A new year undoubtedly brings to mind the idea of “starting over,” resolutions, fresh starts. In

all honesty, I’m not much of a fan of these resolutions - the mere thought of coming up with yet another

list of stuff to do sends me into a near-panic, generally ending with empty wine glasses or some other

unnecessary overindulgence.

Irregardless of my stymied attempts (or absolute avoidance) to this annual ritual, I find myself

somewhat captivated by what really drives so many of us to resolve - even in the most informal manner -

to take a step in some different direction at the beginning of each year. It seems to me that it’s all about

a desire for something more somewhere unfulfilled that nags at us, begging for attention. I’m not talking

about a fitter body or a larger bank account either. For the most part, we want these things but it’s out

of a belief that these things will bring us a sense of joy, completion, accomplishment and so. When we

look closely, we realize that these states of being (bliss, success, etc) are what we truly desire and it is

what is driving us to accomplish “more.“

What is it then that you truly desire? Through the years I’ve come to see how I have some

deep desires that are highly unique and wholly beautiful. We all have these and we are often merciless

in criticizing ourselves for many of the things we want. We tell ourselves all kinds of garbage. “I don’t

deserve it.” “I’m not ready just yet.” “It’s not in the stars for me.” “I just don’t have the skills/tools/

knowledge to attain it.” Nevertheless, some of these desires stay with us daily, even yearly, and they

drive us towards something more.

Therein lies the beauty of our desires. When we stop to look at them as steps in our natural

evolution, when we begin to have just a little faith in our selves as the true goddesses we are, then we

are able to align with whatever it is we want and allow the necessary experiences and lessons to unfold.

There is no need for judging and denying ourselves. When we are tapped into our true desires, our

advancement and success is inevitable.

I invite you this month to look at your desires, not with fear, overwhelm or judgment, but rather

just view them as the next step in your personal evolution. Without being upset because you want more

money, a better job or a better relationship, I ask that you contemplate the beauty of our very design.

Realize that those desires are there only because success and improvement is your natural tendency.

Most of all, I hope you fully enjoy yourself as you go along your own personal journey.

All the best in the year to come,Marta ViciedoExecutive Editor

The simple answer is Erin Gabrielle Heit but here’s the answer you really want to know…Ever since I was a young girl I knew I had to be in business. I graduated with a Business Degree, finishing my last semester studying in nine countries, where I conducted field marketing and business assignments. Immediately after my return I was hired as the tenth employee at Energy Brands, creator of Glacéau Vitaminwater, heading up their Marketing Communications Department. After that huge success I was swept into another start up company called FUZE Beverages. I was the first person to head their Marketing Department. Now with two amazing and extremely monumental accomplishments, I took my experiences south to Florida. I joined some local beverage companies and helped take them to the next level. Then I leveraged all of my success and was able to start my own profitable consulting firm. Most recently, a brill iant businessman, whom I witnessed build an extremely lucrative enterprise, convinced me to join his team of investors and begin my latest venture, evaluating companies to invest in and be a part of a larger economical opportunity. So, readers stay tuned… you will be part of this latest ride. If you have any further questions about me, or any deals for me to evaluate, email [email protected].

One of Erin’s pet peeves is when someone tells her they will be there to pick her up in 10 minutes but don’t show up for 30.

Desire is a tricky feeling. On one side you may feel alive and awakened when you desire something. But then on the other hand, you may feel void of something, somehow empty if you desire something. So, what do you do?

Well, I can tell you at one point of my life all of my ‘desire’ was focused on making money. I believed that if I made money, then all my problems would be resolved. My strong want for money was a result of my childhood which was made up of financial struggle, challenges and the need to survive. Plus, I simply like nice things. I deliberately formed myself to be a woman who was determined to make money.

I entered into the working world and started to make money. I noticed that making that money was not even comparable to the way I felt on a day to day basis, contributing to a larger vision. I started to realize, that yes making money was still something I wanted to do, but it slowly wasn’t remaining the only thing that I defined myself to be. I liked this self evolution and growth. It empowered me to feel good in all areas of my life where I became less of a slave to “desiring” money and there was more of a motivation factor to just enjoy and appreciate my capability on a day to day basis. The interesting point is when I began to relinquish the solitaire desire for making money, I still had money coming my way.

Today, I am in the midst of trying to eliminate all desiring from my life, which, will probably take me years to conquer, but I have learned it is more peaceful when you don’t ‘desire” and you just let things come to you naturally.

