Y luego debes amar a tu prójimo.

Today's readings try to answer the question, "What must I do to be successful?" The readings begin with just one commandment: Love the Lord with all your heart, all your soul, and with all your strength. The psalm extolls God's strength and protection, giving us lots of reasons to love God. The Letter to the Hebrews once again contrasts the perfection of Christ as priest with the weakness of the other priests. Mark reminds us of the first commandment and adds a second element to it. We must not only love God but we must love our neighbor as ourselves. Mark does not provide a lot of details, just the simple understanding that to love God with your whole self and your neighbor as yourself is worth more than any other sacrifice. SECRET OF SUCCESS The readings are fairly simple and straightforward. Do just these two things--love God with your whole self and love your neighbor as yourself--and you will be saved. Deuteronomy and the psalm emphasize the importance of loving God with our whole selves. Hebrews reminds us that Jesus loved us as he loved his Father and so he offered himself for our sins. Mark says that loving God completely must also be accompanied by loving our neighbor. Jesus loved his Father with his whole soul, his whole mind, his whole strength. The love between God and Jesus makes them one. Everything hinges on the completeness and the inclusiveness of that love. LOVE We all love rules to measure our actions and assure us that we have done enough. Today we are given two rules that offer us none of that. These rules require us to focus only on love: love of God and love of neighbor. There are not seven or ten. There are just two. You must love God but you must do it with your entire being. Everything you are must be focused on and reflect loving God. And then you must love your neighbor. The first is key to the second.

Unless we understand how God loves both the lovable as well as the unlovable, we will never be able to love ourselves or any other creature or creation as God loves them all. The Gospels remind us that Jesus sought the broken, the marginalized, the unwanted to teach us how God loves. If everything about you is about loving a God who created and redeemed you, then you love as God loves. If you love as God loves, you recognize the weakness in yourself and in the world yet you still love that broken self and broken world as its Creator does. That is the only measure of success that matters. Today's Readings: Dt 6:2-6; Ps 18:2-3, 3-4, 47, 51; Heb 7:23-28; Mk 12:28b-34

Stewardship A Way of Life

TIME * TALENT * TREASURE

Seventy years are given to us! Some may even reach eighty. But even the best of these years are filled with pain and trouble; soon they disappear, and we are gone. Teach us to make the most of our time so that we may grow in wisdom. Prayer of Moses Psalm 90: 10, 12 (New Living Translation)

Salmo 90: 10,12

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS Art Buchwald, the longtime humorist for the “Washington Post” who died in 2007 is credited with saying, "The best things in life aren't things." As Christians, we know this statement to be true. Certainly the best things in our lives are not those items that money can buy or things we can create in the material world. Faith, hope, and love are more precious than anything we can see with our eyes. Yet, as humans we often find ourselves longing for the very things that we claim are not nearly as valuable. We lose sight of what is real and true. Paul wrote in the fourth chapter of his Letter to the Philippians that he has experienced both living with abundance and then with very little. Regardless of what we have in terms of worldly goods, Paul reminds us that God provides for all our needs. God may not provide for our wants, but he does give us what we need. The flesh seeks what it wants, but the spirit seeks what it needs. In a stewardship way of life, we must always remind ourselves that true wealth never comes from material possessions and money. True wealth comes from the love we share, the faith we develop, and the hope we bring to others. The best things in life aren't free, though. They require work, commitment, and fortitude. We need to cultivate these things daily. If we are serious about living life in this way, we will find that when our days on this earth are through, we really had it all. -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS –Published by Liturgical Publication, Inc.

and most important step in protecting against flu vi-ruses.

While there are many different flu viruses, a flu vac-

cine protects against the viruses that research sug-gests will be most common.

Flu vaccination can reduce flu illnesses, doctors’ vis-

its, and missed work and school due to flu, as well as prevent flu-related hospitalizations.

Everyone 6 months of age and older should get a flu

vaccine every year before flu activity begins in their community.

CDC recommends use of injectable influenza during

2018-2019. Ask your doctor if he has the nasal spray flu vaccine (live influenza vaccine).

People at high risk of serious flu complica-

tions include young children, pregnant women, peo-ple with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabe-tes or heart and lung disease and people 65 years and older.

Note: if you are over 65, you require a high dose flu

vaccine People who care for infants should be vaccinated

instead.
