Opening a can of worms?

The Government's intended review of how they administer vehicle licensing and the warrant of fitness system really does open up a can of worms in my opinion and in the opinion of those people in our lead story opposite on page three.

While the current WOF inspection system does has its flaws, for many motorists with vehicles older than five years old they know they need to take the vehicle in for an inspection every six months and more likely than not for many that will entail some maintenance such as brake repairs, suspension repairs, replacement tyres, etc.

Many New Zealand motorists are reactive to vehicle maintenance rather than being proactive, so moving the WOF goal posts to a 12 month interval will in my opinion see more unfit and unsafe vehicles on the road that shouldn’t be there. It would undoubtedly also have a negative effect upon the industry with the potential for job losses and increased costs to cover lost revenue .

Let’s now talk about vehicle licensing. Frankly it should be called the ACC vehicle contribution

fund because of the amount of ACC levy that is now charged annually through vehicle licensing. More than $682 million was the ACC portion last year from the total licensing figure of $870 million collected by the New Zealand Transport Authority.

The ACC levy doesn’t take into consideration how much or how little you use your vehicle, which is an anomaly in this era of user pays. It’s an additional tax, pure and simple.

Additionally as motorists we pay a petrol levy of 9.9 cents per litre at the pump which collected a further $303 million for ACC.

Wouldn’t it be fairer to increase the pump levy and decrease the annual registration ACC levy for those people who travel less and are less likely to make a claim upon ACC for a motor vehicle incident?

What is driving the WOF review?Transport minister Gerry Brownlee says he wants

to make sure that the current six monthly warrant of fitness regime is justified as it costs the consumer around $250 million dollars in fees for the 5.5 million inspections currently carried out by garages and testing stations.

Under the current system consumers are required to have a six-monthly inspection unless their vehicle is less than five years old and then only an annual inspection is required.

The announcement of the review by Brownlee has certainly highlighted deficiencies in the current visual warrant of fitness (WOF) inspection regime of vehicle testing.

Many people in the automotive service and repair industry have pointed out that less frequent testing of vehicles would necessitate the application of higher safety standards and compliance.

The minister’s argument that fewer tests could save consumers money might be easily quashed by the fact that many New Zealand motorists use the six-monthly WOF regime as a default setting to have their vehicle serviced and maintained to a roadworthy standard.

Higher standards would be needed to pass an annual check and there is also the issue of cars becoming less roadworthy in between inspections with the potential for more accidents due to their poor operating condition.

VTNZ chief executive Mike Walsh told Autofile

magazine last month that the terms of reference of the reform were unclear, making it hard to know what was proposed.

Walsh said that if the frequency of WOFs was to be altered, the content of them would have to be changed to reflect this.

“This would have to happen because there are certain standards that apply to inspections today, that wouldn’t be suitable if the vehicle was going to be warranted for longer.” he commented to Autofile.

“If you take the example where someone has a tyre depth that’s just marginally over 1.5mm, it’s okay for a six-month warrant, but for a 12-month warrant the tyres would need replacing.”

Walsh also said to Autofile that if there are changes to the WOF frequency there is every chance that prices could rise and that jobs could be lost both in the inspection and the repair business.

VINZ general manager Frank Willett also commented in the recent issue of Autofile (April 6, 2012) that the review needs to look at the contents of vehicle inspection process with a view to using more technology and getting more value out of it.

Willett told Autofile that he believes that there is room for improvement in the area of shock absorber testing and brake inspections but he is not convinced that the end result of the review will be savings for consumers.

“I think that there is a very high chance that if we

end up with a robust inspection process, once that it is all put into place there is a chance that the cost savings will be negligible.”

MTA is concerned that any inspection process should take into account New Zealand’s unique motoring environment and that safety is the upmost priority.

“We appreciate the need to operate systems and processes as efficiently as possible, but there are things about our market that need to be taken in to account. With an average age of more than 13 years, and getting older all the time, New Zealand’s national fleet is old by first-world standards; we would expect the potential risks that come with that to figure in government’s thinking,” says MTA spokesperson Ian Stronach.

In its 2011 Vehicle Servicing and Compliance Survey, MTA found that around nine percent of all light vehicles surveyed had no current warrant of fitness (WOF). This equates to around a quarter of a million cars, vans and utes on the road without a WOF, potentially some of which are not in a roadworthy condition. The survey also highlighted the low rate of vehicle maintenance undertaken by some drivers, with some incorrectly assuming a WOF inspection is the same thing as a service.

Murph visits NZ Formula SAE team

V8 Supercar driver Greg Murphy recently dropped in to visit the University of Auckland Formula SAE team who are competing in a vehicle design and build competition, the Australasian Formula SAE, this year.

Murphy, who was visiting with the assistance of MTA, talked to students about developing winning teams in a competitive environment as well as the transfer of technology from the race track to everyday application.

“I was really impressed with the

innovation the guys showed along with a strong team spirit. They have managed to combine a wide set of skills with some creative thinking to produce a really strong entry. I reckon they have a top chance of taking out the Australasian leg of the competition this year,” says Murphy.

The New Zealand team is made up of 30 engineering and commerce students who have a keen interest in the automotive industry, voluntarily working together with the ultimate goal of winning the 2012 Formula SAE Australasia competition and then onto the world competition. The idea behind Formula SAE is that a fictional manufacturing company contracts a student design team to develop a small formula type race car. The prototype race car is evaluated for its potential as a production item. The student team designs, builds and tests a prototype based on a series of rules, whose purpose is ensuring on-track safety with the cars being driven by the students themselves.

The prototype race car is judged based on a number of different factors such as design, presentation, fuel economy, endurance and acceleration. The competition encompasses most areas of a business including research, design, manufacturing, testing, developing, marketing, management, and fund raising. It takes students out of the classroom and puts them in a real-world situation.

The team’s leader, Som Sharma, said that it was a fantastic opportunity for students to mingle with a sports professional who has had so much experience in motor sport.

Allied to MobilChoosing a lubricant supplier

isn’t just a matter of price. There are other variables at stake including quality, service delivery, technical training and support. Motor Equipment News asked two workshops why they chose Allied Lubricants as their preferred supplier of Mobil product.

Relocating the entire Blackwell’s Holden and Canterbury Mazda service departments from the Red Zone in central Christchurch to the Blackwell’s commercial service centre in Sockburn was no easy task after the February 22nd earthquake in 2011.

More than 40 technicians found themselves working out of a space that was designed for 18 people to work primarily on heavy vehicles.

However with the relocation of some hoists outside the Sockburn building, the erection of temporary marquees to keep technicians and vehicles out of the weather, and by running a double-shift system to accommodate both customers and employees the company remained open for business during a very stressful time for many.

Most importantly the company didn’t have to worry about their lubricant supplier.

According to Blackwell’s service manager Andrew Mills, the company uses more than 22,000 litres of Mobil lubricant annually including ATF and brake fluid.

With more than 25 years of service at Blackwell’s, beginning as an

apprentice and becoming the service manager more than 15 years ago, Andrew says the lubricants market is still as competitive as ever, and the choice of supplier comes down to the service provided and the support of its sales people.

