The Decision of nuns
Age 12 - decided on a religious life.
Age 18 joined the Sisters of Loretto a romancatholic order . Age
21 takes first religious vows and choosesthe name therse du lisieux
after the saint of missionaries .

W orking with the poor On September10th 1964 she got
the calling to work with thepoor. She began missionarywork with
the poor of Calcutta.She replaced the loretto habitwith a simple
white cotton
chira with a blue border.In 1948 she took Indiancitizenship and
opened her first school in Motjhil to servethe homeless and
starving. Itwas difficult at first as therewas no money and she had
tobeg for food and other supplies. She did somemedical training in
Paris.

Shishua Bhavan [immaculate heart] for lost children or
children's home.1957 opens ShantiNagar [city of peace]a home for

F ailing health1983 1 st heart attack whilst visiting Pope
JohnPaul II .1989 2 nd heart attack, fitted with a pace maker.1992
goes into hospital in USA for pneumoniaand heart problems.1993 In
May she broke 3 ribs, In August shesuffers from malaria and in
September she hadsurgery for a blocked blood vessel.
1996 In April she fell and broke her collar boneand in August
she suffered malarial fever andmore heart problems.

The final daysMarch 13 th 1997 shestepped down as headnun and is
replaced bySister Nirnala.
September 5 th 1997 She died of a massiveheart attack inCalcutta
at the age of 87.Her funeral was on the13 th of September 1997. She
was given astate funeral
