Saturday 4:15 THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH (1976) (UNRATED, 140 MINUTES) DIRECTED BY NICOLAS ROEG REMASTERED VERSION After a space craft seemingly crashes to Earth, David Bowie walks off to sell a ring for twenty bucks in a dusty Southwestern town, then almost immediately hires a high-priced, thick-spectacled patent attorney to register ten world-changing patents. Orange-haired, pale-faced, minimally expressioned Bowie desperately yearns to return himself and water to his parched planet—but will the authorities let him?—with coed-shtupping professor Rip Torn providing technical help, and chambermaid Candy Clark providing distractions via overdoses of very terrestrial booze, church, sex, and television. Roeg’s science fiction cult classic is an assault of fragmented, non-linear narrative style, typically striking visuals, and a quintessential 70s soundtrack by John Phillips of The Mamas and Papas. All too often seen in washed-out copies, this remastered version of the uncut director’s version allows Roeg’s dazzling visuals to be seen as they were meant to be. 11/17. SWAN LAKe (3 HOURs PLUs TWO iNTERmissiONs)FroM tHe royAL bALLet, LoNDoNThe Royal Opera House’s 2012/13 live Cinema season opens with Anthony Dowell’s production of Swan Lake, created for The Royal Ballet in 1987. surely the greatest of all Romantic ballets, Swan Lake is a perfect synthesis

of choreography and music. Though Tchaikovsky did not live to see the work be-come a success, his first ballet score is now synonymous with ballet itself, inspir-ing generations of dancers and crossing over into popular culture.

Swan Lake is one of The Royal Ballet’s signature works. in creating this production, Anthony Dowell aimed to return to an authentic version of the choreography cre-ated by the great marius Petipa and Lev ivanov for the mariinsky Theatre in 1895. Yolanda sonnabend’s designs draw on the Russian imperial Court of that period with an inspired blend of historical accuracy and gothic fantasy. 11/4. Sunday 2:15

gen, the first time in La scala’s history that the four-part epic has been performed in its original language and with the same director.

This production of Siegfried, which sees the twilight of the Gods and the dawning of the era of the Heroes, features some of the finest Wagnerian voices of today, including Lance Ryan in the role of siegfried, Anna Larsson as Erda, and Nina stemme, recipient of the italian National Association of music Critics award for her Brünnhilde in Die Walküre. in German with English subtitles. 11/11. FroM tHe royAL operA, LoNDoNRevolution is in the air in David mcVicar’s wonderfully il-luminating production of The Marriage of Figaro. Life on an estate in the late 1820s reveals with truth and wit all

the tensions between master and servants, with the symptoms of Europe’s social upheaval never far away. Count Almaviva’s attempts to bed his manservant Fi-garo’s fiancé susanna are repeatedly thwarted by those around him, including this own wife, the Countess. in such enlightened times if the Count wishes to dance, then Figaro will make sure it is to his tune and not the other way around.

mozart’s music makes this one of the finest jewels in the opera repertory, with a wealth of famous melodies that start from the familiar first notes of the ener-getic Overture. All shades of emotion are portrayed through the solos, duets and ensembles with this stellar cast of singers bringing mozart’s masterpiece to full dramatic life. in italian with English subtitles. 11/18. of opium, the new friends begin to have fantastic dreams about the Pharaoh’s daughter rising from her tomb and enchanting them. The Pharaoh’s Daughter, originally a hit when first staged in 1862, fell out of favor with the soviet regime. in 2000, Pierre Lacotte was commissioned to resurrect Petipa’s mighty Egyptian fresco, and it became a hit yet again.

First choreographed by marius Petipa, The Pharaoh’s Daughter premiered in 1862 in a grandiose show -the likes of which had never seen before- at Petersburg’s Bolshoi Theatre. immensely popular with the public, The Pharaoh’s Daughter was given several revivals. in 1864, the ballet was transferred from Petersburg to mos-cow’s Bolshoi Theatre. But in soviet times it was considered to be ideologically im-mature and, dropped from the repertoire, it was virtually forgotten. in 2000, Pierre Lacotte was exclusively commissioned by the Bolshoi Theatre to resurrect Petipa’s mighty Egyptian fresco and he successfully succeeded in giving a new life to this forgotten masterpiece. 12/2.