“Ten years ago we were with another supplier but we changed to Mobil because they supplied other companies within our business group and the costs were competitive and the service provided has been very good.” he says.

“Allied Lubricants have very good systems in place, which ensures prompt delivery of the correct product. The new Holden vehicles now come through OE filled by Mobil so it’s good to have that continuity in place.”

Blackwell’s use the full range of Mobil lubricants including semi and fully synthetic oil, low SAPS for diesel and two specifications for heavy diesel as well as Mobil grease.

Regular bulletins about specification changes as well as technical training and data sheets are also supplied by Allied Lubricants to keep the Blackwell’s team readily informed.

North Harbour Hyundai dealer principal Dave Bonniface says his dealership was using Mobil lubricants prior to 2008 when he and his business partners took the

business on.“I enjoy dealing with a family-owned

business such as Allied Lubricants because you interact with very good people who have your business interests at heart.

“We have a very good rep in Jim Gatland, we’re very happy with the service provided, which includes technical training and also providing a lubricant that meets a wider range of specification,” says Dave.

“All the pumping gear and the tanks and dispensers in our workshop are supplied and serviced by Allied Lubricants and we have a contract with the company that allows us to buy more product competitively or upgrade equipment as necessary. Recently we plumbed three hoists into oil which has been very useful.

“Service is a significant part of our business at North Harbour Hyundai, but you still have to be good at it because customers will go elsewhere if they are not satisfied,” he says.

“We run a lot of specific diesel products and we’ve never had a problem with any of the lubricant provided. Since 2008 we’ve never had a customer come back with an oil issue.

“Personally I use a Mobil lubricant in a high-performance quad bike and I’ve run it past 200 engine hours without any issues,” says Dave.

Stocks expands in Christchurch

Stocks says that business is on the up in the South Island which has led the company to expand its Christchurch base.

Stocks recently moved into bigger and more accessible premises in the Garden City and marked the occasion with an open trade day, where they also met racing drivers Greg Murphy, Paul Manuell and Richard Moore, whose cars are sponsored by the company.

“While our previous facility was outside the red zone and undamaged, it had become too small for us and we needed a much larger building to meet the growing demand for our products and services throughout the South Island,” says managing director Bill Strand.

“It shows our confidence in the future of Christchurch and, indeed, the whole of the South Island.”

The opening of the new distribution centre coincided with the Ruapuna round of the V8 Super Tourers round and Mr Strand says it was great to be able to have Greg, Paul and Richard attend, along with their cars and impressive race transporter.

“Our customers really enjoyed meeting the drivers and seeing our new facilities and three lucky trades people also had their names selected from a draw to experience hot laps in the racing Commodores, so that really made their day,” he says.

Mr Strand says the new building at 15c Byron Street, Sydenham, has a warehouse that is three times larger than the previous location and it now means Stocks can carry a full range of suspension parts in Christchurch, rather than just a top selection. This will lead to an improved delivery

Government’s announcement on plans to update the rules setting emissions standards for vehicles coming into New Zealand is a good move but it must also consider an even bigger polluter – New Zealand’s current vehicle fleet.

Proposed changes to the 2007 Vehicle Exhaust Emission Rule will ensure that New Zealand continues to import new vehicles that are built to the highest emissions standards and would mirror those recently introduced in Australia for the introduction of the European standards – Euro 5 and Euro 6.

“We support government’s plans and think that it’s appropriate that our emissions standards keep pace with overseas industry developments. The used import industry only recently moved to a revised exhaust emissions standards in January this year, so it’s a good move to extend the standard beyond the end of 2012, and consider any other further changes in 2014,” says MTA spokesperson Ana Zandi.

MTA says while there is a focus on the exhaust emissions standards applying to vehicle imports (both new and used) it is disappointing that government has not signalled any interest to look at the majority of the current fleet.

“If government are really concerned about reducing fleet emissions, there is a need to look at what we currently have on our roads as the real polluters of our atmosphere. Emissions entry standards only look at the 150,000 or so vehicles entering New Zealand each year (as new or used imports). We also need to consider the 2.4 million vehicles already on our roads. Some of these vehicles are of considerable age, are well into their life expectancy, and are also likely to stay in use for many years to come.”

There are clear advantages for all New Zealanders from in-service emissions testing. Not only would this improve overall air quality but there would be health benefits for many people. New Zealand would also use and thus need to import less fuel, and there would be cost savings for individual vehicle owners who would potentially use less fuel.

“In service testing of vehicle emissions is a widely accepted practice in many other countries. If government is serious about reducing vehicle emissions then we need to make this a priority and periodically test all vehicles in our fleet,” says Zandi.

Holden forges new partership with China

Holden has recently signed an historic agreement with Shanghai General Motors (SGM) and the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) to develop new vehicles for SGM and its affiliates in the growing Chinese market.

PATAC is a 50-50 joint venture between GM and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp (SAIC). It provides automotive engineering services including design, development, testing and validation of components and vehicles to SGM and its affiliates in China.

The long-term partnership will see a Holden team drive the development of at least two new vehicles for the world’s largest car market.

GM has 11 joint ventures, two wholly-owned foreign enterprises and more than 35,000 employees in China. Passenger cars and commercial vehicles are sold under the Baojun, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Jiefang, Opel and Wuling brands. In 2011, GM sold more than 2.5 million vehicles in China.

The Holden designers and engineers working on the programme will be based in Holden’s Technical Centre in Port Melbourne. The team will develop the new vehicles, which will be

underpinned by GM global platforms, and tailor them for the Chinese market.

Holden chairman and managing director, Mike Devereux, announced the partnership to employees recently in Melbourne with the leaders of SGM and PATAC.

“Holden is a valuable source of expertise within GM International Operations and we’re one of only seven fully-integrated design, engineering and manufacturing operations in the GM world,” he says.

“We have worked with SGM and PATAC in recent years on smaller projects, but this is the first significant, long-term project to partner our organisations.

“It gives the Holden workforce a great sense of pride to work on global vehicle programs like this and to see Australian design, engineering and manufacturing expertise exported around the world.”

Take part in Road Safety Week

Road Safety Week NZ takes place the week of 7-13 May 2012. The charity Brake is encouraging all companies, and especially those with fleets of vehicles, to promote road safety to employees and their families during this week.

“Road risk management is an important part of any company’s risk management. At-work drivers are so often involved in fatal and injury crashes yet simple measures, such as tele-conferencing rather than driving, insisting on regular driver breaks to prevent fatigue, and fitting speed limiters, can save lives,” says Brake chief executive Mary Williams.

“Road Safety Week is a way to stimulate company commitment to road safety. I urge all employers and employees to get thinking and get involved in Road Safety Week as a starting point and then put road safety at the heart of their risk management policies.”

Companies are encouraged to go to www.brake.org.nz for ideas to promote the Week, including

attending a free Brake webinar with expert advice on road risk management. During this week companies can communicate road safety messages in a variety of ways such as by sending employees e-reminders on road safety topics during the Week and asking them to sign Brake’s Pledge for road safety to end dangerous and unnecessary driving.

