Dear Friends,

At Mount Hermon we are serious about many things. We are serious about safety, for example. We strive to make sure that our guests are physically, emotionally and spiritually safe in every situation at camp. We are serious about exceeding expectations, too. We want to provide food, facilities, speakers and recreation that blow your mind. We want you to go home asking, “How do they consistently deliver above and beyond our wildest dreams?” Seriously.

We are also serious about our mission. We seek to create places and experiences that draw each guest one step closer to Jesus. We take this so seriously that it drives our thoughts, prayers, conversations, plans and work for months prior to the start of camp. In fact, we started planning for this summer last spring. Can’t get much more serious than that.

To accomplish our mission we have discovered that being serious about FUN is of paramount importance. Play, in fact, is a very serious component of all Mount Hermon experiences. The natural, childlike inclination to engage in enjoyable activities with people we care about, just for the fun of it, is an expression of joy. When we inject the fun with teachable moments, the games with object lessons, and the play with opportunities for self-discovery…all kinds of serious things happen. Truth is indelibly cemented in memory, decisions are marked with milestones, what was in the head moves to the heart…all because we had some ridiculous fun with it.

Whether this is the year you send your kids to a youth camp, or bring your kids to a family camp, (or both), you should know that we are going to have some serious fun. Be prepared to splash with otters, swing from trees, dance on horses, ride on trains or skateboards or bikes. We are WORKing to make sure that you don’t, for one week, anyway. We want you to come and PLAY!

Seriously,

Lisa OlsonDirector of Program Ministries & Play

02 YOUTH CAMP INTRODUCTION

CHRIST-CENTERED, INTERDENOMINATIONAL PROGRAMMING.It’s pretty simple. We major on the majors, not the minors. What’s important to us is that campers learn about Jesus and how to take the next step in their relationship with Him. The end. Complex doctrinal issues are redirected to be handled when they get home.

COUNSELORS ARE THE HEART.Counselors are the heart of the teaching that happens at camp. We hire people who will echo what you’ve been hoping your campers will “get” at home. Here is another voice, another person pouring into your campers saying the same things. Whether provided by us or coming with your church group, counselors are an essential voice in helping campers process their camp experience.

THE BIBLE IS CORE.The Bible provides the content and context for the experiential learning that springs from the camp adventure. Now add that the world that surrounds us at camp is teeming with teachable moments allowing for unique lessons geared to the maturity and knowledge of each camper. THEN, add on the layer of fun themes that make the lessons unforgettable. AND THEN add drama, music, speakers, small group discussions, one-on-one’s with counselors, and individual time in the Word. All are used to equip campers to keep growing on their own. It’s like a layer cake of awesomeness.

WE WORKING WITH CHURCHES.With everything else on your plate — do you really have time to develop a summer camp program, too? That’s right where we come in. Let us partner with you. We’ll do the work. You and your church program will reap all the benefits. Send your own counselors or use ours—or even do a little of both. Whatever floats your boat, we’re here to help. Send enough kids — get a discount... everyone likes discounts.

BEST-OF-THE-BEST STAFF.Every year we get hundreds and hundreds of applications from college students and young adults who are clamoring to work with your kids. Who do we accept? Only the best of the best. Only those who have a deep passion for Christ, have clear background checks and outstanding references. Only 250 of these outstanding applicants make the cut. Then, they go through extensive training ranging from one to three weeks. Why go the extra mile? Because a camp experience is so much more than one week. It’s a major part of any child’s journey and we only want the best guides.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED.“Camp was never like this when I was a kid...” Right?! How many places offer whitewater rafting, paintball, horses, crazy fun programs, zip lines, heated pools and high ropes courses? Well, one that we can think of anyway. (Hint: us) Why do we offer so much variety? Variety in experiences offer different things to different students allowing them to explore skill sets and spiritual disciplines that will stick well beyond the camp week.

SAFETY FIRST. ALL THE TIME, ALWAYS.You can be confident that when you leave your child with us that we take all kinds of measures to make sure they are safe emotionally, spiritually, and physically. We vet and work closely with all of our consultants, licensing agencies, vendors, and advisers to ensure best practices in medical care, emergency procedures, staff recruiting and hiring, activities, food service, and security.

Two awesome locations... No, seriously awesome. Like they were meant-and-built-for-campers-to-engage-with-God kind of awesome. You can attend Kidder Creek, our northern California location, or in the Santa Cruz Mountains in central California. Regardless of which location works best for you, know that each program is built on a foundation where God works to transform lives.