For the sake of this article I want to emphasize the importance to minimize your “desire” for money and focus more on what makes you feel good day to day while maintaining that zest we all have. We can still remain driven and feel good for accomplishments, but if you try to detach from the “money” aspect you may become able to just breathe while you are out there doing your thing. It is important to notice and recognize what you are capable of doing and enjoy that aspect. Many people rush through the acts and the games just to get to the money, but they are the ones who are missing out on the FULL EXPERIENCE of being a driven money making machine.

When the desire for money and the attachment to things and status take over you, you are not DRIVING anymore.

It comes from deep within; its ways are mysterious and powerful.

Sometimes, it appears gradually, like bubbles from an abyss rising

delicately to the surface. We are only faintly aware of it. As we

awaken, we feel drawn to certain people, pursuits, and places. This

desire, this passion gently expands our awareness of ourselves and

the world. Yet, other times, it comes quickly…a flash of lightning in

a desert storm…falling in love at first sight. Suddenly, our life twists

in a different direction toward this new desire.

We have often been taught that desire and passion should be

repressed. As children, we learn the old paradigm that we have to

be practical and work hard. Dreams are nice to think about, but they

are not “reality.” We are stifled by this Puritanical mindset that has

lingered hundreds of years too long. But the truth is this. Desire

is the fuel that lights our soul on fire with inspiration and purpose.

Without passion, there would be no reason for living.

At the same time, remember to maintain balance. If you are blindly

ruled by your desires, your life may become like a rebellious wild

stallion galloping out of control. Learn to listen to the message of

your passions while taming them at the same time.

When you acknowledge your desires, you are connecting with your

true self. Your passions are the Voice of your Intuition; they reveal

powerful messages to inform and guide you. As long as your higher

Compass of the Heart

self is holding the reins of discernment, you can access the clarity and

insight to steer your life in the direction that will bring you the most

joy and fulfillment.

While life may feel uncertain and mysterious at times, we have been

blessed with an internal navigating system. We have our own compass,

the compass of our heart. When things seem beyond our control,

when we don’t know what direction to go in, the one thing we can

trust is our heart. According to the authors of The Passion Test, Janet

and Chris Attwood, “your love and God’s will for your life are one and

the same.” When you are following what you love, you are living your

destiny and your purpose on this earth.

If you aren’t clear on your passions, commit to spending time alone

to discover the incredible being that you are. Give yourself a mental

vacation for at least one day with no errands, schedules, or to do

lists. During this day, allow yourself the freedom to do whatever

you feel like doing every moment. Experience how liberating this

feels. Discover what delights you. Notice how you feel when you are

engaged in these activities. That sense of expansion and fulfillment is a

confirmation that you are being true to yourself. You are in alignment.

Start to become more aware of every moment in your life. Choose in

favor of the activities and people that energize and uplift you. As you

learn to trust yourself more, clarity will illuminate your path. Your life

will unfold with a sense of ease, joy, and adventure.

If you are ready to start living a fulfilling life, Patricia Beck is offering a complimentary phone session of The Passion Test to help you gain Clarity, Inspiration, and Purpose for the New Year. Learn the powerful and proven system for creating a life of meaning and success. Call her and mention Moxxi to receive a consultation valued at $85. (Valid until

WHO: Carmen OrdonezWHAT: Viva Fashion Blog (www.vivafashionblog.com), CreatorWHERE: Born in NY, has lived most of her life in Miami.WHEN: Began Viva Fashion Blog in 2008.WHY: Studied Broadcast Journalism following the two things she enjoys: interviewing others and journalism. Her fashion blog allows her to combine these two elements into something she truly loves.MOXXI MOMENT: Having recently taken a position as a producer for a TV station, Carmen kept sight of her original goal of becoming a reporter. Part of her job was to coordinate interviews for other reporters so when the day came that one of them could not make it to an important interview, Carmen knew she had to make it work. “I asked the Executive Producer of the show if she wanted me to cover the story. She said yes and I was ecstatic!” With no time to prepare, Carmen had to improvise. The results of her stepping up: A great interview that got aired on TV and the Executive Producer liked her work so much, she was offered a weekly segment on the show. “That one moment opened many doors.”

