A Message From

DARRIN PIKE CEO/DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION

This school development report for the 2012-13 school year outlines your school’s successes and highlights in matters such as student achievement and professional development. The planning and execution of a school development plan is an important process that must be undertaken by the entire school community. A thorough plan lays the foundation for a productive and successful school year and will be beneficial to every member of the school community, most importantly the students of your school. As we move ahead with the development of a new strategic plan for the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District I thank our administrators, teaching staff, school councils and school communities for their efforts in developing and implementing the previous plans to ensure student success and achievement. Such collaboration is important to grow together as a school community for the betterment of our education system. I look forward with great enthusiasm to the progress we are going to make as we build upon these school development plans and continue to provide a quality education for every student in our province. Sincerely, Darrin Pike CEO/Director of Education

Principal’s Message Mount Pearl Senior High first opened on December 19th 1986, and is currently under the trusteeship of the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District. Our school remains committed to excellence in English and French literacy, Mathematics, Science and Technology, Social/Cultural Studies, and the Fine Arts. Our aim is to allow each individual student to achieve his/her personal best in a safe, caring and socially just learning environment. This report outlines the current profile of our school and provides information about staffing, population trends, provincial testing, and special school functions. To be successful we must analyze our achievement and school climate data to determine our strengths and weaknesses. The provincial school development model is a mechanism to do just that. The school went through an internal and external review process in 2011-2012. MPSH is in year one of our school development plan. Our first goal is to create and maintain a school culture that fosters safe, healthy, caring, collaborative environments. Our second goal is to provide and support enhanced learning opportunities for all students and teachers where technology is used as a tool to maximize achievement and success. We have outlined how we are attempting to achieve these goals in detail in the pages that follow. Please take the time to read this report as we value your opinion and input regarding future changes and improvements. Feel free to contact the school should you have any questions or suggestions about anything contained herein. Please keep in mind that this report is only a summary of some key points. Therefore, you may want to browse our school's web site (www.mpsh.ca) to find out more about what we do throughout the entire school year. I am excited for and encouraged by our school with the many successes our students have had this past school year. Our students had many outstanding accomplishments locally, provincially and nationally. None of these would have been possible without the hard work of teachers, parents, students, and school community. Mount Pearl Senior has an abundance of outstanding students and teachers. This is the single most important reason why our school is able to have this degree of success. Finally, I would like to thank all the volunteers who commit so freely of their time. From coaching teams to organizing the safe grad, our school is fortunate to have a continuous pool of exceptional, volunteer resources. I would also like to thank our School Council members for guiding our school. Thanks again for all your help! Sincerely, DON KING B.Sc., B.Ed., M.Ed.

School Council Message I am extremely pleased to bring greetings on behalf of our School Council. I would like to thank all of our members who have worked so hard to provide a high quality educational environment for our children. Our council has worked with the school community to address specific areas such as to promote positive, respectful relationships within the school community and to foster Independent learning in order to increase student achievement. We will continue to focus on the goals of the School Development Plan in the coming year. We would like to acknowledge and thank the staff, students, and the entire school community for their continued hard work and support. Key Highlights/Special Projects

Guidance Department

It was another successful year for the Tutoring for Tuition Program at Mount Pearl Senior High. Twelve tutors earned over $7,000 in post-secondary tuition vouchers in exchange for providing tutoring to students experiencing academic difficulty at Morris Academy, Paradise Elementary, Mount Pearl Intermediate, and Mount Pearl Senior High.

For the second consecutive year, Career Lunch and Learn sessions were organized for students to hear first-hand information from professionals in the fields of Law, Forensics, Engineering and the Culinary Industry (Chef). These careers were determined to be areas of high interest for many of our students. The feedback from students was that the sessions were very informative and helpful in the career decision making process.

MPSH offered a 6 week parenting program entitled Parenting Your Adolescent (PYA) which is also offered through Eastern Health. In cooperation with the Guidance Counsellor from O’Donel High School, parents had the opportunity to participate in sessions such as relationship building, communicating with your teen, and understanding the teenage brain.

Special Services Department The delivery of Special Services at Mount Pearl Senior High is provided through the inclusion model as directed by the Department of Education. Students with exceptionalities attend class in the regular classroom where both the instructional resource and classroom/subject teacher work together to support the diverse learning needs of the students. The students’ learning needs, the resources available, the expertise of the teachers, as well as, the subject area dictate the type of programming the student may receive. It may include co-teaching, collaboration, pull-out instruction or a combination of these. In the 2012-2013 school year, a total of 83 students received services provided by the Support Services Personnel. This includes 78 students who received Accommodations, Modified Courses and/or Alternate Programs or Courses and 4 students who followed the Alternate Functional Curriculum. The Support Services Department had 6.5 teaching units which included both Instructional Resource teachers and Pervasive Needs teachers. There was also a total of 19.5 hours in Student Assistant time assigned to the Department. There were 8 students approved for student assistant time.

Mount Pearl Senior High Soup Kitchen In

Street Reach

3100 Bowls and Counting….

At Mount Pearl Senior High, we are striving to make a difference. The MPSH Soup Club does this through its dedication to helping people who are hungry and in need.

The 2012-2013 school year has a dedicated group of over 20 amazing students who are keeping our Huskie Soup Kitchen commitment of catering for “Street Reach”. Street Reach focuses on youth 15-29 years of age who are disconnected from support services.

Street Reach connects with individuals where they are to meet their immediate needs and provides a mechanism to connect our most vulnerable youth to programs that can help them. Street life is a harsh reality for a growing number of youth in this province and until recently there was no organization devoted strictly to assisting these at-risk

youth. Formed in 2004, Street Reach operates in the downtown core of St. John’s, and with the help of our Husky Nation Soup Kitchen Cooks and Bakers, feeds nutritious soup and baked goods to their clients every Tuesday and Thursday evening. Every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:30-4:30, vegetables are chopped and meat cut up to be cooked into delicious and nutritious soup. The hot soup is picked up at 4:30 by StreetReach staff and served at 6:30 to the hungry from their outreach location. Our students, who are also great bakers, want to

ensure a treat for those whose supper is our soup and so biscuits, tea buns and the occasional batch of cookies are baked weekly.

The choir has performed in Therondy (2005 - Japan), Heros (2007 - Europe), Where Once They Stood (2012 - Europe) and will perform The Gardens of Peace (2014) and The Dream of Tekanawite (2016). Females in Skilled Trades Initiative Since 2011 Mount Pearl Senior High has been a pilot site for an initiative to increase the numbers of females in the Skilled Trades 1201 course. Over the past two years we have increased the number of level 1 females enrolled in Skilled Trades from 1 in 2011 to 19 requesting the course for September 2013. The total number of females including Level 2 and 3 females has increased from 5 in 2010 to 38 requests from all levels for September 2103. This equates to a 30% increase from 11% to 50% over a two year period. Youth Apprenticeship Program Mount Pearl Senior High continues its involvement with the Youth Apprenticeship Program. In June of 2012 we had our first three Youth Apprentices graduate high school and move on to pursue their careers at the post -secondary level. All three graduates continue to excel at their chosen trade due in large part to their experiences with the YAP program. We currently have another 2 students employed for the coming summer with Pennecon and Starlite Electrical. This program gives students valuable work experience in their chosen field while attending high school.

School Breakfast Program Our daily menu offers a variety of foods including fruit, toast, bagels, English muffins, croissants, muffins, yogurt, juice, milk, cheese, hot chocolate, and snacks to grab and go. Also, smoothies are available on Friday morning.