MOUNTAINS

Mount Hermon’s Santa Cruz Mountains camps are in what is indisputably one of the most beautiful locales on the planet. A short six miles from the scenic cliffs and white beaches of the Monterey Bay, the mountain setting includes spectacular coastal redwoods, a rare sand hills habitat, streams that run year-round and our own private waterfall. More than 400 acres of land are the setting for hikes to high vistas and low river valleys. The adjacent Henry Cowell State Park and other nearby attractions make this site unparalleled for mountain biking, hiking, sea kayaking—and, of course, surfing! Three separate camp centers offer youth camp programs in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Each has its own pool, dining hall, and recreation venues.

CREATE AN ACCOUNTFor all camp locations you will be asked to create an account for your family, or log in to your existing account with a user name and password, and then complete your transaction.

PONDEROSA LODGE Ponderosa Lodge at the top of the hill is our Junior High and High School program magnet. The unique sand hills support both the towering Ponderosa Pines and the famous banana slugs. Extensive skatepark, paintball course, and adventure facilities make this the place teenagers want to be. Twenty-four cabins include enclosed bathrooms and showers.

REDWOOD CAMPRedwood Camp is home to towering redwoods surrounding the picturesque waterfall pouring into Bean Creek. Its spectacular remodeled tree house and various high adventure facilities provide non-stop fun. Rustic cabins are set a short walk from centrally located bathhouses, and campers dine under a redwood canopy on the lodge deck overlooking Zayante Creek.

CONFERENCE CENTER The Conference Center is set between Redwood Camp and Ponderosa Lodge. Home to Mount Hermon’s renowned Family Camps, it also serves ‘Amata’—our intensive program for Junior High and High School girls. The Conference Center is known for its world-class Redwood Canopy Tour, awesome fieldhouse/gymnasium complex, adventure courses and so much more.

RANCH CAMP Ranch Camp is an intimate cluster of cabins, with its own dining and bathhouse facilities adjacent to the riding arena and saddling area. Horsemanship programs run here every week.

TIMBERLINETimberline Camp is farther up the mountain, serving campers with twelve cabins and its own dining hall and bathhouse. Classic programs for Primary and Junior campers happen here, and this center serves as the base camp for Junior High and High School high adventure programs.

OUTBACK Outback camp sites are also abundant at Kidder Creek, enabling groups of various sizes to camp under the stars, under tarps or in tents, as they enjoy the wilderness.

A jewel in the crown of our properties! Located in northern California just south of the Oregon border, the camps nestle at the base of the breathtaking Marble Mountains. Just two hours north of Redding, this wilderness setting includes almost 400 acres of timberland, horse pastures, bubbling creeks and a fabulous recreation pond. Whitewater river rafting, rock climbing on beautiful mountain cliffs, and natural waterfalls are all short day-trips from the main camp.

Transportation from the Bay Area to Kidder Creek is provided for most weeks for only $75 each way. For details and seat reservations call the Kidder Creek registrar at 888.226.7386.

TIMBERLINE CLASSIC 2–6 Timberline 1 week $382

It’s time. You have earned it. You now have school figured out. You have the overnight stay at a friend’s house figured out. Now it’s time for you to move to the big leagues. It’s time for you to go to CAMP, baby! Everything you’ve ever imagined your camp adventure could be and more will happen this week. Picture this, you get to stay in a cool rustic cabin with a group of crazy new friends and a super rad counselor. During this week (that will go by too fast, we promise) you get to do a bunch of stuff that your mom probably doesn’t let you do at home, like explore archery and riflery (yes, like shoot things), slide down a water slide, conquer the aqua tower in the pond, go fishing, play crazy games, sing (or yell) at the top of your lungs, climb around in our ropes course, and more! Not only that, but you’ll get to hang with your counselor who will teach you new things about the Bible and chill at a campfire. Seriously, don’t know how it gets any better than that.

TIMBERLINE HIGH ADVENTURE 7–12 Timberline + Wilderness 1 week $460

Combine everything you love about outdoor adventure into one wild week at Kidder Creek. Check it out—in one week you will whitewater raft, cliff jump, spend a night out under the stars, scale climbing walls , conquer ropes courses, and climb an aqua mountain.

The adventure doesn’t just stop at the river. Just like all of the programs, you’ll hang out with some crazy cool counselors who will use your adventures and time alone in the Word to show you how your adventure with God can and does continue after camp.

It’s a bucket lister’s dream week... and more adventure than most people have in a lifetime.

Horses, Horses, and more Horses. What could be better than a week not only hanging out with counselors and other people who really dig horses, but hanging out with a horse all day, every day? That’ll beat anything you’ve ever helt, smelt or felt.

Don’t know nothing ‘bout a horse? Don’t worry about it. Our wranglers have been on these trails a few times and will teach you everything you need to know to ride and care for your horse. You’ll work in the arena, ride a trail or two and even learn a little horse science. Are you a youngin’ but already know stuff about horses? That’s great, too! Our wranglers know how to help take your skills to the next level.

