The theft of motorcycles – from scooters to high-poweredsuperbikes – is on the increase across London with some stolenbikes subsequently being used to facilitate violent crime andstreet robberies. We’re working hard to help prevent bikes from being stolen and catch thoseresponsible. Recent initiatives include:

• Targeting organised crime groups

• In conjunction with the City of London Corporation, looking at the potential ofground anchors (please give us your views on this, see the survey on our website)

• Working with manufacturers and other industry partners

• Sharing information and best practice with relevant groups and stakeholders

• Briefing our business community

We need your helpWe are appealing to all motorcycle users to protect their property and help us tospread the word. There are steps you can take to help prevent your motorcyclefrom being stolen, these include:

• Use a number of locks on your motorbike focusing on disc locks and chain locks. The longer it takes a thief to break a lock, the more of a deterrent it forms. Locksshould be fitted tight to the bike and through difficult to remove parts

• When leaving your bike for some time, try to lock it to something secure. When at home, you can fit anchors to lock your bike to

• Use a motorbike cover

Police in London have recently seen an increase in vehicle related crime

If you witness any suspicious behaviour in or around motor vehicles or motorcycles please call the police on 999

• Property mark bike parts with your postcode or registration number, using an ultraviolet marker pen or property marking kit. Keep a record of the parts you’vemarked

• Your insurance company may not settle a claim if you had not used a lock or othersecurity device and your bike is stolen

• Don’t leave items such as helmets or other possessions with your bike

In addition, if buying a second hand motorcycle, check all the documentation and VIN and engine numbers carefully

If your number plates are stolen – please report the theft to the police
