The future is not something we enter. The future is something that we create. And creating that future requires us to make choices and decisions that begin with a dream.

Michael is a 26-year-old male with Autism. He is an only child and lives at home with his parents. His parents pride themselves in being very supportive of Michael. Michael’s father has a good job and his mother has been able to stay in the home to support Michael. It is clear that Michael is their world and there isn’t much that they wouldn’t do for him.

They have been with him through all the Early Intervention services, BHRS services while in school, attending multiple school meetings each year, and sitting in and advocating for Michael during IEP meetings. As an adult, Michael is now receiving services through the Adult Autism Waiver. He receives Community Support services, which have really allowed him the opportunity to become involved in more community events.

Michael has recently expressed an interest in getting a job and maybe one day moving out on his own. His parents are uncomfortable with the idea and don’t understand why he would need a job or to move out considering they are able to give him anything that he wants or needs. His parents have expressed that he already has a really good life and they don’t see why anything would need to change.

Have a job doing something that I enjoy. Not relying on my parents for the rest of my life. Being able to budget and have enough money to live on my own. Getting more involved in community activities.

To continue to rely on my parents and live with them.To not know where I will live or what I will do if something happens to my parents.