Companies can also engage employee support for the cause by running an office fundraiser, such as a car wash or a day when everyone comes to work dressed brightly to draw attention to the vulnerability of pedestrians and cyclists, helping raise funds in aid of Brake’s support services for road crash victims. Companies in Auckland may also want to put forward employees to take part in a dare devil bungee jump fundraiser off the Harbour Bridge in aid of the charity.

“Everyone needs to share responsibility for reducing the trauma on our roads and so we are pleased to see the focus of Brake’s first Road Safety Week in New Zealand is ‘Together we can save lives’,” says NZTA chief advisor safety directions Lisa Rossiter.

“In the past, road safety has been seen as the responsibility of road users and police officers, but the real picture is much, much wider than that and employers have an important role to play. If we all share responsibility for making our roads safer we really can make a difference.”

Eyesight wins technology award

Subaru’s EyeSight driver assist system has won a Japanese government technology award.

The five Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) engineers who developed EyeSight received the prize for Science and Technology 2012, Development Category, from Japan’s Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

The awards honour those who have made noteworthy contributions either to the research and development of science and technology, or to its public understanding.

It is the first time Subaru has won the award. The FHI representatives recognised in the award all work in the Vehicle

Research and Experiment Department, Subaru Engineering Division.EyeSight uses stereo camera technology to provide driver assistance in a variety

of conditions. The features include Pre-Collision Braking that can stop the vehicle if it detects

the risk of frontal collision.FHI successfully developed EyeSight to use one sensor which not only controls

the driving support system but also measures the distance, the speed difference and the relative positions between the front of the vehicle and another car.

Since its introduction in Japan, this user-friendly system has been highly praised for a good balance between its affordable pricing and excellent utility.

In New Zealand, EyeSight will be introduced on high grade 2013 Legacy and Outback models late this year.

Jetblack will star at Speedshow

Jetblack, the New Zealand-led challenge for the world land speed record, is bringing their full-size concept car to CRC Speedshow in July.

The sleek black concept car will dominate all other vehicles on display at this year’s CRC Speedshow at the ASB Showgrounds on 21 and 22 July. The monocoque chassis of Jetblack concept car is nearly 13 metres long and 1.65 metres high.

Ultimately aiming for a top speed in excess of 1,000mph to secure the world land speed record, Jetblack founder Richard Nowland, from

Wellington, says the Jetblack challenge aims to challenge for the ultimate world record by 2016.

“We have a New Zealand-led team working in partnership with world-class technology companies and some of the greatest engineering minds in the world,” says Nowland.

“The goal for Jetblack is to promote New Zealand’s engineering and innovation capability. Every single part of the car must be designed – there is almost nothing we can take off the shelf. And that poses great opportunities and challenges

for our technology, engineering and manufacturing industries.”

One of CRC Speedshow’s exhibitors – Racetech Racing Supplies – is contributing to the Jetblack project with a heavily-researched, custom-built race seat for the recently appointed driver, RNZAF Wing Commander Stephen Hunt, a New Zealander who is also an ex-RAF Harrier pilot.

Every world land speed record challenge to date has been made with a steel-framed car. Jetblack uses the first all-composite chassis being designed by New Zealander Dr Mark Battley of Applied Engineering Research Ltd.

Jetblack will be powered by two 35,000lb thrust ‘hybrid’ rockets produced by Space Propulsion Group in California, USA, and use similar technology to the rockets used in Space Ship Two, Virgin Galactic’s passenger spacecraft.

Auckland University of Technology is conducting research to assist the cockpit design and has built a cockpit simulator, guided by Dr Robert

Wellington who specialises in human-machine interface.

Jetblack’s wheels are designed by Glynne Bowsher, the mechanical engineer for the current world land speed record-holder. They stand 850mm tall and are forged from solid, aerospace-grade aluminium.

The world land speed record is currently held by Andy Green driving Thrust SSC for Great Britain with a speed of 763mph, set in October 1997 at Black Rock Desert, Nevada, USA and which set the first supersonic land speed record.

The Jetblack team plan to challenge the world land speed record in five or six years time and possible locations include India, the Arabian Gulf, USA and Australia.

Snedden on menu for lunch

From his appointment in late 2006 through to December 2011, this year’s luncheon guest speaker Martin Snedden served as chief executive of Rugby New Zealand 2011 Ltd (RNZ 2011).

RNZ 2011 was a joint venture company established by the New Zealand Government and the New Zealand Rugby Union to organise and deliver Rugby World Cup (RWC) 2011. RWC 2011 took place during September and October 2011. It is regarded, both internationally and domestically, as having been a spectacular success.

In mid 2012 Martin will move into his new role as chief executive of The Tourism Industry Association.

Prior to the RWC 2011 project,

Martin was chief executive of New Zealand Cricket for nearly six years, serving through a tumultuous period punctuated by issues relating to terrorism, politics, and player contract negotiations. Throughout this time, the Blackcaps (the New Zealand cricket team) generally maintained a top-5 five international ranking for both tests and one-day internationals.

During his own playing days, Martin represented the Blackcaps between 1980 and 1990, playing 25 tests and 93 one-day internationals, and attending both the 1983 and 1987 Cricket World Cup events. The 1980s is regarded as having been a “golden era” for the national team.

Martin also has a background in rugby having represented Auckland at U19 and U21 levels.

He is a qualified lawyer and worked in that capacity for 21 years, 11 years of that as a partner of a central-city Auckland firm.

Martin’s family has a strong

cricketing background. His grandfather played for New Zealand between 1914 and 1923, captaining the team in a number of those matches. Martin’s uncle played test cricket for New Zealand and his father played first class cricket for Auckland.

His family has a strong connection with New Zealand’s best-known sports venue. Martin’s great grandfather was part of a group who, at the start of the 20th century, purchased a block of swamp land in Sandringham, Auckland. That group drained and developed this site into the sports ground which they named Eden Park. The Snedden family was represented on the Eden Park Trust Board for most of the 20th century.

He is married to Annie. They have four children.

In the January 2012 New Year's Honours, Martin was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) for services to sports administration.

Still keeping chargeIt is a story of introducing the right product

Full-Frame Technology is utilised in both the positive and the negative grid, increasing tensile strength, which in turn, resists plate growth to protect against short-outs. The unique design also maximises resistance to long-term performance loss, by ensuring the structural integrity of the battery remains stable over time.

Bosch says the M-Series marine batteries are effectively a fusion of S-Series and D-Series, in that they provide an optimised balance of cycling and starting ability. Deep cycle resilience is a given for these batteries, due to long periods of current draw experienced while the engine is switched off and navigational, depth-sounding and fish-finding equipment remain active. Further complicating the design, though, is the need for consistent starting power, as these long periods of deep cycle current draw are interspersed with a number of short periods of engine use, during which the battery will not receive an adequate charge from the alternator.

It has long been a focus area left to auto electrical specialists and dedicated battery resellers. But now, as many workshops begin to see the benefits of diversifying their services, deep cycle batteries are becoming part of standard workshop floor stock.

