___..M,,.,,. · _ Eilitorial ROUND16

After the general bye last week it's back into t_he real stuff again with Round 16 of t he RFL. A quick whip around after Round 15 saw the GGGM Lions really assert their authority on the compet1t1on again with a comprehensive 23 point victory in terrible conditions at Ganmain. The MCU-E Goannas continue to impress at the right time of the year with a very good 2 goal win over second placed Griffith. Leeton-Whitton had a comfortable 40 point win over Turvey Park and Narrandera had a 22 point win over the Eastern Hawks.

Round 16 kicks off on Saturday at Gumly Oval where the Eastern Hawks are at home to the Leeton-Whitton Crows. The Eastern Hawks are running out of opportunities to record a victory this year and I suppose that they would think they are a chance today. The Crows will be participating in the elimination final this year but their form has been rather patchy of late. If they are to go any further than that final they must start to produc<e some form that would suggest that they can put it to the top three sides. Matt Robertson, Travis Irvin and Daniel Lumsden were good last game and they will be leading from the front again this week.James Richards, James Keenan and Danny Bramham wi ll do their bit for the Hawks but the Crows will be too strong and will run out winners.

M~her Oval at The Rules Club is the venue for the clash between the Turvey Park Bulldogs and the benchmark of t he competition, the GGGM Lions. As has been stated many times previous Turvey has had a horrid year but clashes with the Lions are always tinted with tradition and this should be the case today. The young Bulldogs will be out to salvage some pride against the Lions and Blair Campbell will be giving them plenty of encouragement from the coach's box. Wally Sykes, Dane Campbell and Chris Cerate have been ultra consistent all year and they will be key players again today. The Lions have been supremely dominant all year and with three rounds

remaining they are assured of the minor premiership and a home final. They have class players all over the paddock but Brandon Ryan, Murray Hamblin and Christen McPherson have been very good lately. The Bulldogs will be try but the Lions will be just too strong and record win number 15.

The Exies Oval at Griffith is the venue for the match between the Swannies and the Narrandera Eagles. Griffith experienced what would have been an unexpected loss for them last round against MCU-E and they will be out to return to the winners list at the expense of the Eagles. They will finish in the top three so w ill earn themselves the double chance. Adrian Burns would not have been happy with their last performance and I'm sure there will be a noticeable improvement today. Ben Wade, Myles Bunn and Jamie Bennett will be important players for them today. The Eagles recorded their fifth win of the year last outing and will be looking to claim a top five scalp before the season finishes. The efforts of Stewart Hutchins, Peter Bloomfield and Chris Smith will have a bearing on their chances of victory. The Griffith Swannies will return to the winners list today against a determined Eagles outfit.

The match of the day is at Kindra Park, Coolamon, where the home side takes on the dangerous MCUE Goannas. The Grasshoppers will retain a top three finish but they will be wanting to increase their tempo dramatically if they dre going 10 worry the top side next month. They have many quality players but they are not playing to their full potential at the moment. There is only three games left before finals so Matt Hard will be asking for 110 % from all players. Ryan Chamberlain, Nigel Scott and Brett Garrett have been playing well and they will do so again today. Rodney Simms has the young Goannas really firing at the moment and they are heading to the finals series brim full of confidence. They have defeated Coolamon already this year so they are quite capable of doing the same again. Mitch Reberger, Chris Higgins and Simms have been very good all year for the Goannas. I predict this to go right down to the wire but will lean towards the Grasshoppers mainly because of the home ground advantage.

I hope that fine weather greets all supporters as they head into Round 16 of the Riverina Football League. Thought for the Week: Man who drive like hell bound to get there .

LEETON-WHITTON (~ ll() l\1 s Woodstock Oval was wet & soggy for the

match up with Turvey Park, but it obviously suited the Crows who won 5 from 6. It was good to see several key players return for the footy sides & it Increased confidence.as the boys found some late season form.

U/1 S's suffered the only loss on the day, but for the team it was a definite win with three players sitting on the bench - a first for the season. Little man Ryan Dunn (Darto's Award) is the superstar of the week and newcomer Brentan Sessions (Coaches Award) keeps getting better in his first season of footy. The Iannelli Brothers, Steve & Paul both played good footy and received the Coaches Award & Ton jays Pizza award. Mitch Heaslip took out the Leeton Lunch award for anot her solid performance.

