, it must be decontaminated before every sampling event or before possible storing.

Clean the pump, cable, straining wire, etc. on the outside. Then dismantle the pump. Thoroughly clean the pump components be-fore reassembling the pump. See section 8. Dismantling and as-sembly.

As the demineralised water (approx. 25 ml) in the motor may have been wholly or partly replaced by the contaminated water, it is necessary to refill the motor with demineralised water. See sec-tion 4.4 Checking of liquid in motor.

For the replacement of wearing parts including impellers, see fig. 15, a service kit (product number 12 50 61) is available. The kit includes two complete pump stages. Replace the wearing parts including impellers as shown in section 8. Dismantling and assembly.

In addition, a service kit (product number 1A 50 50) is available. This kit includes wearing parts for two pumps, i.e. 4 washers, pos. 285, and 4 seals, pos. 207, see fig. 15.

Fig. 15

The rinsing water from the decontamination and the motor liquid must be collected and disposed of in accordance with local regu-lations.

7.2 ServiceThe MP 1 pump is specially designed for the purging and sam-pling of contaminated and/or toxic groundwater. As a precaution, Grundfos cannot undertake to service the MP 1 pump.

Only pumps that can be certified as uncontaminated, i.e. pumps containing no hazardous and/or toxic material, may be returned to Grundfos for servicing.

To prevent injury to the health of persons involved and to the en-vironment, a document certifying that the pump is clean is re-quired.

Grundfos must receive this certificate before the product. Otherwise Grundfos will refuse to accept the product for servic-ing. Possible costs of returning the product are paid by the cus-tomer.

If the converter is defective, please contact your nearest Grund-fos distributor.

8.4 Assembling the pumpProcedure (see fig. 22):

1. Fit the seal (pos. 207) to the intermediate ring (pos. 230). The dogs of the intermediate ring must engage with the seal.

2. Position the intermediate ring and the seal on the motor with suction interconnector (pos. 1).

3. Fit the impeller (pos. 213) to the shaft and push it against the seal (pos. 207). The skirt of the impeller must fit into the hole of the seal.

4. Fit the washer (pos. 285) to the impeller.

5. Fit the guide vanes (pos. 232) to the intermediate ring.

Fig. 22

6. Repeat the procedure with seal, intermediate ring, impeller, washer and guide vanes.

7. Push the pump housing (pos. 201a) over the wearing parts in-cluding impellers (pos. 200) and screw it on the suction inter-connector on the motor (pos. 1), see fig. 17.

8. Position the cable along the pump housing (in the recess).

9. Push the strainer (pos. 215) over the pump housing and press it against the motor. Turn the strainer to the right so that the hole of the strainer and that of the pump housing are in the same position.

10. Fit and tighten the screw (pos. 215a).

9. Faults, causes and remedy

9.1 Restarting after faultIf the converter has cut out because of one of the faults shown in section 9.2, the converter must be reset before the pump can be restarted. Push the on/off switch on the converter into position “stop”. Then the display indication will change from “–” in one of the fields into “0”. The pump is now ready for restarting. See sec-tion 6.1 Start-up.

9.2 Converter fault indications

If the motor, motor cable, converter or converter cable is defective, please contact your nearest Grundfos distributor.

10. DisposalDisposal of this product or parts of it must be carried out accord-ing to the following guidelines:

1. Use the local public or private waste collection service.

2. In case such waste collection service does not exist or cannot handle the materials used in the product, please deliver the product or any hazardous materials form it to your nearest Grundfos company or service workshop.

Fault Cause Remedy

OVERCURRENT

a) Current consumption too high.MP 1 is pumping a liquid with too high density.

Reduce the frequency.

b) Motor cable defective. Check the motor cable and MP 1 with a megohmmeter. The insulation resistance must be higher than 0.5 MŸ at 1000 V.Note: When measuring the resistance, the motor cable plug must be disconnected from BMI/MP1.

c) Internal converter fault. Have the converter repaired.

NO CURRENTa) Motor cable not connected to converter. Connect and lock the plug.

b) MP 1 thermally cut out due to excess motor temperature.

Wait until the MP 1 has cooled sufficiently. Reset the converter and start the pump.

OVERLOADa) Converter thermally overloaded. Check that the converter is placed in a sufficiently cool

place with ample ventilation.

b) Converter overloaded. Reduce the converter load.

HIGH VOLTAGEa) Supply voltage to BMI/MP1 too high. Reset the converter. If it cuts out again, reduce the volt-

age, see section 1.2 Technical data.

LOW VOLTAGEa) Supply voltage to BMI/MP1 too low. Reset the converter. If it cuts out again, increase the

voltage, see section 1.2 Technical data.

Subject to alterations.