The motor-home, SUV and medium-to-large four-wheel drive market is rapidly growing in both Australia and New Zealand, riding on the back of the populaces penchant for recreational activities and weekends away. Many of these vehicles leave the factory with the provision for a second battery in the engine bay, with the notion that their owners will likely fit a 12-volt portable fridge, or a similar mobile device. Without the alternator’s support, the current draw of these accessories is generally well beyond the limits of the traditional starting battery, as these were never intended to endure ongoing cycling.

Certainly, the resilience of the modern starting battery has improved – particularly in recent years – but the demand for dedicated deep cycle programs remains strong. Bosch says it has recently developed a new deep cycle program, the ‘D-Series’, which is dedicated to the local market and offers broad coverage of everything from small motive power systems, such as golf carts, cherry pickers, and platform lifts, to the most dominant section of the market, designed to support recreational dual-battery applications found in boats, motor-homes and four-wheel drives.

Supported by the patented ‘full-frame’ technology, most D-Series batteries can withstand 300 to 400 charge and discharge cycles at a 60 percent discharge depth. The full-frame system is utilised in both positive and negative grids and maximises current transfer from all sides of the plate, reinforcing ongoing output. The greater stability in the grids also protects them from distortion, safeguarding battery performance for the long-term.

At the top of the frame, and thus closest to the terminals, the D-Series grid design features more connections; that is, more paths for rapid current transfer directly to the terminals. Due to the cross-hatched nature of the full-frame design, its tensile strength is also far greater than many competing designs, meaning resistance to plate expansion is very high, significantly reducing the risk of power shorts.

With the introduction of D-Series, Bosch says it is now able to offer the optimal combination of starting and cycling battery products. When combined with the well-established S-Series range, Bosch says it has all recreational power demands covered, with superior starting and cycling ability available through two comprehensive product platforms. With new product merchandisers soon to be available, the entire range is an attractive prospect for workshops eager to capitalise on consumers’ demands for reliable power sources.

of battery chargers, Granite Digital, says its product line was designed to save the batteries of vehicles or boats

which are not used regularly.Granite Digital says that there was no

simple way for owners of such vehicles to tell if the battery was good, bad or if the

charging system was working properly. The company says that not knowing the state of a battery often led

consumers to purchase unnecessary batteries, wasting both time and money.The key benefit to the Save A Battery range of battery chargers/testers is

that there is a correct battery connection available for many different vehicles including golf carts, fork lift trucks, passenger vehicles, motor cycles, heavy duty trucks and marine batteries.

Calcium / calcium batteries and their recharging has been one of the most discussed battery topics of recent times and often has led to some negative consumer feedback for these types of batteries after they are perceived to have “failed” early.

It is quite common for calcium/calcium batteries to not receive enough recharge from a vehicle’s electrical system after a high discharge event and stay flat despite being regularly used.

The chemistry of calcium/calcium batteries often means that after being heavily discharged, they need to be rejuvenated by use of a higher voltage output charger to ensure they are fully recharged. Failure to achieve full recharge will lead to short battery life and is no fault of their manufacture.

All batteries whether calcium or lead antinomy chemistry, Gel or AGM construction can suffer short life due to insufficient recharge or being left in a state of discharge for long periods. A chemical process known as Sulphation occurs within discharged batteries destroying a battery‘s

plates as the crystals form, eroding the active material or paste off the plate’s grids.

It is more often the case that calcium/calcium batteries specifically need a charger that has a “calcium” setting that recharges the battery at a specific higher voltage. This is to ensure a higher level of chemical reaction occurs to reverse battery sulphation and to also ensure “gassing” occurs within the battery to evenly recombine the water and sulphuric acid in the electrolyte, ensuring consistent “specific gravity” measurement throughout the battery’s cells

It is common for a calcium/calcium battery to suffer short life when used in a system that does not deliver a high enough voltage to adequately meet these “chemistry” needs in recharging the battery. Again this is no fault of its manufacture, but a result of its application, usage or maintenance. It is important to note that calcium/calcium batteries can also suffer high failures rates where they are used in good recharging applications but where deep cycling or cyclic load stress can break their thinner plate design and construction.

Older vehicles can use calcium/calcium

batteries but may need regular monitoring of terminal voltage or specific gravity measurement to ensure they are being fully recharged. Simply ensuring a battery is recharged using a modern electronic battery charger from time to time can alleviate poor life issues.

Technology is still moving on and vehicle manufacturers are demanding more from a battery. Newer technologies are being used such as the introduction of the more expensive silver/calcium constructed batteries that have a higher discharge and faster recharge capability. The new trend is the use of AGM batteries that allow more cyclic battery use allowing vehicle manufacturers to achieve reduced fuel consumption by turning the alternator off under load or the engine on and off at idle.

As technologies develop it does mean that new batteries may become even more unsuitable in our older vehicles and electrical systems. However for calcium batteries, this currently can be overcome with the use of Multifunction battery chargers to maintain correct a level of recharging.

Stick with the right stuff Ever tried to stick a rear view mirror

back onto the windscreen after it had fallen off the glass?

Chances are it didn’t stay stuck for long and fell off again. And the problem, according to Bruce Walker of Griffiths Equipment, is most likely through using an all-purpose adhesive.

That’s one of the reasons why Griffiths Equipment took on the New Zealand distribution rights for VersaChem, an American manufacturer of adhesives, greases and chemicals for vehicle and home use.

“We were hugely impressed by not only the vast range of products they make, but the fact that so many of them were for specialised tasks,” says Bruce Walker.

“Sure you can buy glues that claim to stick wood, steel, plastics and ceramics, but they only work so well, compared to an adhesive that is designed specifically to do that job.”

And yes, there is an adhesive developed by VersaChem to permanently fix rear view mirrors to a windscreen – aptly enough, it’s

called the rear view mirror adhesive. It’s an easy-to-use epoxy product that comes in two packages, regular and super heavy-duty, designed for bonding metal to glass. The extra- strong adhesive is fast–acting and requires just a few seconds to make an initial bond, before reaching its full 3000psi strength.

Creating a stirAshdown Ingram says that the

range of Great Whites LED driving lights which launched in March, is receiving interest from both OE manufacturers and auto electricians who service truck drivers and four-wheel-drive enthusiasts. The company says that various bull bar manufacturers are keen to start designing around the Great Whites bar driving lights because of their unique benefit of being able to be mounted at any angle.

“The fact that these lights can be mounted vertically on bull bars opens up the opportunities available for truck and 4x4 drivers. No longer are they restricted to round lights placed in front of their radiator grills restricting air flow, they can now place their lights almost anywhere they please,” says marketing manager Shayne Quaile.

“Due to the proliferation of LED work light bars being sold as driving lights, it’s created the perception

that LED technology provides very little throw in comparison to HID and Halogen. We can’t stress enough that Great Whites are dedicated LED driving lights. This means that they’ve been designed specifically to be driving lights and not work lights.”

“When we designed the Great Whites, we wanted to have mass volumes of light from the bumper bar to 400 metres down the road. This is the crucial distance where decisions need to be made to avoid potential hazards, such as feral animals,” says category manager Steve Mitchell.

