P. 4 MTB4HER - SUMMER 2016

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

After an absence from the bike — and the loss of fitness that goes with it — I was mostly riding solo. Mainly because I didn’t want to hold my friends back

while I struggled up the hills, though they said they didn’t mind. Then I discovered another friend was in the same boat, purely by chance when she “stole” my Strava QOM and we started exchanging text messages to joke about it. We were the only two women to have ridden that segment.

Last weekend we finally went on a ride together and discovered that we were riding at exactly the same speed and energy level. It was a ride that we had delayed for a long time because we thought we’d hold the other person back. While we were pedalling, we also discovered that we both see riding uphill as a necessary evil to get to the fun downhill trails, and we had similar riding styles.

A totally random ride that turned out to be exactly what we needed. Though the ride also turned out to be much longer than we had planned when we decided to explore some of the newer trails in our local network. While we had planned on riding for an hour, we ended up riding a total of three hours. And neither of us minded, aside from the hunger that started to set in near the end. After all, it was a pre-dinner ride!

But now I’m left wondering, how many other rides had I put off that would’ve been just what I needed?