The two's played great footy to win by l 00+ points, Justin Davidson (Coaches award) has cemented his spot in this side, which Coach Neil is happy about. The Lang boys played good footy to earn the Brad's Mensland and Coaches 6-pack award. Darren Brooks who kicked 9.9 won the Liquor Barrel 6 pack. The MIA Club Mug went to Matt Meladonis.

It was good to see the l sts back in the winners' circle, with those returning from injury or a spell stand outs on the paddock. Players Player was Brad "The Head• Waters backed up by Brett Guest (players incentive) & Greg Looby (players incentive). Graham Dale had no probs with the hamstring to win $25 with Dave Harrison winning the same.MIA Club Mug went to Crash n' Bash 'em; get lots of footy Daniel Lumsden.

Net ballers won three from three. A grade won by 17 goals, even though Foxy got sin binned for a few goals. TURVEY PARK IIIJI ... I ... l)f)f.S It seems like a long time ago now but the trip

to Woodstock oval wasn't a real successful one for our footy and netball club. But you couldn't help but walk aw~y proud of the senior side who keep battling away against the odds each w eek. With the side st ill injury ravaged and with 5 reserve g raders backing up making their senior debuts the 6 goal loss was anything but a disappointment. Wally · The king" sykes showed the way as usual to win the mug. The bistro 2000 dinner for two went to Dane Campbell who is doing a great job playing at .ibout 10% fit each week. The socks went to Mr. reliable in defence Anthony Craig.

The seconds were short again and battled away but were beaten convincingly in t he end. Greg Eldridge continued his good form to win the mug. The socks went to Michael Byrnes who is playing consistent footy each week.

Th e under t B's recorded another com fortable victory and are marching towards September action very nicely. The boys are currently sitting third and are a huge chance to fly the flag for the club during the finals series. The p layers who stood out against the crows were Mick Cattell. Jeremy Daniher and Nathan Flanigan.

The net ballers day at leeton wasn't a successful one going down in all grades, although they were all close games. The A grade team is currently in equal 1st spot but the premiership favourite tag will go to todays winner. Our girls are st riving for 3 premierships in a row and Ganmain at this stage looks the team to beat, so everyone get to the court today to cheer on our girls.

So today is a challenge the boys are looking forward to, Ganmain on our home turf. Lets play well in all footy and netball and come out w ith as many wins as possible.

GRIFFITH s11r 1\NS It was a wet and miserable day for our trip to MCUE but

no one minded the rain, gi'len that it means dollars to the communities but it certainly didn't make for great football.

Once again we had to regretfully forfeit the U 1 B's and it is a decision which we do not take lightly as we are well aware of the ramifications as far as goal kicking awards and B & F votes but we are a Sunday football club and as long as we are forced to travel on a Saturday this will happen. Even next year when we hope to have more players, it could still occur because these kids will have Saturday jobs. Given that there are so many clubs in the RFL who prefer Saturday footl>dll, surely those few of us who prefer Sunday could be accommodated by the Saturday clubs when we have to travel and could play on a Sunday. We will certainly be asking the powers that be to look at this next year because it can only help the U 1 B's situation.

Given the conditions it was obviously going to be a "small man's game' and the Reserves had the assistance of a couple of these from the U18's - none relished the conditions more than Kris Duncan, and Tim Matheson was also well to the fore. Nathan Creevy must have enjoyed his g•me a fortnight ago against the EH uecause he decided to go back for a second go but unfortunately for him the rest of the team was at Mango. When he eventually caught up with them all and took the field he also made an impact winning the Casella pack. Coach Greg Dreyer returned 10 the side dfler a couple uf weeks on the sideline and led by example and it was good to also see Rod Simpkin back again. He won the Enbee for Hair Award. Bren Lanyon won the Autopro award and was also given the Players' Mug. Norm Campbell was solid in defence and took out the McDonalds award. In losing last week the Reserves have now been left with a mammoth task to make the finals. They need to win all their last 3 games and hope that Leeton lose at least 2.

