ord’s three cylinder, one litre, EcoBoost, petrol engine, is a marvellous piece of machinery.It uses all the latest technology, like turbo charging, direct fuel injection and variable valvetiming, to deliver an outstanding performance, velocity wise, but combined with a very frugalfuel consumption and low exhaust emissions. The 999 cc engine has a power output of 74kW @ 6,000 rpm, which equates to a specific power output of 74,074 kW/lt, which is rightup there in the super grand touring category. In this five door Fiesta hatchback it offers atop speed of 180 kph (111 mph), with 0-100 kph acceleration in 11.2 seconds, which maynot impress you as a super sporting performance, but it comes with an EU testing standards,

Combined cycle fuel consumption of 65 mpg (4.3 lt/100 km) and exhaust emissions of 99 gm/km. That isimpressive, incurring an annual Irish road tax, at present rates of 180 euro. Fuel consumption on the Urbancycle is 53 mpg (5.3 lt/100 km), improving to an outstanding 76 mpg (3.7 lt/100 km) on the Extra urbancycle. From a driving point of view, the Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost is just as at home in city and suburban drivingas it is out on open country roads or busy motorways. It has the acceleration and speed to comfortablymatch all the diverse driving conditions you are ever likely to encounter. Its ride and roadholding is excellent,the steering light and positive, with a sporty 2.5 turns from lock to lock. The brakes were well able to copewith all the diverse driving conditions in a safe and confidence inspiring manner. Based on my experiencewith this car, I was not the least bit surprised to discover that it was the best selling small car in both theUK and European markets as a whole during 2012. In the ever growing Chinese market it was also the bestselling passenger car in 2012.

Besides being stylish and good looking, itis also a highly practical small car foreveryday use. The two front seats weresuperbly comfortable. The 60/40 split rearseat will accommodate two average sizedadults in comfort and can carry a third adultpassenger if the need arises. It has ISOfixfittings for two child safety seats, for thosewith young children. Its normal luggagespace, under the rear parcels shelf, is 0.276cubic metres. This can be expanded to 0.960cubic metres if the shelf is removed, the rearseat backs folded and you load to the roof.While the luggage capacity may not be thebest in this segment of the market, it is notthe worst either and is up there with most ofits competitors.

Although it has a smallcapacity engine, it can stilltow braked trailers/caravansup to 900 kg in weight. Whileits attractive alloy wheels areof fifteen inches diameter, thespare wheel is fourteeninches diameter, but it is a fullsize wheel, not a skinnySpacesaver, so it would beperfectly suitable for usewhen towing if the needarose.

The instruments anddriving controls are laid outfor comfort and ease of use.The main instruments arehoused in a binnacle behindthe steering wheel andcomfortably in the driver’snormal line of sight. Therewere two large, round,analogue gauges, with blackbackgrounds, white letteringand blue needles. That on theleft is the tachometer, with ared strip from 6,500 rpm to8,000 rpm. Matching it on theright is the speedometer. Itsbackground is also used to

display red warning lights forvarious functions.

In the lower centre of thebinnacle, between the twolarge gauges, there are twosmall indicators for enginetemperature and fuel level. Atthe top centre of the binnacle,there is a digital panel thatshows things like the outsideair temperature, the currentlevel of fuel consumption andother selectable information.The right hand stalk under thesteering wheel controls the

wipers and washers, front andrear, while the left hand stalklooks after the directionindicators, headlamp flashersand main/dipped beamselection. On the left handhorizontal arm of the steeringwheel there are audio systemrelated selectors/controls. Thedriver’s door armrest hascontrols for adjusting theexterior rear view mirrors andoperating the front electricwindows.