When we asked Carmen what she recently discovered about herself, she didn’t skip a beat: “I’ve learned that I ultimately have to do something I love and am really passionate about. Sometimes people pick careers and just focus on the money aspect, which is important too. But ultimately doing something you love brings you the most happiness.” One thing Carmen certainly loves is fashion and when she intersected that with her fondness for journalism, Viva Fashion Blog was born. Targeting fashionistas interested in bargain finds, trends and up-and-coming designers, Carmen’s blog also features interviews with celebs, information on fashion events going on in Miami and the latest and greatest in boutique finds throughout the city. It doesn’t end here. The almost-native Miamian has her eye on expanding her blog into a full fledged website while working as a style contributor for TV shows. It quickly becomes apparent that we will be seeing much more of Ms. Ordonez in the near future. So what does this totally Moxxi-fied lady do to kick back? She loves spending time with her husband and family, and yes, blogging. One last note that couldn’t be left out: when asked to tell us about one thing she wished everyone would know about her, The fairly petite Carmen grins, “I can eat a large size pepperoni pizza by myself!”

This month we celebrate the life of one of history ’s most extraordinary individuals whose influence is still seen today. In relation to women, Dr.

King played a pivotal role in inspiring and influencing women By Nadia Myrthil

IN HONOR OF MARTIN

LUTHER KING JR.

MOXXI MOMENTS

Septima Poinsette Clark born in Charleston, SC., is

often called the “queen mother” of civil rights because her

life’s work for equal education and civil rights. Clark was

an educator and an activist for the National Association for

the Advancement of Colored People decades before the

nation’s attention turned to racial equality. She has a non-

profit organization in her name that is designated to help

men of the Prince George’s County, Maryland Penal System

transition from prison to civil life.

1898

Fannie Lou Hamer was a Mississippi sharecropper.

Hamer was beaten and jailed in 1962 for trying to register

to vote. After that experience she co-founded the

Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party for the Student

Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and later became

the Vice-Chair of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic

party. Her fervent belief in the Biblical righteousness of

her convictions fueled her to give a fiery speech at the

1964 Democratic National Convention.

1917

Desire means a strong feeling of wanting something to happen. In life we walk around and we see the things we want, the things we need, the things we desire. Oh how we desire! We want all types of things, be they materialistic, simplistic or pragmatic. As a society I know we all can agree that we desire change on some level. With a desire in someone manifested, without inspiration limited or constricted, the possibilities are endless.

It is often said that your environment plays an important role in shaping someone as a person. Looking back on all the people who went against the grain for the betterment of their community, they all had something in common: Inspiration. Whether the source of the inspiration was good or evil, a sudden brilliance was instilled and this brilliance gave birth to DESIRE, most of often a desire for progress. These desires have been so strong and resilient that from that spark, the world continues to experience change. This past Presidential campaign was about change, with both Democrats and Republican speaking of it from different standpoints. However, I remember when going against the grain of what was normal then, injustice now, was not well received. This is the inspiration that brought Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to the forefront of the Civil Rights movement.

Napoleon Hill said, “Desire is the starting point of all achievement, not a hope, not a wish, but a keen pulsating desire which transcends everything.” Observed on the third Monday of January each year we pay homage to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for more reasons than one but most importantly for allowing inspiration and the desire of change to focus his vision on seeing unity in the world. Inspired by Howard Thurman and Gandhi, King utilized the concepts of nonviolent activism and unity and equality for everyone as innate in the moral structure of the universe.

cont’d on page 13

Page 13: Moxxi Magazine - Jan 09

King’s main legacy was to secure progress on civil rights in the United States and is considered the most poignant human rights activist. On an international scale, King’s legacy had influences on the Black Consciousness Movement and Civil Rights Movement in South Africa. His passion to see the change the world needed in his community and afar led to many reforms that may have had small input but great output. For example, the day after King was assassinated a schoolteacher by the name of Jane Elliott conducted her first “Blue Eyes/Brown Eyes” exercise. She was an elementary school teacher in Riceville, Iowa. The main reason for the exercise was to help everyone realize and understand how King’s death related to racism. More and more as the ripple of shock went across the world’s waters of Kings death, more and more leaders, reformers, and activist were influenced to pick up where he left off. In every field of human endeavors, those who were influenced were utilizing their aptitude to carry on the legacy in their own right. From Shamima Shaikh to Alice Walker and to Maya Angelou they were inspired with King’s legacy and instiled with desire. Desires to make apparent what the world either ignored or did not readily see.

Ghandi said “we must be the change that we want to see in the world.” Our desires most often shape our convictions filling us with the possibilities to take the first step. King once said “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” Well in response to that I say that faith is the substance of things desired and the evidence of things not yet seen. With those many tools, faith, inspiration, and desire all manifested, we can be the change that we want to see in the world.

