Closing Bell: BSE Sensex closed higher by 231 points, or 0.77%, to 30,126, the Nifty 50 rose 48 points, or 0.51%, to 9,360. While there was no rude shock from the US Fed, Q4 earnings and lack of strong market movers will keep the Nifty50 consolidating on Thursday. Steel makers rose after the cabinet on Wednesday approved a proposal to make the use of local steel mandatory for government’s infrastructure projects, aimed at boosting the sales of local companies. Jindal Steel & Power and JSW Steel and Steel Authority of India Ltd rose more than 2% each Amtek group stocks trade higher after The Economic Times reports DA Capital, SSG Capital bid for stakes in Amtek group units. Amtek Auto shares rise 5%, Castex Technologies Ltd shares rise 6%, Metalyst Forgings Ltd shares rise 6.7%. IDFC Ltd shares rise 3% to Rs62.25 after a huge block deal. Around 20.4 million shares of the company or 1.28% stake of the company changed hands in three block deals. Banking stocks gain after the cabinet decided to amend the Banking Regulation Act to put in place a scheme to tackle stressed assets in the banking system totalling about Rs9.64 trillion as of end-December and to enable this capital to be redeployed productively in the economy. Housing finance company HDFC on Thursday reported 21.58 per cent YoY fall in standalone net profit at Rs 2,044.20 crore for the March quarter, beating an estimate of Rs 2,022 crore by analysts in an ET Now poll. The lender had reported a net profit of Rs 2,607.05 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. Shares of Sundaram-Clayton tanked 4 per cent in Thursday’s trade after the TVS Group company reported a 56.07 per cent YoY plunge in its standalone profit at Rs 38.36 crore for the March quarter. Shares retail companies such as V-Mart and Future Retail scaled new all-time high in morning deals on Thursday. Other retail majors such as Avenue Supermarts, Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail and Cantabil Retail were also trading in green. Shares of Merck climbed nearly 6 per cent in Thursday’s trade after the company reported a 76.42 percent jump in its net profit at Rs 14.82 crore for the March quarter. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 8.40 crore during the corresponding quarter of last year. Following the results, the stock jumped 5.86 per cent to hit a high of Rs 1,140 on BSE. Crude oil lost ground on Thursday, falling for a third out of four sessions and trading near its lowest since late March after data showed a lower than expected decline in US inventories. WTI crude lost 18 cents, or 0.4 per cent, to $47.64 a barrel after settling 16 cents higher at $47.82 a barrel in the last session. The Indian rupee strengthened marginally against the US dollar, ahead of the outcome of the two-day US Federal Reserve meeting due to start later on Wednesday. The domestic currency closed at 64.15 a dollar, up 0.10 per cent from its Tuesday’s close of 64.21. Fundamentally, valuations remain quiet high but liquidity is strong and therefore the trend remains on the positive side.

News: The stressed loans resolution package being prepared by the government
will empower the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to directly intervene in settling bad loan cases, said people aware of the matter. The central bank can effectively ask banks to sit down with defaulters and quickly sort out the Rs9.64 trillion bad loan mess. The Non Performing Assets (NPA) problem in the banking system is to a large extent confined to 50 large loan defaulters.

Bank of Maharashtra’s bad loan provisions surged nearly 170% to Rs1,833.37 crore against Rs679.51 crore a year ago. They rose 213.2% quarter-on-quarter from Rs585.41 crore.
Carlyle’s group’s $1-billion-plus holding in mortgage lender PNB Housing Finance Ltd is now the private equity fund’s third biggest holding in any listed company, the group’s co-founder Bill Conway said. Federal Reserve officials remained on track to gradually tighten monetary policy after leaving interest rates unchanged and signaling they were not alarmed by recent U.S. economic weakness. The committee views the slowing in growth during the first quarter as likely to be transitory,” the Federal Open Market Committee said in a statement Wednesday following a two-day meeting in Washington. “Near-term risks to the economic outlook appear roughly balanced, U.S. central bankers were unusually explicit in their statement, indicating that a disappointing first quarter, in which the economy grew at an annualized rate of 0.7 percent, would not knock the committee off its plan to raise rates two more times this year after a hike in March.
India’s export growth increased sharply in dollar terms in March 2017, up 28 percent year-on-year to $29.2 billion, the highest since March 2014. March normally sees a jump in exports, but this year’s rise was extraordinarily high, a bounce of almost $7 billion over the average of the first five months of the second half of the financial year 2016-17. India’s export growth had turned positive in September 2016 but had been growing at a moderate 5.3 percent average from September 2016 to January 2017, before rising to 18 percent in February and 28 percent in March.