The seniors would have to be disappointed with their effort. Despite having Rod Duncan back, they were missing Dave Curran and Simon McClure but the side which took the paddock SHOULD have won but unfortunately they did not handle the conditions as well as Mango nor did they appear to want the ball as much. Let's hope it's not raining In September!!. Thanks to GGGM's defeat of Coolamon we are still second on the ladder and will need to re-group for the run home. Game sponsor was Marlin and Webb and the awards went to Matt McDonald won the Exies Dinner for Two, Snuggle In went to Ben Wade (who has to be a big chance of taking out this year's Vic Hathaway medal as he's in the best almost every week), the McDonalds and the Players' Mug to Man Bunn, Adrian Burns won the Casella Estate award and Ashley Gardner the McNabb Petrol Voucher

Unfortunately I have been unable to track down any netball awards but I can tell you that the girls won two out of three. "A" Grade had the worst of it going down 66-15, however both ' B" and ·c· registered good wins, 'B' won 15-11 and ·c 25· 13.

Today sees another milestone for one of our favourite sons. Rod Duncan finally manages to play his 100" senior game for the Club (something that he should have done 6 weeks ago) and it is ironical that it is today against Narrandera. Congratulations to Rod, he is without doubt one or the most integral players in our team and his presence has been sorely missed these past weeks.

Game Sponsors for today are SJ & JA Plumbers. Many thanks to Steve Best for what he does physically and financially for the Club. And if you need a plumber give Steve a call. Remember we need to support all those companies and individuals who support our club. Without them we survive.

cooLAMON «.1111ss11«,1•1•1~11s Last Sunday the Hoppers ventured down the road

to tackle the GGGM Lions. In t_he ones, in fairly trying conditions, (especially after half time), GGGM took an early lead which they held onto unul the final siren. In a game where no goals were kicked after half time. Tutankahman's twin brother Nigelkahman relished the conditions while Jacob O'Neill continued to play tough and courageous footy to take th~ first aw~rd. R. Chambo dominated again ,n the land of his favourite pre-match meal, while Matty B1ad was on fire up forward chipping in with a goal (made up of points) to take the third award. A four-quarter effort is essential against Mango today to get the four points.

Pigmy's lads cruised to another victory after a tight fi1st half.To the boys credit they lifted in the second half to remain undefeated. Cookie played a top game providing a target across half forward to take the best player honours by a mile. Al Manly rose to the challenge, the tougher it gets the more he loves it and Junior Crock took out the third award for his starring role in the forward line and a bag of goals to show for it.

The U18's continue to impress with a solid win over GGGM. The lads dig deep each week and are primed for the challenge that Mango will provide today. Best players against the Lions were 5. Barty (what a massive future this lad has), Belly and Jacob Tipping who both played solid games to take the remaining two awards.

In the netball, A grade had another nail biter, this time holding on to a three goal victory. Star player Kate Fixter was named best again with young gun Jess Roberts also starring in the win. B grade won comfortably 27 to 14 thanks to superb games from Kylie Parr and Deanne Rudd who is having a sensational year on the court. C grade unfortunately fell one goal short of GGGM, 14-15, with Jess Panison and Katherine Furner outstanding in the losing team. The juniors kicked off the good day for our netballers winning 17 to 8. In an even team performance, B1onwyn Furner (is Flapper's playing the wrong sport?) and Ashley Hancock were great all game.

The club would like to congratulate Matty Hard on his recent milestone of 100 games for the Hoppers.

Finally, congratulations to our coach Matty Hard (VC in state team). assistant coach Nigel Scott and ones captain Luke Maloney on making the NSW state team. Top stuff boys.

Best of luck to all teams today against Mango. Go the Hoppers.

MANGOPLAH-COOKARDINIA UNITED EASTLAKE$ C.t:)1'1.,N1l._~ What a week in football it has been for

MCUE! An upset w in over Griffith in the first grade football give the goannas a huge boost of confidence as we progress towards finals. The day was cold, wet and ugly, but this w as just the brand of football the goannas relish.

In the U18's game was forfeited by Griffith, which gave the opportunity for the U18's players to have a game in the reserves or just come along and support, well done to those guys that showed up.