Coretta Scott King was born in Heiberger,

Alabama. She become an international emblem of

the civil rights revolution with great influence and

encouragement from her husband Dr. Martin Luther

King, Jr. She carried on his legacy long after he died

and on an international scale advocated for social and

political justice in South Africa, ranging from women’s

rights to struggle against apartheid in South Africa.

1927

Vivian Malone Jones, was born in Mobile,

Alabama on July 15, 1942. In 1963, Jones defied

segregationist Alabama Gov. George C. Wallace

when she and her friend Hood decided to enroll

in the University of Alabama. Two years later she

graduated with a B.A. in Business Management

and later worked in the civil rights division of the

As I lace up my sneakers to get on this wicked machine tonight, I contemplate the topic of

desire and can’t help but think, I have no desire to run OR think! Okay, but now I’m just whining. Truth of the matter is, this machine and I have a date and any other day of the week, I could go on for hours about desires (though that’s pretty much me and any topic). For some reason though, tonight I’m having difficulty tapping into this usually entertaining theme.

It’s ironic that I’m having difficulty with this particular subject since this is usually the time when all we have is a laundry list of desires for the new year. I believe the usual suspects in this scenario are: lose weight, quit smoking, change jobs, change boyfriends/girlfriends (or both if that’s your case), run that marathon, become more involved in the community, blah, blah, blah. Did I miss anything? If I did, here’s a nice fill-in-the-blank for you _______. I know most people call these resolutions, but let’s be honest, at the end of the day they’re all born as desires. Resolutions are what you tell yourself you’re going to do but desires are resolutions in their virgin state.

Our desires for a more fulfilling existence instigate our resolutions. I realize many people tend to

associate desire within a more passionate context, but desire takes on many forms. Right now, my desire is for time to move quickly as I pant my way through this workout. After this workout, my desire will consist of a shower and a side of pizza (okay, that may be more gorging than desire). The great thing about desires is that they are like life cocktails. They contain a shot of motivation, a jigger of hope, a dash of passion and an ounce of awareness. So I figure it only makes sense that of all the cocktails we ingest at the stroke of midnight to welcome the new year, the desire cocktail is inevitable to consume.

The only problem with my cocktail this year, at this particular moment, is that I’m not quite sure what brands I want to use for these ingredients. Yes, I want hope, but in what form? Is hope this year going to consist of being more positive or overlooking flaws? We all think we know what we want, but do we really take the time to elaborate on our desires to help guarantee results? For example, no institution (and yes, I think they can aptly be referred to as institutions) thrives more this time of year than the almighty health club. January is

their time to shine. They bank on the overindulgent downward spiral that starts mid-October and plummets in December. As soon as that clock strikes midnight on December 31st, we are all ready to commit to working out, and we’ll be damned if we don’t do it this year! However, do we join the gym because of our desire to work out? Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve heard myths of people in far away lands that enjoy working out, but the truth is that people who make this resolve after months of sugar indulgence and a vat of vodka tonic, don’t do it because of a desire to wake up at 5:00 am. They do it because of a desire for something more.

Now I would love to tell you this is the part where I break it all down and tell you what my actual desires are and what yours may be, but I don’t have those answers for you, or for myself. So now you’re thinking, she made me read all this and she has no idea what she wants. Well, unfortunately, you’re half correct. It’s not that I can’t rattle off the

top of my head what I desire in life, because we can all do that (and I’ve proven on more than one occasion my proficiency at being verbose, aka: motor mouth). But I think what’s important is something I actually had a hard time understanding myself until I wrote it down. It’s okay not to be sure what your desires are and it’s okay to question the deeper reasons why we have them. It’s more important to have a better understanding of where your desires come from in order to give them a fighting chance. Realize that exercise may actually be about living longer and having better sex (I had to include it somehow in an article about desire), changing jobs may be about feeling like you’re making a difference, and giving to a cause may be about setting an example.

Everyone has desires. Some are blatant, others are secret (forbidden sounds raunchy, but who am I to judge) and many are multidimensional. With this new year offering us the mythical clean slate, take this time to examine all your desires (no matter how familiar they are to you) to ensure they are still your desires at the end of this year and not just recycled unsuccessful resolutions. Happy New Year!

Words of Wisdom: There is no such thing as a woman with too many shoes, just a home with limited closet space.

It’s more important to have a better understanding of where your desires come from in order to give them a fighting chance.

THE ABC’s OF GOAL SETTINGby Rowena Soriano

YO U KN O W YO U WA N T IT, SO HO W AR E YO U GO I N G TO GE T IT?