“The perception has always been that driving lights need to throw light as far down the road as they

can in order to be of most benefit to the driver. In order to gain this sought-after distance effectively light is concentrated and contained to a single pencil beam, as a result sacrificing the spread of light.

“At one lux (the same brightness as a single candle) at onekm, the average person would struggle to identify anything at that distance. When you consider that even a fully-loaded (64 tonne) B-Double at 100kph requires

127.1 metres breaking distance to pull up, it’s that immediate 300 – 400 metres that is most relevant for the driver,” says Steve.

“The feral animal one km down the road can run away well before it is a hindrance to the driver, but the feral animal 200 metres from the vehicle could easily stray into the path of that vehicle, necessitating in the driver’s quick response to a potentially fatal obstacle.“

On display at Fieldays

Best Bars Ltd will be launching its largest display ever with over 150m² of auto accessories for utes, 4x4s and large SUV’s at this year’s Mystery Creek Fieldays.

Innovative drive belt technology from Dayco

Dayco says it has produced the most innovative advancement in engine belt design and technology for more than 25 years, in the form of the Dayco W profile poly-rib engine belt.

The company that introduced the Dayco Poly-Rib engine belt design to vehicle manufacturers more than three decades ago has developed a patented replacement engine belt design which it says is truly remarkable.

Featuring an Aramid re-enforced EPDM compound and a unique “W” shaped rib design, the new Dayco W-Profile Poly-Rib engine belt range has

been designed to quiet down the most problematic engine drive systems.

Dayco says a patented new W shaped rib design ensures engine belt stability

and accuracy over a longer service life, which is imperative to the

silent, responsive and economical performance of modern day engines and their ever-increasing

auxiliary systems. Dayco says it has engineered each W Profile

Poly-Rib engine belt application based on the general characteristics of each

application’s drive system. Dayco says it is important to note that there is no

single engine belt design that will work with every application, hence why there are many issues that are created by replacing engine belts that are not application specific in their design.

The company says the new engine belt design has been developed and tested to deal with all too common aftermarket application issues such as squeal caused by relative slip between the engine belt and a pulley, squeak caused by a momentary slip, and chirp caused by relative misalignment by pulleys in a drive system.

The initial range of Dayco W Profile Poly-Rib engine belts will cover popular Holden, Toyota, Mitsubishi and Nissan models that have known problem noisy drives. The initial range of nine part numbers covers almost 300 vehicle applications.

Dayco says that repairers can also take advantage of the free Dayco engine belt wear ‘awearness’ (sic) gauge that enables easy checking of engine belt wear levels to recommend replacements to their customers when necessary. These gauges are also available from Dayco New Zealand’s belt distributor BNT.

“Our new Dayco W profile poly-rib engine belt range represents the most significant step forward in engine belt design for more than a quarter of a century,” says Dayco Australia managing director Arnold Mouw. “The new design was two years in the making, representing a considerable research and development investment by Dayco, to ensure that our customers are using the highest-quality aftermarket engine belt products.

“The new Dayco W Profile Poly-Rib engine belt range will gradually replace the current premium quality Dayco Poly-Rib engine belt range as existing stocks are depleted through our distributors,” says Mr Mouw.

In line with its expanding range of starter motors and alternators for the New Zealand market, Bosch has released an updated trade catalogue, featuring more than 780 part numbers.

Hankook for 3 Series

Hankook has announced that it is now an Original Equipment (OE) tyre supplier for the new generation BMW 3 Series.

Hankook's new high-performance Ventus S1 evo tyres – initially in the size 205/60 R 16 W – will be fitted as standard on the BMW 3 series versions 316d to 320d and 316i to 320i.

The brand-new 3 Series is the third model from BMW Group to be fitted with Hankook tyres, joining the new generation BMW 1 Series and MINI Cooper.

Hankook's European President and CEO Jin-Wook Choi says the 3 Series contract was another important milestone on the global expansion course set by the tyre manufacturer in the

premium segment. "Supplying Original Equipment for one of the key

models in the BMW range is proof of trust and motivation," says Mr Choi.

"With our new Ventus S1 evo we have developed a tyre that convinced the critical BMW engineers with regard to driving dynamics and comfort as well as wet grip and rolling resistance during the intensive selection process."

Hankook says the Ventus S1 evo is notable for its high level of driving comfort and low rolling resistance combined with distinctively dynamic driving characteristics.

This was achieved in part through a significant reduction in tyre weight and unsprung masses, thanks to the use of extremely light–yet highly durable–steel cord material in the tyre belt package.

This cord technology was developed for Hankook racing tyres used in the German-based DTM touring car series.

The Ventus S1 evo fitted to the BMW 3 Series also features a newly-developed styrene-butadiene polymer in the tyre compound.

By optimising the vulcanisation parameters at reduced temperatures a significant increase in the connection rate and a more targeted cross-linking of the rubber material was achieved.

In combination, these measures ensure a significant increase in grip level leading to outstanding braking and traction performance even in the wet, coupled with a very low rolling resistance.

All tyres for the BMW Group are manufactured at the company's factory in Geumsan in South Korea.

Father of the 911 dies

The creator of the Porsche 911, Professor Ferdinand Alexander (F.A.) Porsche, died on 5 April 2012 in Salzburg, aged 76.

“As the creator of the Porsche 911, he established a design culture in our company that has shaped our sports cars to this very day. His philosophy of good design is a legacy to us that we will honour for all time,” says Porsche AG CEO Matthias Müller.

Professor F.A. Porsche was born in Stuttgart on 11 December 1935, the oldest son of Dorothea and Ferry Porsche. Even his childhood was shaped by cars, and he spent much of his time in the engineering offices and development workshops of his grandfather Ferdinand Porsche.

In 1943 the family accompanied the Porsche company’s move to Austria, where he went to school in Zell am See. After returning to Stuttgart in 1950, he attended Waldorf School. After leaving school, he enrolled at the Ulm School of Design.

In 1958, F.A. Porsche, as he was known by his colleagues, joined the engineering office of what was then Porsche KG. He soon proved his talent for design by sculpting the first model of a successor to the 356 model line out of plasticine. In 1962 he took over as head of the Porsche design studio, creating a worldwide furore one year later with the Porsche 901 (or 911). With the Porsche 911, F.A. Porsche created a sports car icon whose form survives to this very day in what is now the seventh 911 generation. However, in addition to passenger cars, F.A. Porsche also concerned himself with designing the sports cars of the 1960s. His best-known designs include the Type 804 Formula One racing car or the Porsche 904 Carrera GTS, now considered to be one of the most beautiful racing cars ever.

In the course of the conversion of Porsche KG into a joint-stock corporation in 1971/72, F.A. Porsche,

along with all the other family members, stood down from the company’s front-line business operations. In 1972 he founded the “Porsche Design Studio” in Stuttgart, the head office of which was relocated to Zell am See in Austria in 1974. In the decades that followed, he designed numerous classic gentlemen’s accessories such as watches, spectacles and writing implements that achieved global recognition under the “Porsche Design” brand. In parallel, with his team, he designed a plethora of industrial products, household appliances and consumer durables for internationally renowned clients under the brand “Design by F.A. Porsche”. A strong and clear design

concept typifies all product designs created in his design studio to date.