The second grade had a g reat w in to beat Griffith by 39 points. A bri lliant first quarte r got the ball rolling but unfortunately a lackluster second quarter let Griffith back into the game. A rousing halftime speech from Clipboard left the boys in no doubt what to do, as they took control of the game in the second half allowing Griffith only one goal after half time. Standout performances were seen from Damian "Mighty Duck" Martin, Zeke Creasy and Luke Kendall.

The fi rst grade game was a dead-set arm wrestle right up until the last quarter when Grant Bruce kicked a brilliant goal to seal the match. The courage and determination of the side was always going to be tested on a day where the ground was as slippery as an Eskimos front doorstep and the ball was as heavy as a bowling ball, but the Mango boys did prevai l against all odds to snatch a t rilling victory. On a day where each and every member of the side contributed 110% the best p layers were hard to pick but special mention must go to Grant Bruce, M itch Balding and Chris Higg ins.

In the netball front a m agnificent d isplay by the proud girls of Mango saw some outstanding netball skills shown at our home turf. Good on ya g irls!

Well done to everyone who contributed in organizing the goods and services auction the night was a big success, and thanks also to all those that came along and supported the night.

So until; Mitch kicks another goal from the

Comments, likes, dislikes, suggestions on AFL: AFL should put more back into country football, after all where do a lot of the players come from.

Comments, likes, dislikes, suggestions on footy in the Riverina: Dislike all Sunday football. Make Farrer League clubs have Under 18's as all clubs need to look after younger players to keep as many as possible playing Australian Football

Funniest / embarrassing sporting moment: None as yet

Most admired sportsperson and why: Andre Agassi .. just so good at what he does and has got better with age. Never out of the contest.

If you were Prime Minister for a day what would you do: Lock up all Collingwood fans and through away the keys.

After your active on field involvement ceases, what do you envisage doing in the future: Enjoy watching all sports and do something that I haven't been able to do because rve been playing every weekend.

AROUNP THE TRAPS • HARD MAKES ALL-AUSTRALIAN SIDE Following the Australian Country

Championships in Bunbury last weekend Coolamon Coach, Matt Hard, was selected in the All-Australian side from that carnival. This is a great effort by Matt and once again emphasises the high regard that he is held in all representative circles. There was extra Riverina flavour in the side with former Wagga Tigers players Jarrod Twitt (VCFL) and Danny Jaques (ACT) along with former Turvey Park star Mark Mooney (QLD) also selected in the side.

• DONS REUNION The Marian Dons Football Club played in their

first Senior competition - The Central Riverina League - in 1971 under the coaching of the late Merv Pieper. In the late seventies they changed their name to South Wagga Tolland but continued to play in the Central Riverina League until 1981 . From 1982 until 1997, when they disbanded, they played in the Farrer League, mainly in the no longer existing Division Two competition where they won several premierships. Last September a mini-reunion of their 1983 premiership triple - Seniors, Reserves and Under 19's - was held and it was decided to hold a Reunion Dinner for all players, committee folk and supporters of the Dons of 1971 to 1997. The Dinner is to be held at the CSU Student Union Building (following the demise of the Wagga Leagues Club) on Saturday, 14th August. The deadline for ticket sales was yesterday and there are no ticket sales at the door. Any more information can be obtained from Ron Carey on 69210297.

• MCU-E HALL OF FAME The MCU-E Football Club will be conducting

their inaugural Hall of Fame induction night on Saturday 14th August at the Wagga Wagga Commercial Club. During the night ten players will be inducted into the club's Hall of Fame and will receive specially engraved plaques as a form of recognition for their on field service to the club. An additional plaque will also be mounted in the Clubrooms. There has been a change in

guest speaker with AFL Legend, Peter "Crackers" Keenan, unfortunately a late withdrawal. Kevin "Cowboy" N~ale will now fill that void so nothing will be lost in that department.Tickets are $30 per head which includes a sit down two course • meal. Forward orders would be appreciated. A list of names has been circulated to members and supporters asking them to nominate who they think should be given the honour of being the first ten elected to the MCU-E Football Club hall of Fame. Some names on the list that will come into close consideration are: Horace Clark, Les Jerrick, Arthur Cole, Oliver Mohr, David Maher, John Mooney, Harry Mohr, John Ross, Frank Slater and Ken Lyons. Congratulations to the MCU-E Football Club on making sure that the past is not forgotten and indeed, remembered with pride.