If you’re ready to go for it and get what you want, no matter what it is, make the decision to change and commit to it now. First of all

you must stop making excuses and rationalizing why you can’t do it. Is it possible that someone like you with all of the challenges and

pressures you have in your life has the ability to change? “YES” of course it is! Will it require effort and possibly sacrifice? Yes, but I do

not know of any high level of achievement or greatness that was reached without sacrifice. So make change a priority and take the first

step towards your potential greatness - Commit to change and quit making excuses!

Take Action. Do something, anything to get you started today. This is important – YOU MUST TAKE ACTION NOW!! No matter

what your goal, a better education, relationship, health, happiness, or more money, etc… it all is possible and achievable! Pick up the

phone and make an appointment, buy a book, schedule a class, go workout. Tell people about your new goal. Better yet, choose a

partner to do it with (it is very important in choosing a partner that you do not choose a partner that contributes to your failure by being

unreliable, negative or constantly makes excuses - the next paragraph will tell you why). Just do one of these things but do it now!!

Surround yourself with the tools, things and people that will help you achieve your goals. This is very important because what you

surround yourself with has a direct influence on your life (The old saying is completely true “You become who you surround yourself

with”). If for example fitness is your goal, surround yourself with fit, healthy, active people that will influence you in a positive way. Don’t

be upset if you can’t keep up with them or you’re not as strong. Use these emotions as fuel to help motivate you. Just understand that

as long as you commit yourself to achieving your goals you are constantly going to improve.

Stay committed, never give up. Without constant positive stimulation our bodies, health, brains, relationships or anything else for that

matter are deteriorating and dying every day. Nothing stays the same unless it is maintained and nothing gets better unless we put a

constant and committed effort into making it better.

So start now, start today. You completely have the power to better your life!

She became a certified yoga instructor which then led her to create Yogathletics - a form of yoga designed specifically for athletes.

Learning to embrace life’s difficulties and hurtles and translating them into opportunities for growth is one of Cat’s most important recent realizations. Following a life long passion for health and fitness, Cat dedicates almost the entirety of her day to opening as many minds as she can to the idea of yoga and how it can help us all achieve a more balance life. With the creation of Yogathletics, Cat is taking that vision one step further by helping athletes perform at their peak as they integrate the principles of yogic postures into their routine. She has brought her training principles to the Green Monkey Center in South Miami, which also focuses on creating balanced, healthy lifestyles. As we start the New Year, don’t forget that death is not far off. That’s the beauty of this fragile little egg we call life; you could go at any moment. More importantly, I could go at

any moment, then who would tell you what to read? Easy. I want you to think of Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill as that friend with the really great taste in literature, the friend who places books in your hand that you probably wouldn’t have looked at twice, the friend who seems to pick only gems.

The idea of publisher loyalty has become a joke in the industry, so I was surprised that many of my favorites from the last couple years have come from this little publisher in North Carolina. Books I’ve enjoyed, that have taken me completely from my surroundings. Books which surprised me in ways the author earned, rather than gimmicks. Books I have recommended wholeheartedly, again and again.

How loyal am I? A few months back, I rolled my eyes over a novel in which Jesus runs for president. Then I turned the book on its side and saw that Rolach Merullo’s American Savior ($24.95) is an Algonquin book. I took it home. I haven’t gotten to American Savior yet, but one of my coworker’s has been singing its praises for weeks now. Between Algonquin’s track record and Nicole’s word, I’d say you’re safe picking it up.

On the other hand, I have read these. In this order.

Brock Clarke’s An Arsonist’s Guide to Writer’s Homes in New England (Algonquin, $13.95) just came out in paperback. Clarke creates “arsonist” Sam Pulsifier with the precision of a micro-surgeon, which gives the book its heart and soul. Whether browsing a bookstore or waiting in a cold van, Sam’s internal monologues are rich and pitch-perfect. That Sam is in the middle of a great story doesn’t hurt, either.

JUNKIE

Aaron Curtis is a book buyer at Books & Books. He solemnly swears Algonquin offered him no compensation

for this article . . .but he wouldn’t turn it down.

Hillary Jordon’s mighty Mudbound (Algonquin, $22.95) begins thusly:

When I think of the farm, I think of mud. Limning my husband’s fingernails and encrusting the children’s knees and hair. Sucking at my feet like a greedy newborn on the breast. Marching in boot-shaped patches across the plank floors of the house. There was no defeating it. The mud coated everything. I dreamed in brown.

