Welcome/Croeso. In pursuit ofvaried fish species in rivers, lakes, reservoirs, the sea and smallwater fisheries, my incurablelifelong addiction to ‘fishing’ inall its guises has led me tovarious locations worldwide. Ofall these, the most varied in anyconcentrated area are to befound on my doorstep here inthe Snowdonia Mountains andCoast area. The quality of thefisheries is exceptional and thearea has it all to offer the visitingangler.

My grounding in the art of fishing and its development intoa skill began during my youth, years spent whilst living onthe edge of the Snowdonia National Park. I followed thetumbling streams in pursuit of brown trout, teased rudd andperch in lakes and caught numerous wrasse, pollack, mackerel and bass around the coast of the Llŷn Peninsula. The intensity of this excitement grew and deepened as Ibegan to pursue salmon and sea trout that run various riversin the locality.

So what of the Snowdonia Mountains and Coast area, located in North West Wales? You will encounter thesteepest of river valleys with natural lakes, tumbling crystalclear streams and rivers, reservoirs and small water fisheriesthrough to a variety of beaches coated in pure golden sandinterspersed with rocky outcrops. It is without doubt afishing ‘heaven’.

We've made it easy for you to visit and fish the area - at theback of the brochure you will find various special fishingbreaks and packages. So why not try something differentthis year... try totally wild fishing in totally wild surroundings!A warm Welsh welcome awaits you.

The high peaks of Snowdonia overlook the Llŷn Peninsula and theIrish Sea coast which is strewn with differing fishing locations, mountain granite rock mass plunging steeply into the sea giving deepwater fishing marks close to shore. The area’s 300km of coast isstrewn with cosy sandy storm and pebble beaches, which are amagnet to the fish that inhabit them. The Menai Straits which dividesthe mainland from Anglesey is set in stunning scenery. The fishinghere is mainly spring to late autumn with bass being the main quarry, best fished on a rising tide. Baits include crab, rag and lug, spinning isalso effective. Dinas Dinlle itself is another venue well worth a visit aslate spring early summer sees the arrival of the tope packs. These fishgive tremendous sport to the anglers and can weigh from twentypounds upwards. Availability is also present of outings on skipperedcrafts for conger, tope, ling, bull huss, whiting, the list is endless. Whenyou look into the available opportunities and quality of the fishing, you need look no further for you have found the ‘best’ there is! Fortidal information please visitwww.bbc.co.uk/weather/coast/tides,any good fishing tackle shop or one of the tourist information centres.

With more than a hundred lakes, all with their own distinctivecharacter and a plethora of rivers the game fishing opportunities inthe area are truly endless! South east of the largest natural lake inWales the river Dee flows out of Bala Lake and through Gwyneddbefore entering into Denbighshire. ‘Game fishing’ can be experiencedthrough seasonal salmon, brown trout and grayling. AlexanderSarakhanov (right) from Russia, took seven grayling in a four hoursession, his first ever ‘fly fishing’ outing. ‘Dolgadfa’ can boast the bestavailable river fishing watched over by soaring buzzards where thesilence is seldom broken other than by the cry of the curlew, a sheepbleating, or a lone raven crowing. For further information about‘Dolgadfa’ visitwww.dolgadfa.co.uk. The game fishing seasonusually operates from March to November. Some fisheries though areopen all year.

Available within the backdrop and the magnificent splendour of theSnowdonia Mountains and Coast area, are some excellent coarsefishing venues offering that unique quality in experience.

At Eisteddfa small water fishery, situated on the outskirts ofPentrefelin village near Criccieth, time stands still. Anglers soak up thesplendour and enjoy the fishing. Norman Kingscott from Birminghamcaught this carp as I approached, he has taken his holidays in Walesfor the past 35 years and described his affection with the area as‘almost paradise’.

Eisteddfa has three well stocked pools, and offers fishing forspecimen carp. When evaluating this quality with the beauty of thearea and its magnetic draw, I have to agree that Norman’s descriptionis very apt.

Protecting the Environment•Where possible and where safe to do so, releaseyour fish while it is still in the water.• If you have to bring the fish ashore or onboardto unhook it, try to use a net, (never gaff a fishyou intend to release), handle the fish with wethands and minimise the time the fish is kept outof the water. These measures will improve thechances of fish surviving on return.• If you want to photograph or weigh your fish, handle firmly to prevent dropping or injury. Afish can injure itself struggling to escape, so holdfirmly and have the camera or scales readybefore starting to fish. Never hold a fish underthe gill covers if it is to be returned.• If you want to release all your fish, try usingbarbless or circle hooks. Barbless hooks maymean you lose a few more fish, but returning thefish you catch is easier for you and the fish. Thecorrect use of a disgorger will also increase thechance of releasing a healthy fish.• If you catch a tagged fish, send the completetag and details of the species and length of thefish and location and time of capture to thelocal fisheries office.

Returning fish alive and healthy helps to sustainour sport!

LitterLitter is an eyesore and costs local communities inclean-up operations and reduced amenity value.Plastic litter is particularly dangerous because it isstrong and does not degrade, and items like six-pack rings, fishing line and carrier bags canentangle and choke wildlife.• Reducing litter protects the environment, marineresources and local economies.• Be prepared – take a bag with you especially forrubbish.• Be responsible – leave your venue cleaner thanwhen you arrived• Take litter home!

PollutionAlways report anything unusual, e.g. pollution oritems washed ashore, to theEnvironment Agency T: 0800 807060

Fishing codesConservation code for anglersAnglers are natural conservationists. Spendingtime by either lake, river or the sea instils anappreciation of the environment and most anglersdevelop commitment and respect for the wildlifeand habitats around them.

This short introduction is intended to help youreduce any impact your angling activities mayhave on marine wildlife and the surroundinghabitats and to inform those whose actions, usually through inexperience or carelessness, canendanger the marine or inland environment andthe future of our fishing.

Access to land and fishingFishing from the coastal foreshore is a rightenshrined in the Magna Carta. However, this rightdoes not permit you to walk on private land toreach the foreshore without permission. If indoubt, keep to recognised rights of way. Accessmay also be limited in some areas – for instanceon military sites. Most rivers and lakes are privatelyowned thus do seek permission from the ownerand purchase a permit at all times.• If driving to your venue, keep to establishedroads and tracks. Park sensibly, preferably in arecognised parking area.• Do not block access points for landowners, farmers and emergency vehicles.• Launching of boats should be from an approvedlocation. (Please refer to boat launching onmap).

Fishing in the vicinity of othersTry not to inconvenience or endanger otheranglers. Remember, they probably have as muchright to be there as you do!

Accidental loss of line and baitLoss of tackle is caused mainly by snagging on arocky seabed/river or on seaweed and weed.

Monofilament line persists in the environmentand can continue to be a hazard to wildlife formany years. It is loss of line that present thegreatest potential hazard to the environment.

Keeping your catchOne of the joys of angling is the opportunity tokeep a portion of the catch for the table. Beforekilling the fish, first make sure it is above theminimum landing size.Return all undersized fish alive. Please visit

www.defra.gov.uk for further information on

minimum size regulations.

Catch and releaseIn the interest of conserving stocks andmaintaining biodiversity, anglers are encouragedto return all fish in a healthy condition. Manyspecies survive after catch and release.

Whether you keep or return your catch, thewelfare of the fish should be uppermost in yourmind. The following pointers will help ensure yourcatch is returned.