The credo of his design work was: “Design must be functional and functionality has to be translated visually into aesthetics, without gags that have to be explained first.

“A coherently designed product requires no adornment; it should be enhanced by its form alone,” he said.

The design’s appearance should be readily comprehensible and not detract from the product and its function. His conviction was: “Good design should be honest.”

Professor F.A. Porsche received numerous honours and awards both for his work as a designer as well as for individual designs. For example, in 1968 the “Comité Internationale de Promotion et de Prestige” honoured him for the outstanding aesthetic design of the Porsche 911 while the Industrial Forum Design Hannover (iF) voted him “Prizewinner of the Year” in 1992. In 1999, the President of Austria bestowed on him the title of Professor.

Professor F.A Porsche retained a close lifelong association with Porsche AG as a partner and member of the Supervisory Board. For example, even after stepping down from front-line business operations, he contributed to the design of Porsche’s sports cars over many decades and repeatedly steered the company in the right direction. This was especially the case for the difficult period Porsche experienced at the beginning of the 1990s. From 1990 to 1993, he served as President of the company’s Supervisory Board, thus playing a major role in Porsche A.G’s economic turnaround. In 2005, he stood down from his supervisory board role in favour of his son Oliver and assumed the mantle of honorary president of the supervisory board.

Hammar reaches a new dimension

A year and a half after Hammar successfully launched the ‘leg over’ sidelifter concept, known as the Mega Transfer, comes another innovation– the Mega Reach, which takes the company into a completely new dimension.

The new Hammar Mega Reach is not only able to handle containers in a second row on the ground, it is also capable of double stacking containers in the second row and handling three containers high in the first row.

That means a total of five containers are now within the lifting reach of the new Hammar Mega Reach, all without having to move the vehicle.

The first Mega Reach sideloader has already been built and is operating in Hammar's home market in Sweden, as shown in the photos. It’s now ready to reach out to customers around the world, including New Zealand.

The Mega Reach has been designed for the 150- and the 190-series, which, for New Zealand means it is available on the 151 HS, 155 HS (Mega Transfer) and the 195 S.

The idea for the Mega Reach came from a customer in French Guiana, who had noticed the extendable top arm that Hammar has fitted as an option for many years and asked if an extension could be added that handles containers in the second row for optimising his handling in a customer yard. The Hammar designers were able to turn his request into reality very quickly.

Hammar New Zealand managing director, Fred Sandberg says the Mega Transfer has already won over a number of customers in this country since it appeared in 2010 and there could be a market here for the Mega Reach, too. It would be particularly useful in small, confined areas where truck access is limited.

“For example, an operator arriving at a customer’s depot to deliver an empty box and pick up a full one, would park next to the full box, unload the empty one on the other side (in second row) and then pick up the full box, without having to move the vehicle,” he says.

“Other uses could be in a yard moving and storing containers - actually I had a customer who named it the Hammar Reach Stacker.”

The Mega Reach shown in the photos is built on a brand new 2012 Hammar 195 HA, 20'–45' capacity and 36-tonne SWL sideloader. The chassis is an ‘A’ type, built in three extendable parts to be extra short in the 20' position and handling 45' containers in the full, extended position.

Hammar says it is the world leader in the design and production of sideloaders and has been present in the New Zealand market since 1992.

The company specialises in high-quality products featuring Swedish componentry and steel, to deliver a lighter, stronger and more reliable sideloader tailored for each customer at its South Auckland workshop.

Replacing torsion dampers is criticalWherever in the world that a tractor is being

used, there is a high probability that it has a LuK product which is bringing its force to the ground. LuK recommends to workshops that tractor torsion dampers (or powershift dampers) are a service item with a scheduled service life that requires regular replacement in order to ensure optimum operation.

Many repairers incorrectly diagnose torsion damper problems as factory faults within the automatic transmission, when upon removal of the gearbox it becomes clear that only the torsion damper requires replacement – a job that any repairer can do.

Torsion dampers are designed to reduce torsional vibration between the engine and the transmission that are inherent of the design of internal combustion engines, while maintaining engine inertia and strong power output through the transmission system.

Following detailed computerised analysis of engine crankshaft rotation and power cycle measurements along with the transmission design of many popular tractor brands, LuK engineers say they have designed application-specific torsion dampers which are either a part of the clutch disc, or mounted directly into the flywheel in the case of clutchless transmissions.

These LuK torsion dampers are able to “damp out” all of the torque peaks thereby eliminating excitation in the transmission. The genius of the LuK design is that the torsion damper must be able to eliminate

excitation in the drive train under all operating conditions, including engine idling, full load and during overrunning.

Simple axial dampers use a series of small coil springs mounted within a clutch disc centre which are compressed by each torque peak, smoothening the torque flow into the transmission. Using two or three different strengths of springs services the full torque output of the engine between idling and full engine output. This type of damper frequently has an articulation between 10 and 25 degrees. At the other end of the scale is the LuK designed long travel damper which uses “arc” springs to provide exceptional damping ability under all operating conditions. This damper design is particularly suited to higher powered engines and can have an articulation in excess of 40 degrees.

“While all tractor engines fluctuate in RPM speed, our detailed testing has shown that LuK torsion dampers almost completely eliminate the fluctuations in the transmission input speed, making tractors more quiet, vibration-free and more comfortable to drive,” says Schaeffler product specialist Brett Sage.

“Repairers should always check the condition and service life timeframe of torsion or power shift dampers before sending customers back to dealers and losing not only the repair work but possibly customers as a result,” he says.

Supporting local engineering innovationTRS Tyre and Wheel Ltd says it has recently

completed a specialist tyre and wheel design and supply project for Christchurch-based Southern Cross Engineering. The project involved finding a tyre solution capable of carrying 34.5 tonnes within specific height and dimension requirements. A further stipulation was that the load was distributed over a wide contact area to reduce the ground pressure applied by the heavy machine.

The machine in question is a mobile grain elevator used to unload grain from trucks into storage bunkers. The machine needed to be portable for transportation between sites as well as have manoeuvrability around the operating site. The elevator can move a truckload of grain in about two minutes, making it capable of 550 tonnes per hour.

After carefully evaluating the customer requirements, TRS recommended a 1200-20 Industrial Forklift tyre mounted in dual wheel configuration on all four corners. With a heavy-duty 20ply rating the tyres easily exceed maximum weight while the wide footprint offered by this large tyre in dual configuration kept ground pressure to a minimum. Heavy-duty forklift tyres also offered the additional benefits of strong sidewall construction and good puncture resistance.

According to Mark Prentice, the TRS Territory Manager involved in the project, this type of solution typifies the innovative solutions regularly

offered by TRS. “Often our customers have very specific

requirements for weights and/or dimensions and the correct choice of tyre and wheel solutions can be the difference between the machine doing the job or not,” he says.