If that doesn’t make you want to pick the book up, I have no hope for you. Jordan’s beautiful prose continues throughout. Be prepared to go to some dark places, but also to be dazzled (yes, dazzled) by a debut as satisfying as it is stark.

When a book interweaves a fantastic story that may-or-may-not-wink-wink have bearing on a second, real-world plot, one of two things usually happens. The lifeless reality the author creates serves only as filler for the fun, otherworldly stuff, and you find yourself bored, waiting for the portion of the book you actually enjoy to resume. Or when the two worlds meet (or “collide,” as they often seem to do), the resolution is completely unsatisfying. Both plots in Jack O’Connell’s fifth book, The Resurrectionist (Algonquin, $24.95), are better than the other, and the resolution is downright masterful.

In a rare bit of publicity for this little house, you may have seen Deborah Copaken Kogan pushing Between Here and April (Algonquin, $22.95) on the Today show. That women sacrifice much to their children is a given, the crime is how often boyfriends, husbands, and employers leave them on their own. Between Here and April explores the results, proving that writing one’s personal demons can make a great story. I’m not saying Deborah Copaken Kogan is her narrator, but having put aside a successful career as a photojournalist (chronicled in the memoir she insists she didn’t title Shutterbabe [Random House $13.95]) to raise three children, she knows what she writes. Copaken Kogan does not waste time with superficial emotions; she writes with the strength of a desperate hug, or a fierce punch.

You may not know Algonquin as a publisher, but you probably know their hit. Algonquin published Sara Gruen’s stellar third novel, Water for Elephants ($13.95), in 2006. Harper Collins, the fourth-largest publisher in the US with 2007 sales of $1.3 billion, had published Gruen’s first two novels.

Publishers have frontlist titles each season, household names like James Patterson or Nora Roberts and a few new hopefuls the publisher gambles on. Frontlist takes the bulk of the ad dollars. Midlist authors, either untested or with a modest following, come second. At Harper, Sara Gruen was a midlist author. She debuted quietly, performed quietly, and Harper quietly didn’t renew her contract. Another victim of current publishing standards, push hard for a few hits, and let natural selection sort out the rest. I’m interested to see whether the current shakedowns at all the major publishers, the direct result of a flailing economy, will lead the big houses to review their practices. Maybe nurture careers instead of searching for hits. Anyway.

Water for Elephants was – is – Sara Gruen’s hit novel. When she came to Books & Books on Tuesday, July 25th 2006, I wanted to know if she’d grown as a writer, or if a new publisher had made the difference. I asked her if she would have broken out if she’d stayed at Harper. “No way,” Gruen answered. “It would have been, throw eight hundred books at the wall, see what sticks.”

Algonquin, publishing a relatively modest 20-25 fiction titles each year, spreading their revenue more evenly and wisely, made Sara Gruen into a name author.

But big publishers are no different than small publishers when it comes to overhead. Billions in sales look impressive, but publishing margins are almost nil. Big publishers need a Harry Potter or a Da Vinci Code to keep their heads above water, and Algonquin needs a Sara Gruen to keep their roster of high-talent, low-profile authors in print. It’s a calling for them, and a mission.

Which is why it saddens me Sara Gruen chose the third-largest publisher in the world, Random House, for her fourth book. Algonquin made her a #1 bestseller. Now she’s taken her name and the hundreds of thousands of sales that were sure to follow her next offering to a publisher whose 2007 sales were $6,412.32 million. That sounds like a number a child would make up. “Oh, yeah? Well, you know how much money my dad has? Six-thousand-million!”

Full disclosure? I loved Water for Elephants. A lot. And if Random House signed me to a lucrative two-book deal, I’d do cartwheels all the way to the bank. I might even use the money to adopt 10 bonobo apes, as Gruen did to honor the stars of the upcoming Ape House (Random House, June 2009, $26). Although, since my book is about Akwesasne Mohawks, I’d have to adopt ten Indian children. Maybe I’ll just add a wing to Akwesasne’s library.

Anyway, Algonquin doesn’t work big, but they could have used the boost of a Gruen. Here’s hoping that you, the readers, will supply that boost instead. Before I’m dead.

Thanks for reading.

