Our next meeting will be held THIS SUNDAY

at St David's in the Fields Presbyterian-

Methodist Church, 202 Hillsborough Road.

We're welcoming members of the

The Avondale – Waterview Historical Society

so feel free to bring a plate for afternoon tea

just in case we get a few extra folk along.

If you're wavering on whether to come along

yourself, here's a reminder...

Sunday 14 April 2.00pm

Garth Houltham will retell the sold-out Heritage

Festival talk

"The Cyrus Haley affair at Pah Homestead."

Please bring a gold coin to cover rental costs,

and stay for afternoon tea. There is plenty of

parking (wheelchair accessible).

DID YOU KNOW...."   Just Passing Through" by Jade Reidy is being

updated and reprinted, with updates

contributed by some members of the Historical

Society. Local Historian David Verran has gifted

the society his proofed, notated photocopy of

the book for our records - thank you, DV.

The Puketapapa Local Boardextends a warm welcome to the group to attend

this year's Mt Roskill Anzac Day

remembrance service

Thursday 25th April, 9.30amat the War Memorial Cairn, May Road. If wet, the

service will be held in the War Memorial Hall.

FEBRUARY MEETINGWe were invited to attend the February meeting

of the Avondale Waterview Historical Society.

Around half a dozen of us from Puketapapa-Mt

Roskill trotted along to a packed St Ninian's

Church in Avondale (around 50 in attendance) to

hear presentations on the HMS Orpheusshipwreck. The celebrations for the event were

that week, so it was timely to get the latest

research on the tragedy and get a chance to hear

some of the speeches that were to be made to

invited guests in the days ahead.

It was also an opportunity to mention our own

Mt Roskill developments with regard to the Three

Kings council building and to meet members of

our fellow historical societies. It was an

impressive meeting - many thanks to Avondale-

Waterview for the invite - great to see whatother groups are doing.

HERITAGE FORUM Here's a brief rundown of some of the highlights of the

Heritage Forum held 26 March 2013 at the Fickling

Centre.

A 1000+ signature petition was presented to

Council regarding the old Council buildings at

Three Kings, culminating in a positive outcome -

there will not be a demolition of the original

building. It does require waterproofing and

renovation to bring it back to the 1957 footprint,

however, and now requires a plan to secure

funding for it's restoration. The efforts of the

Society were key to the campaign!!

The Board's further work:

Interpretive Signage: The first set at St Andrew's

Reserve. Michael Wood asked for suggestions

from the floor as to significant sites (the public

will be given the opportunity to vote for the

sites).

Suggestions: Wesleyan Mission Institute at Three

Kings, Three Kings School, May Road Bus Depot

and Tram workshop, Lovelock Track, the Maunga,

May Rd School, Oakley Creek, and

Monte Cecilia School.

Women's Suffrage: It's the 120th anniversary of

Universal Suffrage this year. The Board's idea is to

give a greater profile to women - they are funding

a research project on the contribution of women

in Roskill. Also a commemorative place - perhaps

in the Rose Garden - to acknowledge suffrage and

women in our area. Garth suggested a Time

Capsule for opening at next centenary.

The Library has requested access to data at the

end of the project

Puketapapa heritage: Specific areas are to be

identified as places to be evaluated for

scheduling. The research stage is March through

to June.

Lisa Truttman's Presentation: The presentation

looked at the early land ownership and

organisation - public works and roads, highway

districts, reticulation of utilities, fire protection

history, private housing, state housing,

commercial development, Dominion Road, 1950s

state housing, retail sites.

Yet to be covered ; churches, postal and telegraph,

transport, roading, Dominion Road extension;

coastline and crown endowment, CapeHorn defense reserve, agriculture and

horticulture, abattoirs, and community

memorials.

Garth Houltham acknowledged Local Board

member Michael Wood's efforts, and his heritage

impetus, and thanked the Local Board for the

$1400 grant.

(Thanks to Sue for these notes.)

REMINDER: It will soon be the first Annual

General Meeting of the Society. If you're keen

to be more involved, we would welcome new

faces on the committee.
