Nina Spiro attends NATA Conference In January I attended my first conference of the National Association for Temple Administration (NATA), held this year in Nashville, Ten-nessee, through a full scholarship from NATA. NATA is the profes-sional organization, founded in 1941, for Reform synagogue manag-ers, administrators and executives. NATA has over 400 members, and is dedicated to improving the management of Judaism’s key in-stitution: the synagogue. The conference, titled Kulanu B’Yachad (Everyone Together), gath-

ered 260 professionals from across the U.S., Canada, and Israel. The conference was unique in that, from the beginning of the planning process, it was jointly organized by NATA, associated with the Reform movement, and NATA’s Con-servative movement counterpart, the North American Association of Synagogue Executives (NAASE). Our nametags did not identify our affiliation, so when I greeted another attendee, I didn’t know if she or he worked for a Reform or a Conservative shul. Our different experiences of observance and administration—the strictness of kashrut, the length or frequency of our religious services, the siddur we use—were less important than our commonalities—our challenges in reaching out to Millennial Jews, our work to provide engaging programs on a limited budget, our desire to harness technology to improve communication in our congregations. At CABI, which is affiliated with the Union for Re-form Judaism, we sometimes call ourselves “ReConservaDox” (Reform + Conservative + Orthodox) because we wel-come different flavors of Jewish practice through our Reform Shabbat service on Friday night, and our Conservative Shabbat service on Saturday morning. These differences can continue to enrich our CABI community as we learn about and respect each other’s spiritual belief and religious practice. In fact, some of my NATA/NAASE colleagues were jealous that CABI encompasses such diversity in a single synagogue, with our additional good fortune, in recent years, of integrating a growing cohort of Israeli families. I look forward to infusing my work at CABI with what I learned in four intense days of lectures, workshops, and animated conversations. Pictured: At the NATA/NAASE conference, with NATA Executive Director Michael Liepmann (left) and my conference mentor David Muenschrath from Des Moines, Iowa (right).

Rosh Chodesh Adar

All women of CABI are cordi-ally invited to celebrate Rosh Chodesh Adar, the start of the month that includes the festive holiday of Purim, on Sunday, Feb. 26

th, from 6:30

to 8:30 p.m. at the home of Shira Kronenberg. Please bring a vegetarian dish or beverage to share.

Our tradition tells us that Rosh Chodesh, the holi-day of the new moon, was given to women to honor us, that we might be renewed each month just like the moon. In recent decades, groups of Jewish women have been rediscovering this ancient holiday, meeting to share time, learning, food and drink, good company, and a sense of our own worth and place in our tradition and in the world.

Please RSVP to Shira at (208) 890-3692, or by

email to Betsy Russell at [email protected]. Shira lives in the El Pelar area just north of the North End; let us know if you need directions. Please join us if you can, and have a chodesh tov - a good month!

December’s Rosh Chodesh gathering included lighting the

menorahs for Hanukah.

Deli Days: Idaho’s Jewish Festival 2017, June 15 & 16

M ark your calendars for 2017 Deli Days: Idaho’s Jewish Festival on Thursday and Friday, June 15

th and 16

th.

Please join us this spring in the preparations for CABI’s biggest fundraiser, as we meet in the CABI kitchen to bake together and stockpile our freezer with delicious treats. Have a beloved recipe for hamentaschen, man-del bread, challah, or strudel? Bake for us at your home at your convenience, or even better, volunteer to

lead a baking session at the synagogue. All are welcome to come and bake. If you can’t participate, please consider a donation toward our Deli Days baking fund to help us buy our ingredients.

There are lots of ways to volunteer for Deli Days: Idaho’s Jewish Festival. If you are interested in heading up our securi-ty/parking efforts, that is one important responsibility that remains open. (Excellent training is available.) We will need all kinds of volunteers as June approaches, so please think about how you might like to participate. Contact Amy Duque at [email protected] for more information. If you are interested in shadowing Amy, in order to chair next year’s event, now is the time to begin! Mass baking starts in March: Sundays, March 12, 19, and 26. Call Telma Andersen at 284-4794.

CABI Board Notes from January

After completing a thorough search and testing of software options, Treasurer James Auw recommended that CABI sub-scribe to a cloud-based computer service, ShulCloud, that will enable the synagogue to maintain data base and financial records that are complete, current, and accurate. Members will be able to manage their family information, and this ser-vice will allow seamless integration between the database, the website, and the religious school. All staff members sup-port the adoption, which will be paid for by an existing grant. The board unanimously approved the request.

Watch for further information about this new development!

The board and Rabbi Dan expressed great thanks to Sandy Berenter and her committee for their work on Sabbatical book and lay leadership. Volunteers are still needed on Shabbat mornings -- readers of Torah as well as D’var Torah presenters.