Economic Downturn. Recession. Financial Crisis. Credit Crunch. Finances, both public and private, have been strained, to put it mildly. So what do we do? Hide under the covers? Sit in the corner and cry? Obsess with the gloomy news and live in near-panic well into the new year? I think not. It certainly takes courage, attitude and persistence to disconnect from the collective sense of fear and shift our attention onto our own sense of prosperity and abundance, but once we get there, it’s bliss. I’m guessing that more than a handful of women have decided (out loud or silently) to take control of their finances and see some real growth in their personal accounts this year - no excuses. Below is a list of resources available online that focus finances for women. If your desire for the new year is mainly centered around money, take the month of January to gather as much information and knowledge as possible, then make an action plan - however basic it may seem at first.

Ms. Moneywww.msmoney.comThis award winning website is all about empowering others to take control of their

finances. Covering financial topics from investing, financial planning and debt reduction

to purchasing guides and donating money, Ms Money breaks down the big picture into

step-by-step guides, no matter what your needs are.

Making BreadThe Magazine for Women Who Need Dough www.makingbreadmagazine.comMaking Bread, created by Gail Harlow, is the only women’s

finance magazine. With the full version available online for

about $20 annually, this monthly magazine is loaded with advice,

information and resources addressing women’s financial needs.

Your subscription will also give you access to archived issues that

contain a wealth of information. Women’s Institute for Financial Freedomwww.wife.orgWIFE.org is the oldest non-profit organization dedicated to financial education and

supporting women in attaining financial independence. With workshops, online videos

and even information on creating a “money club”, this website gives women insight

and valuable ideas on how to take control of their finances. They even have a special

section dedicated to women who are recently divorced or widowed an are in need of

direction and support with regards to finances.

In all realms of life it takes courage to stretch your limits, express your power, and fulfill

your potential - it's no different in the financial realm.

WHO: Patricia BeckWHAT: Public Speaker, Personal Development Coach, Workshop Facilitator. Certified Facilitator for Passion Test and Futurepoint.WHERE: Born in Hollywood, FL. Has lived in Yellowstone National Park, Italy and Australia. She currently resides in South Miami.WHEN: Started her new career path in June, 2007.WHY: “I have always noticed that people, even strangers, come to me to talk about their lives.” During these conversations, which where often about the search for purpose, Patty found herself naturally asking intuitive question and guiding others on how to pursue their dreams. MOXXI MOMENT: For Patricia, deciding to quit her job as a High School English Teacher a year and a half ago was one of the hardest decisions in her life. “I felt that I was standing at the edge of a cliff about to jump off. But I knew that I had to do it.” She felt certain that it was time to pursue her dream of empowering people through personal development to create a life of joy, fulfillment, and success. Ever since I made that decision, my life has transformed in incredible ways. I am the happiest I have ever been.

When Patricia discovered the Passion Test, she immediately knew what she was meant to do. As a Humanities major in college, Patty had no desire to be part of the business world, but once she followed her heart, she realized the freedom and creativity inherent in owning your own business. Although she never thought she would enjoy it, Patty now embraces the excitement and challenge of creating a prosperous business centered around what she loves to do. In the process she has also uncovered the strength and courage within herself to accomplish anything in her life. Her sight is now set on encouraging others to access the courage and faith that will allow them to pursue their dreams and create their ideal life. In regards to women, Patty believes we have incredible influence, “because women have their finger on the pulse of all aspects of life. I envision women being empowered, passionate, and committed to standing up for what they believe in and making a difference in the world.” We can’t help but applaud that idea of women “standing up for what they believe” - after all that’s what having Moxxi is all about! Fortunately for us, Patty is here to support and encourage us on our path to creating the life we believe is possible.

Our beautiful bodies are a gift that we keep throughout our lives. We are in fact the masters of our bodies and

we decide how we want to treat them. It is completely up to us to decide how we want to feel. Simply put,

when we are good to our bodies, we feel great; when we are not so nice, we feel bad.

As we begin a new year, many of us will take a moment to look at what we would like to accomplish or improve in

our lives. When it comes to physical well being, ask yourself these questions: Have you ever desired to do better for

your body? Have you ever found yourself desiring to have someone else’s body? Do you want to take command of

how you look and feel? At one point in my life, I answered yes to all of these questions. I always dreamed of a body

that was stronger, leaner and healthier. Finally one day I turned my desires and dreams turned into action. The actions

lead to results which were not only gratifying, but also fulfilling. My body was stronger and healthier and I felt great!

As I began to see some of the results I desired, I developed an effective strategy to continually accomplish my goals.

Here are 5 steps that you can quickly implement that will move you closer to having the healthier body you desire.

• Believe it is possible for you. Adopt the mentality that if others have done it, then so can you.