All Cowboys and Cowgirls will learn some horseback games, how to do some gymnastics on the back of a moving horse and even learn about what horses can teach us about God.

Maybe you’re thinkin’, “This ain’t my first trip to the rodeo.” Then you might jess be an older ranch hand and perfect for junior high and senior high riders. We’ll show you how to do some more intricate things with these gentle beasts, matched to your level.

Although this is ranch camp, we’ll make sure you get out of your boots and into the watering hole, take on the aqua glide, and take in a nightly campfire. Then at the end of this week, you’ll show off your skills in our Round Up Showdeo!

HIGH COUNTRY RANCH CAMP 7–12 Ranch + Wilderness 1 week $593

It’s like you just walked on to a set of a movie. Picture this: You wake up 6,000 feet up in the mountains and walk out of your tent to catch the sunrise just in time to see it break over the peaks. Then, as you stretch your arms and breathe in deep the fresh mountain air, you look over and see your trusty horse for the week ready to take you on yet another adventure to another lake in the mountains.

This is the life and for one week, it can be yours. Horses, mountains, lakes, nature, and great people to build amazing memories. We’ll train in the arena and pack the horses, head out on and stay on the trail. Then, We’ll head back to camp just in time to get your tall tales together for Friday’s Showdeo. Don’t miss out on this... Seriously.

KIDDER CREEK 09

Application Required

Take your experience to a deeper level with the two week program of Echo. In these two weeks you’ll not only have a blast doing everything that camp has to offer (whitewater rafting, climbing and more) but you’ll get a small taste of what it is like to love others, play hard, and serve God all as an amazing act of worship.

Echo campers live in cabins at Timberline and get to serve the younger campers by doing projects that range from cleaning to construction. ECHO is a great introduction to serving behind the scenes and watching God do cool things in the lives of campers and yourself.

WRANGLER IN TRAINING (WIT) 10–12 Ranch 2 Weeks $593

Advanced Ranch Camp Application Required

When you were little at Kidder Creek, do you remember thinking, “I want to be a Wrangler here someday!” This is the first step to fulfilling that dream! After you’ve gone through the skills training in Advanced Ranch Camp, WIT is waiting for you. In these two weeks, you’ll assist with the care of the horses, daily lessons and trail rides. You get to be “the wrangler” and help younger campers with their skills. After the work day, you’ll gather with your counselors and other WIT campers to debrief the day, dive into spiritual growth and really get that chance to develop your skills and leadership.

Every year you come to camp, there should be this level of coming for a familiar adventure, but then pushing yourself on to a new one. Let’s say you’ve come a number of times and you think you can predict what’s going to happen next... That’s a pretty good sign, it’s time to challenge yourself. The Intensive Programs for sophomores, juniors, and seniors do just that. Move beyond “camper” to a “staffer-in-training.” Guided by our staff you’ll learn things about yourself you didn’t know, challenge the things about yourself did know, and experience what it’s like to serve and love others.

“No one is going to believe this at home.” Exactly. No one will be able to truly understand the awesomeness that you experience at a week at Ponderosa Lodge unless they are right there with you. (In that case, you should probably bring a friend so they can validate how awesome it was.)

No, for reals. Every day is packed with epic event after epic event. Team competitions become legendary status, Crazy Dance Night creates a year’s worth of memories, Night games produce stories that are told over and over, and Forum... oh, the Forum. Let’s say you’ve come a number of times and you think you can predict what’s going to happen next... That’s a pretty good sign, it’s time to challenge yourself. The Intensive Programs for teenagers do just that. Move beyond “camper” to a “staffer-in-training.” Guided by our staff, you’ll learn things about yourself you didn’t know, challenge the things about yourself you did know, and experience what it’s like to serve and love others.

CAMPERS IN LEADERSHIP TRAINING C.I.L.T.

11–12 Ponderosa Lodge & Redwood Camp 2 Weeks $779 Application Required

When you were little at camp, do you remember thinking, “I want to be a Counselor here someday!” CILT is the first step to fulfilling that dream! These two weeks will rock your world as you dive in to Biblical Teaching and how to best serve and hang out with kids. THEN, week two, it’s YOUR turn. You’ll be paired up with one of our stellar summer counselors and experience what it’s like to work with a cabin of campers for a whole week! Depending on your session choice, you’ll either get to serve at Redwood or Ponderosa. Either way, either location is a coveted experience for any camper at Mount Hermon.

