Brown bin or grey bin?

Do you ever find yourself holding an item you areabout to throw away and wondering which bin itshould go in? What about margarine tubs, oryoghurt pots, for example?

Test Valley Borough Council says that only thefollowing types of item should go in your brownrecycling bin:

Paper (not shredded paper, though) Cardboard Plastic bottles

Hello everyone,

Well, we’ve had sunshine and showers, and sadly the latter affected ouroverflow car park during the middle ofJune. We continue to close theproperty when we run out of space, and we are very clear with people thatthey must not park on the verges or in

the village – keeping the access open is our toppriority.

We also promote the fact that we’ve been openingearlier to spread the times people visit, and of coursewe’ve had our usual late night opening. We aretrying hard to persuade people that lunchtime is avery popular time to visit, and that it’s better to comeearlier or later, then they are more likely to find aparking space.

Most people have been able to come in and havereally enjoyed the rose garden this year – it islooking gorgeous. The gardens team have workedso hard to get it looking pristine, and go round afterevery downpour or blustery day, tidying up as bestthey can.

We’re also getting excited about the Beano comingto Mottisfont, with an exhibition of all sorts of gemsfrom their archive. They have drawn a special comicjust for us as part of the family trail, where Dennisand his friends come on a school trip and go back intime in a special catapultpowered machine todiscover Mottisfont’s past. They have to explore thesite looking for key components to get back to thepresent it’s going to be a lot of fun.

See you soon I hope,

With best wishes,

Louise

For families…Beano Time Travellers!Saturday 20 July – Sunday 8 September 201 9,1 0am-5pmThis summer, muchloved Beano characters aresetting up home at Mottisfont for a vibrant newexhibition exploring 80 years of mischief andmayhem. From blackandred beginnings to the fullcolour capers of today, Beano Time Travellers!explores the heritage of the longest runningchildren’s comic in Britain. Outside, kids can whizzback through Mottisfont’s past with their favouriteBeanotown residents in a bespoke trail.

In the gardens…The peak of the rose season may be over, butthere’s still plenty of colour in the walled gardensthroughout July. The herbaceous borders provide a

wonderful floral colour palette right through untilOctober, showcasing a huge variety of plants chosenfor their structure, scent and eyecatching colours.Agapanthus, geraniums and peonies mingle withpinks, lilies and phlox. The centres of the bordersare a mass of soft blues, pinks and whites, whilststronger yellows, oranges and dark pinks draw youreye along the length of the border. Avenues ofpurple lavender give both the walled gardens andnorth lawn a distinctive fragrance.

In the countryside…Weed cutting on the River Test continues in July. This is a vital management practice that enables usto maintain diverse and productive habitats.‘Clearing off’ days when the weed is freed from anybridges or obstacles in its way and pusheddownstream result in huge rafts of weed can oftenbe seen floating down the river at this time. Theweed will eventually reach Romsey, where it will beremoved from the river, collected by the EnvironmentAgency and composted.

First of all: some important dates to consider.

Induction of Rev'd Philip Bowden.

We are delighted to announce that the date has beenset for the Induction/Licensing Service for our newpriest, Rev’d Philip Bowden. It is open to anyparishioners who wish to attend, and is to take placeat St. Peter’s Church, Stockbridge, on Wednesday17th July at 7.30pm.

We also very much look forward to welcoming Philipat his first service in Mottisfont at St. Andrew's onSunday 28th July at 11am for Family Communion. We hope as many of you as possible will be able tojoin us then to meet and greet him. As always at thisservice, there will be refreshments afterwards.Meanwhile please pray for him and our wholeBenefice as we embark on a challenging, andpromising new journey together.

Messy Church Club Picnic, Sunday 1 4th July,11 am

This will be the last MCC session before the summerbreak. There will be no services for the first twoSundays in August. As a celebration of the end ofthe academic year, for Messy Church we plan tohave an outdoor service and picnic in the garden ofMottisfont House next to the church. We will meet at

St. Andrew's and leave from there if the weather issuitable. Picnic snacks and drinks will be provided, but please bring a rug or something to sit on. If theweather fails us, we’ll just carry on smiling and picnicin the church! Please come everyone if you can.

Finally, as we approach the high summer season, some will breathe a sigh of relief that exams are nowmostly behind us. For many, but not all, holidaysbeckon, and there is an air of excitement andanticipation. So let’s give thanks for our manyblessings. However let’s also be mindful of thosewhom we know who cannot at the moment share inthe relief or rejoicing.

May we keep in our prayers those who are unwell, oranguished, and especially those recently bereavedand struggling with their loss. Thank you, and wewish everybody God’s peace, some sunshine andsafe travels.

Unfortunately Philip will not be in post early enoughin July to meet the Acorn deadline for August. Soyou’ll probably hear from us again once more. Thereis no September issue, but we anticipate that in theOctober issue you may be hearing from our newvicar instead of us Churchwardens! “PHEW!”..............(excuse me?.....who said that?)

The summer is now here (can’t be sureabout the weather though). The 15th ofJuly is St. Swithun’s Day. Swithun was ahumble man appointed Bishop ofWinchester in 852, and who died in July862. When dying, he asked to be buriedoutside the church in a place where hewould be trodden by the feet of passersby and receive raindrops from the eaves. However, when a new cathedral wasbeing built, Ethelwold, the new bishop, decided to move Swithun’s remains into ashrine in the cathedral, despite direwarnings that to move the bones wouldbring about terrible storms. He was dulytranslated on 15th of July 971 and, though many cures were claimed andother miracles observed, it apparentlyrained for forty days as forecast. Thusthe feast day of St. Swithun becamesynonymous with long, summer storms, rather than as an occasion for celebrating Christian simplicity and holiness.

In July, children who have reached the end of their time in their Primary Schools will be saying theirgoodbyes to their friends. It’s a sad time but one in which memories of happy times can be recalled andtreasured. Enjoy the Summer!