It all begins with what you believe. One way to keep you motivated and your confidence strong is to set

measurable goals. As you meet these goals and your belief is reaffirmed, continue to create new ones that

will keep challenging your body. A few examples:

Engage in intense exercise for 30 minutes, 4 days a week

Give your body a 30 minute massage, twice a month

Have breakfast every day

If you tend to use the scale to measure your progress, keep in mind that muscle tissue weighs more than

fat tissue. Here’s an idea: forget the scale and gage your success by how you feel! Use the following

questions as the true indicators of your progress: Do I feel stronger? Has my temperament improved?

Do I have more energy?

• Focus daily on a mental or physical picture of what your desired body looks like.

Think about how every day and every action you take brings you closer to the body you want.

• Put together a team to support, motivate and train you.

Depending on your needs this team can consist of a couple of the following members; personal trainer, spinologist, nutritionist,

massage therapist or acupuncturist. Putting together a team doesn’t have to be expensive. Don’t give in to your preconceived ideas of

something being unaffordable, instead you just need to do your research and be creative. One of your team members may be open to

an exchange/barter with a service you can provide them. There is a spinologist in the Upper East Side charging a small monthly fee for

up to 4 visits per week. There is also a personal trainer offering classes at Morningside Park (MWF 10am) and Legions Park (MWF 7am).

He charges $90 a month for up to 3 classes a week.

• Persist on being consistent.

All appointments made with your team should be treated as important as getting up for work. If your priority is taking command of

how you look and feel, then make sure you allow yourself enough time and support to meet your goals consistently

• Celebrate all accomplishments.

Go to the beach or park. Take a warm bath with music and candles. Get a 30 minute massage. Doing those things for yourself that

make you feel great will reinforce your commitment as well as your belief that you can and will reach your goals.

Turn your desires into action. Do something ever day to bring yourself closer to your dreams.

Respect has eveRything to do with it - if you Respect youRself, you don’t need to

go aRound figuRing out youR boundaRies because

you’Re cleaR on it fRom the beginning. plus, if that otheR

peRson has Respect foR you, they won’t be likely to cReate a

“confusing” situation eitheR. i’m suRe that theRe aRe some

aReas that need to be woRked on, kinda like all those

spots youR baRbeR missed, but Respect is a defining

element in eveRy Relationship we have in life.

mojo, you do Realize that youR haiR stylist cRack just pRoved my point. eitheR way, i think that

if you aRe able to keep a solid fRiendship with

youR ex, it says alot about the way you Respect

the otheR peRson, and by default youRself. of

couRse theRe aRe people that don’t eaRn that, but foR the most paRt it’s a good thing.

Your basic extended family today includes your ex-husband or -wife, your ex's new mate, your new mate, possibly your new mate's ex and any new mate that your new mate's ex has acquired.

i’m matuRe enough to know my

limitations... unlike youR haiR “stylist”.

it does depend. matuRity goes a long

way, but people often lie to themselves.

that Really depends. basically, it boils

down to whetheR each peRson is

matuRe enough to handle it. so i

guess that answeRs the question foR you mojo.

what’s Respect got to do with it? you can Respect

youRself and still get confused about youR feelings.

if you lie to youRself, you’ll fall foR anything...like

that haiR cut you got. all i’m saying is to claRify

youR boundaRies.

A New Way to Clean

for f u t u r e Reference...

Pour half a cup of vinegar into the toilet bowl and leave it overnight to remove bowl odor (the smell of the vinegar will also dissipate overnight.)

In case of an accident, pet owners can pour white vinegar on carpets, then blot with a paper towel to prevent staining and odor.

Ants hate vinegar; so spray it around doorways and other areas they frequent to repel them

Full strength vinegar can be used to polish chrome and stainless steel

Sure God created man before woman, but then again you always make a rough draft before creating the final masterpiece.

A Green 2009

One of the most responsible and satisfying resolutions we can make for the New Year is to make the commitment to be more environmentally aware. We’re not talking about getting rid of everything and replacing it all with “green” items. Simply making more conscious choices will go a long way. One friend shared her strategy for not using more plastic bags at the supermarket. If she forgets to bring her cloth or canvas bags with her, she sets the mental rule that whatever she buys, she must be able to carry out in her hands. The happy side effect: she has found a decrease in her grocery bill! Small actions like these make a huge difference by the end of the year - just think of how many plastic bags would go unused if just one person in your family stopped using them for a year.

We’ve all heard of vinegar being a versatile and potent cleaner. Here a several specific tips for cleaning with vinegar. For more information visit www.greenlivingtips.com.
