Blue LakeSituated in one of three extinct volcanic craters, the Blue Lake

exposes the crystal clear water that has filtered underground

through the limestone, passing slowly beneath the city.

Each year in November the lake starts its colour change from winter

steel blue to brilliant turquoise blue and then in March changes

back to steel blue. Many theories have been advanced about this

mystery.

With average depths of 70 metres, the lake contains 36,000 million

litres (ML). It is the source of water to the city 3,700 ML is pumped

annually from the lake into holding tanks which gravity feed water

to the city and surrounds. No swimming or diving is permitted.

The Blue Lake and the Crater Lakes area is a significant site within

the Kanawinka Geopark and is a State Heritage Area.

The Blue Lake Reception Centre provides public facilities and a

comprehensive interpretation of the volcanic area.

Things to see and do

When visiting Mount Gambier, make your first stop at ‘The Lady Nelson’ Visitor Centre. The friendly staff will help you get the most out of your stay in Mount Gambier.

Aquifer Tours (Blue Lake Tour)Tours down into the crater of the Blue Lake operate from the

Reception Centre. The 3.6 km road and walking track around the

circumference of the lake provides access to many viewing points,

the underpass between the Blue Lake and the Leg of Mutton Lake

offers great views of both areas.

Experience this fascinating 45 minute tour which takes visitors in a

glass paneled lift down the original dolomite well shaft, from which

water was originally extracted. Walk through a tunnel to see the

Blue Lake at close proximity. Learn about the hydrology of Mount

Gambier’s water supply and the aquifer system. Hear the interesting

stories of local history, European settlement, folklore and aboriginal

legend. Souvenirs, local crafts and refreshments available.

Umpherston SinkholeOnce a cave, formed through the dissolution of the limestone,

this sinkhole was created when the top of the chamber fell to the

floor of the cave, creating the perfect environment for its “sunken”

garden.

Originally beautified by James Umpherston around 1886, it is open

at all times and from dusk each evening the area comes alive with

possums as they venture into the floodlit gardens to feed. A large

undercover shelter with group seating and free BBQ is provided.

Free of charge entry.

Engelbrecht Cave TourThis huge complex of limestone caves under the city was first

explored around 1884. Cave divers, who have undertaken intense

training, regularly explore this site and have provided maps showing

the extent of this underground cave system. Check at “The Lady

Nelson” for a schedule of tours which take visitors down into two of

the chambers where divers enter the water to dive under the city.

Learn how caves are formed and how the underground water filters

through the limestone, making its way to the Blue Lake.

The Crater LakesComprising of three craters, the Blue Lake Crater, the Valley Lake

Crater and the Leg of Mutton Lake Crater, this area is a significant

site within the Kanawinka Geopark.

Valley LakeThe Valley Lake is very popular all year round with excellent

playground and recreational areas. With well kept picnic areas,

16 free gas barbecues, covered shelters, large grassed areas, it can

cater for many families. Nearby is Browne’s Lake which is again

suffering from a fall in the water level as it did in 1841. Free of

charge entry.

Cave Garden - State Heritage AreaThis sinkhole was the original source of water for the early settlers.

Famous for its roses, the Cave Garden is a great place for a picnic.

Walk down into the cave and venture out onto the suspended

viewing platforms for an awesome view into the cave. During

winter, storm water run-off makes its way to the cave forming a

spectacular waterfall. It eventually enters the underground water

system which possibly feeds into the Blue Lake.

With its spectacular lighting, Cave Garden is well worth a visit

at night.

Page 8: Mount Gambier

Heritage SitesTake in the beauty of Mount Gambier’s Heritage Buildings

constructed from local limestone and the unique pink to orange

dolomite which is cut from local quarries. Stroll around the Old

Town Hall precinct, with its old world charm and the re-developed

modern City Hall which overlooks the Cave Gardens.

The Goal Built in 1866, the former Mount Gambier Goal was operational up

to 1995. Today it is available for budget accommodation with a

difference.

The Glencoe Woolshed Glencoe Station was subdivided for closer settlement in 1903.

The town of Glencoe grew around the Woolshed, which has

been restored to its original splendor by the National Trust. The

Woolshed, built in 1863 by Leake Bros, features cathedral like

arched Blackwood beams inside and roof timbers marked with

Roman numerals. 38 blade shearers operated in the shed, and it

was never mechanized.

Mount Gambier Community RSLThe collection of Military Memorabilia housed at the clubrooms

in Sturt Street, is one of Australasia’s best RSL collections and

includes artifacts, items and photographs from 1815 to the Vietnam

War.