• HOUSE KEEPING DUTIES All Clubs are reminded that they should have

had their Prince~~ entrant detdils forwarded to the Football Operations Manager by last weekend. Please don't have him chase you up - he's got enough on his plate without having to do this. Clubs are also reminded of the invitation to tender for the gate-keeping duties for both FFL and RFL Grand Finals. Contact Bob Hughes for further information.

• CLUB BILLBOARD TRYC will be staging their Sportsmans Ball on

Saturday 14th August at The Kings Own Hotel. I believe that Guest Speaker will be former South Melbourne/ Sydney Swans and local star player Wayne Carroll. An entertaining night will be assured.

The Northern Jets will be having their Best & Fairest count after their last home and away game on 14th August at Ardlethan. They have also scheduled their Presentation Ball for Friday 24th September at Ariah Park.

There has been a slight change to the RFL draw in Round 17. GGGM were scheduled to play the Eastern Hawks at Ganmain on Sunday 15th August. Could everyone please note that the match has been switched from the Sunday to Saturday 14'h August.

This week we feature a player who was arguably the most dominant rover in the Riverina of the seventies and eighties. He commenced his senior career w ith the APM Football Club who were coached under the legendary Ricky Quade. The player we feature this week is of

course Terry Haddrill.

Details of Playing / Coaching Career: Started career as a 15 year old with the Ariah Park Mirrool Bombers Reserve Grade in 1974. 1975 - started with APM Seniors under coach Ricky Quade. 1987 Assistant Coach Temora Seniors, Coached Temora Reserves, they won the Premiership. Represented South West League 1976, 1977, 1978 and 1980. Selected for State Squad in 1980 under Allan Jeans. Represented RFL in 1986.

Awards / Medals Received: 1974 won APM Reserves Best & Fairest and Runner Up in League Reserves Best & Fairest Lanham Trophy (as a 15 year old). Won Best & Fairest with APM in 1975,1976,1978,1980. Runner Up in 1977 and 1986. Best in Finals APM 1979 and 1984. Won the Gammage Medal in 1978 and 1980. Quinn Medal Runner Up in 1984. 1983 voted Best Player of the Year 2RG Med ia Award.

Favourite Playing Position: Rover

Most Respected Opponents: Peter Cerato (Turvey Park), Rocky O'Connor (Ganmain)

Best Players Seen: Jim Prentice and Rob Harper

AFL Club: Essendon

Current Occupation: Farmer and Grazier

Where Is Football Heading: I am involved in Junior Football at the moment and it is worrying to see most clubs struggling for number in all grades. Since the amalgamation of Ariah Park Mirrool and Ardlethan there has been a great deal of renewed interest in football in both districts which gives players and supporters a much needed lift. I can see this happening to more clubs in the Riverina.

Terry Haddrill burst onto the South West Football League arena as a young teenager with APM and immediately made an impact. He remained a high class player for over ten years with the Brown Bombers and along the way picked up all the highest possible awards available. He won the Gammage Medal twice - 1978, 1980 - which in itself is a magnificent effort. But when you throw in 5 Club Best & Fairest as well you can see why Terry Haddrill was regarded so highly by all his team mates and opponents alike. "Hairy" was not a player that would sit back and wait for his bigger team mates to get the ball out to him - he would go in and get it himself. He would not shirk any issue and was as comfortable at the bottom of a pack as he was running off Ricky Quade or Hans Heystraten. APM were unlucky not win a premiership in their original status but it was not because of the efforts of Terry Haddrill. He was the most consistent player in the competition for ten years and he has been justly rewarded for a tremendous career. If you look at the two most respected players that Terry listed - Peter Cerate and Rocky O'Connor - you can imagine what competition he had during his playing days. Terry has remained involved with football and is now heavily involved in the development of junior football in the Ariah Park and Ardlethan area. His knowledge and expertise are invaluable to the South West Junior League. All that is left to say is thatTerry"Hairy"Haddrill was a tremendous player who gave his all for the APM Football Club. So if you see "Hairy" at either the Junior Footy or a Northern Jets game give him a wave and tell him you enjoyed his Blast from the Past.

UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT

This year we are featuring a new sec tion called Under the Spotlig ht. Each week we w ill be asking a well-known identity w ithin the boundaries of t he MVAFA to comment on several issues relating to football, politics and many other social issues that constantly confront us. It is meant t o be both serious and lig ht hearted and I hope that all readers find it interesting and amusing. This week we feature former world class leg spinner and long time resident

and scribe for the Coolamon Grasshoppers, Mr. Tom Goss.

Who do you follow in the AFL - The Mighty Bombers

Do you think the special conditions given to Sydney and Brisbane are unfair to the Melbourne based Clubs - Yes, Essendon should immediately be given Simon Black and Jonatho n Brown as compensation.

Should the AFL Grand Final and Preliminary Final be played in Melbourne - Grand Final yes, Preliminary Finals not necessarily.

AFL followers in Melbourne are fanatical about their football compared to their Sydney counterparts. Why do you think this is so? - When you consider that Rugby League is comprised of boofheads, m eat heads and cement heads with the linguistic resources of a baboon with a hare lip and Austral ian Football is the most spectacular code of sport in the Universe - the answer should be obvious.

Without being to personal what is your preferred political party? - Labour

Do you think that Australia was pressured by USA to enter the Iraq war? • Obviously, John Howard is still trying to rid himself of the lingering after taste of George Bush's hemorrhoids

In your opinion who will win the next Federal Election? - Liberal, they'll orchestrate another children overboard scandal.

Who is your current favourite entertainer? - Clay (The Fat Man) Leff er

What is your favourite song of all time? -Macarthur's Park

What is your favourite beverage? - App le cider vinegar - It makes the blind walk and the lame see.

What is your favourite novel or publication? - Ragtime by E.L. Doctoron

If you had to escort Nicole Kidman to dinner what local restaurant / bistro would you take her to? - Beneath the Haml?den Bridge BBQ.

Place in order of importance: Mothers Day, Fathers Day, AFL Grand Final and your Wedding Anniversary - Wedding Anniversary, Mothers Day, Fathers Day, AFL Grand Final.

Bad luck girls, we didn't give up and went down fighting. Once we made it to Manuka aboard a Canberra public bus we managed to win 3 out of the 4 quarters of the match, the lapse in the 2nd quarter being the difference and costing us the match.A few big weeks fine tuning on the training track and the return of several key players to the team will boost us and have us head into our second finals series full of confidence.

Ever reliable Katie Staines kept the backline rolling and gave the mug a good work out over both days, little Dan just keeps carving up and with her stint in the middle picked up the Tarcutta Pub $25, our Griffith recruit Riz continued to shine receiving the Lavish award and little Piggy was at it in the middle again winning the Eagle Boys award. All in all a great effort and not a bad result for us. It 's better a loss for us now then a week before the GF. We finish the season off at home now, this week taking on Ainslie. Let 's let canberra know that the roo culling is still continuing.

Farrer League Editorial A sensational round of matches last weekend

which provided another interesting twist to the competition. TRYC defeating North Wagga has put those two sides on equal points at the top of the competition. The Northern Jets were too good for the CAK Demons at Ariah Park and that has put them one game behind the Saints and Magpies. The Demons are now in fourth spot and it is unlikely that they can improve on that position. Outright top position will not be decided until the last home and away game where we have North Wagga playing CAK at The Gullie. Realistically only the Saints and the Magpies can finish on top and it is tremendous for the competition that the minor premier will probably not be finalised until the last game. Although fourth spot is still up for grabs in the Reserves the most likely outcome would be that the same sides participating in the First Grade finals will be playing in the Second Grade finals. That's probably not the ideal situation from a League point of view but it highlights the dominance of the top four clubs in the competition.

Only two matches this Saturday with three Clubs having a bye. Nixon Park, Temora is the venue for the local derby between the Temora Kangaroos and the Northern Jets. The Jets had a convincing victory over CAK last weekend and would have been eyeing off second spot. But they probably would not have expected the Magpies to down the Saints and now it will be very difficult for them to grab the double chance. They will not want to take Temora lightly as they only scrambled home against them last outing at Ariah Park. The Jets must win these games with authority if they are to continue their slim quest for the double chance. Nigel Smith will have the Jets fired up for a big game today and the efforts of Damien Papworth, Jamie Wild and Allan Edis will be vital for them. The Temora Kangaroos have had a less than happy year and with three games

remaining for 2004 they must set themselves achievable goals for those remaining matches. They have proved before that they can be more than competitive against the Jets and Scott Blackwell will be making that point quite clear to his players. They have quality players in Kane Johnstone, Damien Ponting and Steve Drum. This will be closer than most people predict but I believe that the Northern Jets will be too strong for the Temora Kangaroos in an entertaining fixture.