Adopting a solution based approach, TRS not only supplies tyres, but can also manufacture wheels to suit almost any requirement and this ability to manufacture to individual customer needs was vital in meeting the requirements for this unique machine. Wheel manufacturing capability is not limited to off highway however, with the capability to manufacture for

transport applications as well, including fully-certified road-legal wheels.

How do you transport a few thousand miners from one point to another at the same time in some of the most remote places in Australia? Easy-use a fleet of buses.

Mining in Australia has a tendency to occur in some inhospitable locations, miles from anywhere. In order to get the miners on-site for the start of the shift, and home again, buses are often used as the principal mode of transport.

For some mines, even getting the buses there is a challenge in itself. Take, for example, the Newmont Gold Mine in the Tanami Desert. The site is 400kms northwest of Alice Springs along the dirt, Tanami Track and only one roadhouse services the route. Iveco Trucks Australia supplied four buses for the operation, built in Sydney and Brisbane and driven to the site.

A major bauxite mine site on Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria posed its own unique challenges. It’s not every day that you would see four buses on the back of a barge sailing from Darwin.

However, it is the Gorgon natural gas project on Barrow Island, off the northwest coast of Western Australia, that takes the prize for presenting the greatest challenges. Barrow Island is classified as a ‘Class A’ nature reserve, representing the highest possible level of protection for its flora and fauna and marine environment.

Iveco started negotiations with Chevron Australia for the delivery of buses to transport around 5,000 construction workers from the accommodation to the mine site on the other side of Barrow Island in 2007. By February 2011, 45 buses had been delivered.

On a daily basis, the buses must transport all crew to and from the accommodation to the mine site for the start and end of each shift. The average distance is 30km and speeds must not exceed 40km/hr. “Buses are used to doing low speed, stop/start operation-it is what would happen in an average city run. The biggest challenge was the operation of air-conditioning-a 15 minute drive does not allow for the a/c to kick in. To compensate, we had to install curtains on all the windows to try and control the temperature,” says Sales Manager for Bus & Coach, Iveco Trucks Australia Cameron Millar.

The buses must be compliant with the strict quarantine laws established for Barrow Island before being transported from Dampier on the mainland to the island.

“Any timber used on the bus, such as in the flooring, must be of a specific type and be rot-protected and certified for compliance,” says Millen. “The company cleaning the buses needed to be a certified cleaner. We even had to specify what oil the buses use.”

The company chosen to build the buses was Volgren Australia in Perth. “We chose Volgren as they are able to build aluminium buses, a vital consideration given the harsh marine environment on Barrow Island. We have heard stories about Land Cruisers only lasting 18 months before being rusted out.”

Once the base model was finalised in the Dandenong factory, the buses were fully cleaned and wrapped in plastic to prevent contaminants entering the bus. The buses are then transported to Volgren in Perth for final fit-out, cleaned again and wrapped for transportation to Dampier. The buses are then cleaned a third time and wrapped for shipment to Barrow Island. Spare parts must undergo the same process.

Routine maintenance of the buses is undertaken on the island by the mechanics on-site. The Iveco Delta chassis utilises an American running gear, which had many similarities to the heavy machinery used on the island, making maintenance relatively easy.

The range of buses available from Iveco not only fulfils the requirement for Australian manufacturing content, but is ideally suited to the harsh Australian climate. The type of bus

proposed for each mine site has been assessed on the needs of the location and every consideration is given by the Iveco team to ensure the right bus is provided.

Four of the buses supplied by Iveco for Barrow Island were themed to highlight project health, safety, environment, quarantine and community engagement messages.

The designs were created by prominent indigenous graphic artist, Darryl Bellotti.

Iveco Australia’s manufacturing base in Dandenong, Victoria was commissioned in 1952 under the International Harvester brand name and has produced more than 225,000 truck and bus chassis.

Kumho proves strength and economyKumho says its KRT03 Longmark

trailer tyre is proving both extremely reliable and more cost-effective in trucking operations all over Australia after being developed specifically for local climate and road conditions.

Kumho says its Australian commercial field managers liaised directly with Kumho R&D in Korea to develop the KRT03 Longmark to handle the unique combination of high temperatures, high weight loading and marginal road conditions encountered by many long-haul transport operators in Australia as well as the variable condition and alignment of trailer wheels and axles.

The secret of the KRT03's success in tough conditions lies in its use of a three-rib design with wider ribs that are more stable and rigid than those found on trailer tyres using four or five-rib design.

The result is a tyre that resists diagonal scuffing or wear and which can handle a mix of both on and off-road conditions, performing equally well on paved surfaces at constant high speed, in winding conditions or on gravel and dirt surfaces.

Using the three-rib design along with a deep, wide tread provides excellent stability in both wet or dry conditions while Kumho designers used a new heat-resistant intermediate compound to create the KRT03 Longmark for cooler running in hot climates.

According to Harvey Hawes of Kuhmo Tyres Australia the KRT03 is the perfect tyre for trailer operations particularly because trailer axle alignment combined with inconsistent tyre pressure maintenance plus marginal road conditions often conspire to produce uneven tread wear and diagonal scuffing on trailer operations in this country.

"We came at this problem from a very different angle, by basing the KRT03

on the very successful Kumho 956 steer tyre and the results speak for themselves," said Harvey Hawes.

"Transport operators praise the tyre and tell us that they are getting much longer tyre life and reduced diagonal wear or scuffing," he says.

"With the three-rib design it means that the tyre tread distortion that often occurs with badly aligned trailer wheels is minimised or prevented entirely.

"With poor alignment on trailer axles and also on prime mover drive axles the driver is constantly fighting the truck and increased distortion in the trailer tyres which have traditionally had four or five-rib design," he says.

"It is this constant rib distortion and the consequent slip back of the narrow ribs on most trailer tyres that causes the diagonal wear and scuffing that is endemic in many heavy transport fleets," he said.

"By reducing the number of ribs, making each one wider and more rigid Kumho has eliminated this problem without compromising grip and braking performance as well as greatly extending tyre life.

"With this design operators are getting the full tread life from tyres instead of having to throw expensive tyres away at 50 or 60 percent tread wear because of deep diagonal wear across a small portion of the tyre," he added.

Kumho has also employed a 13mm tread depth on the KRT03 instead of the usual 15mm used on most trailer tyres to further aid the stability and rigidity of the tyre ribs.

"The deeper tread depth on most tyres creates more distortion and means the tyre runs hotter, however reducing the depth by 2mm creates better stability, cooler running and ultimately much longer tyre life, again without compromising grip," says Harvey Hawes.

"The savings due to the overall fuel efficiency plus its long-term reliability means few operators serious about their business cannot ignore the new Longmark for their trailers," he says.

Harvey Hawes also pointed to the fact that many transport operators pay greater attention to the steer and drive tyres than to trailer tyres which in fact are just as important and make up the majority of rubber on a semi-trailer or B-Double rig.

"On a conventional 22-tyre semi, the trailer tyres make up 55 percent of the mix and on a B-Double they comprise 70 percent of the tyres on the vehicle, so they are not only vital to the truck's efficient operation, they are also a major cost, particularly if you are not maximising their performance," he says.

