Mountain Mist Discipline PolicyMountain Mist strives for an atmosphere that enhances a child’ssense of belonging, accomplishment, security, and self-esteem.Counselors are trained to deal with the usual issues that arisewhen children interact. This ensures each camper’s enjoyablecamp day. If a camper is found to be repeatedly interferingwith the enjoyment of other campers or staff members, the Vil-lage Director will intervene reminding the camper of his/herresponsibility to behave in an appropriate manner. The VillageDirector may choose to enforce an appropriate disciplinary ac-tion (i.e. a phone call home, time out, a discussion, loss of freetime, etc.) which is consistent with the philosophy of the campand which supports the camper’s dignity.

If a camper continuously disregards the Village Director’s rulesand maintains a pattern of disruptive behavior, the Village Di-rector will then refer the camper to the Camp Director, who willimmediately notify the parents/guardians of the disruptive be-haviors and the parents/guardians will be asked for assistancein developing a course of action that will be effective in chang-ing the behaviors to appropriate ones. A camper who does notrespond to this intervention will be considered insubordinate.

In keeping with the philosophy of maintaining a positive experi-ence for our campers and to ensure the safety of each child, wehave a no tolerance policy for extreme behaviors. These be-haviors include, but are not limited to, insubordination (as de-scribed above), possession of a weapon or any dangerous ma-terial (fireworks, etc), possession of an illegal substance (i.e.drugs, alcohol, drug paraphernalia, etc.), sexual and/or verbalabuse (including racial slurs or comments regarding sexual ori-entation), or violation of the “hands-off” policy, which states thatno camper is to make physical contact with another camper in amanner that is inappropriate to a day camp setting.

We believe that if campers are provided with positively struc-tured activities, they will respond with positive behaviors. However, for the well being of each camper and the camp as awhole, the Camp Director will either suspend or expel if there isa violation of the camp’s no tolerance policy.

When does camp begin and end?The regular camp day runs between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Theonly exception to this is the day after an overnight. After anovernight, the regularly scheduled day ends at 12:00 noon withbus dismissal running 3 hours earlier than their regularlyscheduled times. Extended hours are available on a daily basis(and after an overnight) Parents who are not utilizing the morn-ing extended hours, but are dropping their children off at camp, should do so no earlier than 9:00 AM.

Where is Mountain Mist Day Camp located?Mountain Mist is located at the base of Mt. Besek in Meriden at576 High Hill Road. The 67 acres of land borders the Walling-ford and Middlefield town lines.

What happens if my child is hurt or becomes ill?The camp has a registered nurse on staff and on the campgrounds during our regularly scheduled hours of operation(including overnights). The nurse will tend to minor injuriesand illnesses and will treat these as necessary. A doctor is alsoon call and will communicate with the camp nurse regardingspecific health issues. In the event a child becomes ill during acamp day, the nurse will call the parent/guardian to plan thebest course of action. In the event of a medical emergency, themedical staff will contact the parent/guardian immediately. Ifnecessary, the camper will be transported to a hospital or doc-tor (if the parent so chooses). Regardless of the severity of thesituation, we must transport by ambulance in the absence of aparent, at parent’s expense. This is the policy of our insurancecompany. If it is not an emergency situation, a parent may optto pick up the child and transport to the hospital. If a parent cannot be reached, we will act on the side of caution and will havethe child transported to MidState Medical Center via ambu-lance. Two Mountain Mist staff members will accompany thechild to the hospital to provide comfort and reassurance to thecamper and will remain with the camper until his/her parent/guardian arrives.

Page 29

Is camp ever cancelled?Camp operates rain or shine. There are no cancellations exceptin the case of predicted hazardous weather such as a hurricaneor tornado. There is no Camp on the 4th of July.

Are Parents Nights and Overnights ever canceled?Yes. Unfortunately, there are times when we must cancel anovernight. Usually, this decision is made based on the weather. If the grounds are too wet from a previous rainfall or if there isthe prediction of severe weather forthcoming, an overnight willbe canceled. Safety is always the deciding factor when cancel-ing the overnight and the Camp Director will not make this de-cision until 2:30 PM on the day of the overnight. So, in the eventthe overnight is canceled, campers will be notified at dismissaland will be given notices to take home explaining the cancella-tion. Anytime a cancellation is necessary, the following campday (Friday) will be a regularly scheduled full day of camp withregularly scheduled buses in the AM and PM.

How is a camper’s swimming level determined?Prior to entering our pool, all campers are required to take the“swim challenge.” (This is equivalent to a swim test, but whatcamper wants to take a test in the summer!) This will allow ourWSI (Water Safety Instructor) to place each camper in a swimgroup with other campers of the same swimming ability. TeePees (preschoolers) do not receive formal swim lessons, butrather are given an opportunity to use the well supervised shal-low end of the pool on a daily basis. Swim lessons are encour-aged, but are optional, for Pioneers, Discoverers, Explorers,Adventurers, and Navigators. Specialty campers will have theopportunity to swim daily in a free swim setting. All campers, once they have been placed in a swim group, have the opportu-nity to take part in our free swim period, which is held daily.

What do I do if my camper is absent?Attendance is taken every day. In the event a child is going tomiss a day at camp, we ask that parents call us or send a note inbefore hand to make us aware of the absence.