The other game for decision is at McPherson Ova l where we have the North Wagga Saints taking on the Marrar Bombers. The Saints received another reality check last week at the hands of the Magpies and this must be of concern to the Saints brains trust. They did sustain some injuries last week but so did the opposition so that cannot be used as a cause. They would still be favoured to finish in the top two but they will be striving for top spot to host a home final. They have quality players all over the field but must not leave it to too few to do the work. David Pieper, Brent Pocock and Adam Winter were good last week but they do require assistance. Although the Saints would be odds on favourites to win this they will not want to take a victory for granted. The Bombers have a couple of tough games in front of them and Wayne Podmore will be asking his charges to give it 100% and you never know what might transpire. They have pushed the Saints already this year and they will be hoping to do likewise today. Tom Gorham, Dan Edwards and Gavin Graetz will provide stiff opposition but the Saints will be too strong in the finish.

We are counting down to the finals with two rounds remaining after today. Get to your favourite ground and barrack your team home. Thought for the Week: Man who stand on toilet is high on pot.

TEMORA

Last Saturday was not very pretty to watch for the spectators but one thing's for sure, winning is a long way ahead of losing.

For the umpteenth time this season the twos had a game In their g rasp at three quarter time but couldn't quite run it out. Highlight of the match was Pikeys 50cm toe poke for goal, followed by half a d ozen fist pumps and a handstand. Clearly BOG was Glen Hartwig who kicked 4 goals and knocked up getting kicks around the ground. Four votes in the Temora Truck & Trailer Sales award went to promising youngster Mick Manning, who also got a truckload of leather. Three votes went to the ever-improving Dale Harrop, whi le elusive forward Steve Block scored the two votes.

The ones started slower than a turtle in cement boots but gradually got on top to record a solid victo ry. Congratulations to young Tom Granleese, who made an excellent first grade debut and deservedly took two votes in the Temora Truck & Trailer Sales award. Five votes and the Red Steer Award went to Dermot McCormack who had clearly h is best game of 2004. Four votes went to Ross Devereux, who finally got shifted where h e belongs - the back line. By the way Ross, we're all sick of hearing about Geelong. Th ree votes went to hapless Hawk, Steven Drum.

If you've got a spare couple of hours between 6 and 8am next Saturday the club has a catering job for a Charity Rally at the Ex- Services Club. For fur1her details, see the hierarchy.

Today we face our neighbou rs from Jet - town, and there cou ld be no sweeter victory. Let's throw a spanner in the finals works and send them packing from Nixon Park.

The votes went: 5 Ken Fairman, 4 Wally Gaynor, 3 Jamie Pursehouse. 2 Paul Buerckner, 1 Joel Fairman.

A bounce back into the winning mode for the firsts. Jumping out of the blocks to take home a 133 - 100 win. Al Edis had another big game and took home the Bowling Club and Players Player awards. The Ariah Park Mirrool awards went to Emma Ryall (Ardlethan Fashion & Leisure) and Emily Bell (McDonalds). Remember to lock the vote count into the memory for after next week's game. This will be held at the Ardlethan Hall.

Some big games against Temora this week; games that are never easy regardless of w here either team sit in the ladder at the time. We need to be right on the money all day; a 5-minute lapse last time almost cost us the game. 5 minutes isn't long, but the time it takes to rect ify a situation is inversely proport ional to the time it took to do the damage. It takes longer to glue a vase together that to break one.