WHY ALL THE COOL KIDS COME FOR CILT• Specific training in leadership skills and character

traits with an emphasis on doing ministry NOW, rather than “when I grow up”

• Opportunities for recreation and friendships to develop throughout the experience

• Preferred path for campers who desire to serve on summer staff one day

Page 18: Mount Hermon Summer 2014

SPEND TIME TOGETHER... ACTUALLY TOGETHER.In today’s crazy, busy world there are a lot of times when your family is together, but worlds apart. We have designed a week to shatter that pattern. Inter-generational events and sessions blend fun and memories worth sharing. Activities are designed not to be done alone but with your whole family. Don’t just watch your family do camp. Do camp with your family!

SPACE FOR A BREATHER.You may be thinking, “My kids don’t think I’m cool anymore,” or “I was kind of hoping for a break from my little ones.” Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Even though this is family camp, part of being a family is getting support from all sides. That’s why during the week, we provide amazing programs with outstanding counselors for the children and teenagers, and options for the adults, are built into the schedule each day.

Each of our programs (from the littlest of ones to the too-cool-for-school ones) are built to meet all the members of your family right where they are physically, emotionally and spiritually. That way, you have time and space to focus on what you want to: worship, teaching, and maybe, just maybe even take a walk or a NAP (and not be interrupted). You’re welcome.

BIBLICAL TEACHING FOR ALL AGESWorld class Bible teachers and seminar leaders bring deep insights and practical wisdom for today’s families. Kids’ adventures include Bible lessons, songs, worship, crafts, games, activities and skits. Teens get crazy with a great band and speaker. A shared curriculum that literally gets every camper age 3 to 100 on the same page of the Bible. We designed the curriculum to encourage spiritual dialogue that just doesn’t happen by chance.

WE CAN DO WHAT AT CAMP?!Your social networks, newsletters, and Christmas cards will explode with some of the most amazing pictures of your family doing some of the most amazing things from the summer! Picture you and your spouse on a tandem challenge course 70’ up in the Sequoias, the kids scaling the indoor and outdoor climbing wall, your nephew mountain biking, your sister and your mom sea kayaking, swimming, crafts, boating, and archery. Snap a shot of Grandma taking on the incomparable Redwood Canopy Tour, and Grandpa and the grandkids doing Discovery Grove! These adventures and more are calling your name...

Page 19: Mount Hermon Summer 2014

You’re never too old to be a kid again. Mount Hermon Family Camps are the perfect place to

create memories and dive into adventure with your whole family. With activities and programs for

everyone, a week here could just become your NEW happiest place on Earth.

DON’T LET THE COST STOP YOU.We have done our best to create housing and meal plans to provide an experience that meets your needs and budget. If coming this summer is still a challenge, let us know. Caring donors who understand how important camp is to your year make it possible for dozens of families to come every year. Call Registration for details at 888.642.2677.

A LITTLE PIECE OF HEAVEN IN THE REDWOODS.The Santa Cruz Mountains coastal redwoods are one of the world’s most rare, precious and beautiful ecosystems. Meandering creeks lead to an impressive waterfall. Trails and zip lines provide access to immerse yourself in the rain forest. A mere six miles from the white sand beaches and cliffs overlooking the Monterey Bay, just being here will refresh your soul!

PERSONALLY CONNECT TO THE FACULTY & STAFF. At a big conference, you see the speaker from far away. At Mount Hermon, the speakers, faculty and staff do life with you this week. Not one, but two incredible speakers each week, plus pastors and scholars-in-residence, seminar teachers and awesome worship leaders aren’t separate, but part of your experience in the dining hall, in the commons, at the activities. In addition, dozens of carefully selected, screened and trained young adults serve as counselors, activity instructors, and service providers in every ministry zone.

WE’LL SPOIL YOU ROTTEN.We love you and want you to have the best week, ever. So, we make sure there are a few things that will tickle your fancy and feed your soul. Seriously, like the best ‘camp food’ ever is here. It’s real food! You may even gain a little weight. Catered to your needs we even have kid’s lines, vegetarian, and tasty gluten free entrees available to accommodate your family’s needs and tastes. Espresso drinks are available at the coffee cart, plus shakes, hand-dipped ice cream and other specialties are waiting for you at the Snack Shop. We even provide baby-sitting so you can spend quality time with each of your kids. And after a long year, sometimes you just need a little extra love, so there’s even a masseuse to be found!

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE MOUNT HERMON.Every year people come, get out of their cars, and breathe a breath of relief. They’ve come home. We are so happy every time you come home, we make sure that all the things you remember are available: The pancake flip that is worth the hike to the ridge, the steam train through the redwoods that drops you off at the one-and-only Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, quiet space where life coaching and pastoral counseling are available, and of course the traditions of vespers, organ concerts, a comprehensive Christian Book Shop, homemade donuts—we could go on, but that will just make you miss your “Mount Hermon Home” even more.