Kumho engineers have incorporated some other vital features to ensure the KRT03 is perfect for tough road conditions including stone ejectors in all grooves to maximise the clearing of stones from the tread as well as tread nib division for more even

load distribution and better wear performance.

The Kumho KRT03 has a 16-ply rating with a load index rating of 148/145L in the 11R22.5 size. The tyre has a carrying capacity of 3000kg in single and 2725kg in dual fitment.

Another export earner for NZ?Bernard Carpinter reports on the

cream of young NZ drivers making their mark in overseas competition.

New Zealand continues to export drivers, with a good crop of mostly young drivers hitting the tracks and rally roads of the world this year. Some seem to be well on the way to great things.

It has to be pointed out that just getting overseas is an achievement in itself, because of the costs involved – a season in Europe can easily cost a million dollars or more. You won’t get much sponsorship from within New Zealand, so you need to prove you’ve got the speed to warrant a team taking a punt on you and even then you need to bring at least some money to the party. Auckland car magnate Colin Giltrap has helped several young Kiwis launch their international careers, including Scott Dixon.

Round one, in Sweden, was only a moderate success but Paddon’s second outing, in Portugal, brought an unexpected victory. He and co-driver John Kennard had to retire from Friday’s stages with an electrical problem, but restarted on the Saturday with a substantial time penalty because of Friday’s withdrawal. They won every stage on the Saturday and hit the front on the final day when the leader damaged his car.

“I’ve always said to finish first, first you have to finish,” Paddon said. “There’s a lot more to come from the car and from me. We’re looking forward to Brother Rally New Zealand for the next round in June.”

Chris van der DriftBorn in New Zealand of Dutch

parents, van der Drift went to Europe when he was 16 after success in kart racing; he had never raced a car in New Zealand. Continued success brought him up through the different formulas and he was one of New Zealand’s drivers in A1GP before that series folded.

He found a home in Formula Superleague, in which each car represented one of the world’s leading football clubs. These were big fast cars

with V12 engines and van der Drift excelled, winning several races. But then in 2010 he suffered a huge crash at Brands Hatch, in which his car flew through the air and hit a bridge. Van der Drift suffered multiple injuries and

managed only limited racing last year.Now he has found a place in the

Auto GP series, which uses the old A1GP cars. And, driving for the respected Manor team, he has won again, taking race two in the second

Hayden PaddonPaddon, from Geraldine, is New

Zealand’s only current world motorsport champion – he won the Production class of the World Rally Championship last year. This year he has moved up to the Super 2000 class, for cars that are faster than the Production machinery but not as fast as the full-on world rally cars like the Citroen of champion Sebastien Loeb. They race over the same stages as the aces.

“The win was so emotional, that I even had a tear in my eyes on the lap back to the pits,” van der Drift said. “It hasn’t been easy getting a drive for the last two seasons, and just finally all the hard work has paid off.”

Richie StanawayTauranga driver Stanaway, 20, is now

part of the Lotus driver development programme and this year is racing in the high-level Formula Renault 3.5 championship. These are fast

cars and some successful drivers in this category have gone straight into Formula One.

The category has a new car this season, which is faster than the previous version. In pre-season testing Stanaway has consistently been among the top few on the time-sheets although this is the first time he has raced such a powerful car and the series is a big step up from the German Formula 3 championship, which he dominated last season. He also won a GP3 race last year. With his record of success and his position

to Europe and did well in GP3, winning some races and even leading the series for a time. Some bad luck later left him ninth at the end of the season, but with that experience behind him he is one of the favourites for this year’s series. He has lived up to that expectation with top times in pre-season testing.

When he was here earlier this year Evans said he was a better driver with his European experience and he showed that with his speed in his TRS outings.

Development Programme – the same scheme that helped propel Lewis Hamilton to the world championship. The programme includes development in both on-track and off-track aspects of the racing career. “The competition gets fiercer every time you step up a category, and having this level of support will really improve my strength and confidence,” Blomqvist said.

Tom is the son of 1984 world rally champion Stig Blomqvist and was raised in Auckland, where his English mother Kim still lives. He has dual New Zealand and British nationality.

Nick CassidyA friend of Evans’s and, like him, a

17-year-old Aucklander, Cassidy was the clear winner of this year’s TRS in a field that included 15 international drivers. Not only was he fast, he finished every race.

Now he is ready to race with the respected Fortec team in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup, in cars that have similar performance to the TRS machinery. This is a category that many top drivers have passed through on their way up.

As a reward for winning the Rookie of the Year award in the 2011 TRS, Cassidy tested with Fortec in October last year at Barcelona. He made a strong impression at the test,

Whittaker is New Zealand’s new Drift King

With two round wins already to his credit Whittaker had the stats on his side, but after blowing his good engine at the penultimate round of the 2011/12 Cody’s series at Ruakaka last month he was running a serious power deficit to the 7-litre Chev V8-packing Woolhouse.

Both drivers threw everything at their final battle and with the scores even, the judges called One More Time.

Incredibly they still could not split the pair after that run so a second One More Time was called and the pair battled each other for a third time.

It remained close but the nod on the second One More Time run went to Whittaker so it was he

who won the round – his third from six this season – and the 2011/12 Cody’s D1NZ National Drifting Championship Drift King title.

Woolhouse was second for the round and third overall with Rotorua driver Brad Lauder (Alcotane Nissan S14) claiming the final step on the round podium after also having to go One More Time to get an advantage over eventual fourth place-getter Jason Sellers.

Earlier in the day Tauranga driver Cole Armstrong (V Energy Nissan Skyline R34) had topped the qualifying order only to lose his Top 16 battle with series young gun Nico Reid (GT Refinishers Nissan S15) when his car’s engine overheated when the pair went One More Time.

Other Top 16 casualties were Taupo round winner Daynom Templeman (NAC Insurance Mazda RX7) who went down to Jason Sellers, and visiting Australian driver Nigel Petrie driving Matt (Jason’s brother) Sellers’ Nissan S15 who was dispatched by Daniel Woolhouse.

The 2011/12 Cody’s D1NZ National Drifting Championship Pro-Am title, meanwhile, went to Cam Vernon (E&H Motors/Gull Nissan Skyline R32), the Pukekohe driver claiming his fourth round win in a row at Hampton Downs on Friday from Matamata’s William Foster (Bennett Motorsport SR20 Toyota AE85) and Hamilton driver Jacob Hakaraia (DTM wheels Nissan Onevia)

Vernon again topped the qualifying sheets then battled his way past Round 1 Pro-Am winner Russell Sifleet (Nissan S14) of Auckland, Troy Jenkins (Synthe Nissan S15) and Hakaraia before meeting Foster in the Final.

The win gave Vernon a total of 542 points, more than enough to claim the 2011/12 Pro-Am title, but Foster again ran him close, the pair’s final battle also going One More Time before the judges made the call in Vernon’s favour.

The championship now breaks for six months before the 2013 season starts at Manfeild in October .