NORTHWAGGA

Last we weekend we headed to TRYC territory for some footy and netball and only ftnished the day with one win from 3. Disappointing to have to share top spot again in first grade but hopefully we can secure it with a couple of wins in the next couple of weeks. The netballers only fielded an A grade team due to lack of numbers again, hopefully we can at least have a couple of games this weekend being the girls last game for the season .... Thank you to all the girls for playing season 2004 its been a really enjoyable year. We have only had the one win for the year but it didn't matter we've been lucky enough to have a great bunch of girls who have so helpful to me this year and made my job a little easier. On behalf of Nat and myself Id like to say Thank you girls, hope you will all be keen for some more netball in 2005 with the Saintettes. Last Saturday the Magpie girls were to strong and ran away 75-15 winners the mug winner was Girl Poey and the towel went to Camilla.

ResPrves grade had a lucky escape and finished up 12 point winners after being behind at each break. They had a 4 goal last quarter and came away with the 4 points. Daisy won the mLg, Matty Howarth won $20, Bottle S20, Sammy Shippard $50 and Kai Piccalo also got $50. Thanks Scratcher for remembering to hand over your reserves awards on Sat night for the notes, First grades had to be chased up AGAIN, another reminder I need that information to complete the notes and its not to difficult to pass the info onto me.

Unfortunately the First graders weren't so lucky and lead all day to lose it in the last quarter getting out done by the rock boys who came away I 5 point winners in the end and now hold equal top spot with the saints. It was a firey game and they knew just how tu draw the North boys in and get them d istracted. We need to come back bigger and better this weekend and hold heads up. It was a unfortunate lose but TRY( are always hard to beat on home turf and proved last weekend that they are the benchmark team for the bum end of the season. Mug went to Laker, $50 to Bomber, Poey got $50, Whytey got $20 and Wints got $20.

This weekend we welcome the Marrar Bombers to North Wagga for some footy and netball, the netballers take the court for the last time this season and the footy boys wanna hold top spot in firsts and tr( and get back on top in Reserve grade ahead o the Jets. Lets hope the weathers a little better than the last time we all met at McPherson Oval. Also commiserations go out to the Red Lion girls who had there big match at Manuka last Saturday, unfortunately they couldn't come up with the goods either. No awards to submit sorry girls ..... AII awards tonight will be held at The clubrooms but this may be subject to change depending on what everyone wants to do.

Good luck to all footballers and netballers, Till 2 weeks time. Enjoy the bye and see you all for the

MARRAR IIC)lllll~IlS Another day of rain and icy winds welcomed us to

Langtry Oval for some important games of footy and netball against The Rock. Harro's Magoos were in for a tightly contested match against 4'" place. They were hungry for a win and it came down to the hammer a draw being the result. The boys have to beat one of the topsides to be a chance in the finals, so let's get behind them and show our support.GO HARD BOYS!

Award winners were: Mug Hawky, Dinner for 2 Darren O'Donnell and the 6 pack to Little Horse. Now to the first graders, in a low scoring game plenty of blokes put their bodies on the line, pushing the Maggies until the final siren, going down by 25 points. "Bopper" Hilton had another blinder taking more marks than Chris Tarrant on a good day, he drank the Mug. S50 went to Flano for his best imitation of mud wrestler. He thrives in these wet & scrappy games showing he's an asset to ourclub. $30 went to young"Gayns' and $20 to old Crazy. Well-done lads.

As we saw on Saturday night there's plenty of spirit in our club and some blokes look better than others in a dress and high heels. Thanks to everyone that pitched in to make our Mock Deb Ball so successful. We raised quite a bit of cash for the Footy & Netball Clubs. Congratulations to Mick Walker who celebrated playing his 150'" game in the red and black by donning a white dress that would be the envy of any lady. Now to the netball.

In the pouring rain A grade took on the top of the ladder team to show just what they are capable of. Leading from the first quarter they didn't give an inch with every girl putting in 100%. Everyone was so impressed with each others game that they decided to share BOG honours between the 7 of them. A terrific inspiring win by 11 goals a great way to start looking at finals. B grade who are on top of the ladder took on 2 placed The Rock in what was expected to be a tight match. Our girls had their minds on the job from the first whistle though, leading at every quarter. In the finish our girls won by a hug 38 goals to get 6 points clear of anyone on the table. Shaela Manin played a very strong game in WD, winning the Mug. C grade took on top of the table also, but couldn't quite match them on the day. The Rock running away victors. Codie Hancock played another terrific game winning the Mug. This week we meet North Wagga on their home turf for 2 games of footy and 2 games of netball. Good
