We acknowledge the Kuku Yalanji people, and in particular the Kubirri Warra Clan, the
Traditional Owners of the land on which our school stands and pay our respects to
Elders past, present and emerging. We recognise their custodianship and role in
caring for and maintaining Country over thousands of years.
Principal’s Message
Our students have experienced many highlights over the last two weeks. Year 10
students have spent the whole week working toward their Cerficate courses. This
was to compensate for the lessons that they lost while at home during COVID.
Thanks to our teachers and the trainers from Registered Training Organisaons
(RTO’s) for their me in supporng our students.
Duke of Edinburgh held a 4 day camp at Tinaroo Environmental Educaon Centre with
18 Year 9 & 10 students parcipang. Although cold and wet weather made it
challenging, students have enjoyed a rewarding achievement.
Students who elect to do Religious Instrucon had a lesson this week – thank you to
Marne Plumbe (Chrisan RI Co-ordinator) and her team for vising our school.
Teachers have been busy marking and reporng so that report cards can be emailed
out to parents today. The level of achievement is a cumulave result for the year to
date and the data is used to calculate student awards for the Presentaon ceremony
next term.
In week 1 Year 10 students will be on work experience with local employers. We wish
them all the best. Teachers will visit work places to check that the student’s
experience is a posive one.
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate students on their hard work this
term and wish all families an enjoyable and safe school holiday.
Kind regards
Teena Seidenkranz

What’s happening in the Lab @
Mossman SHS There is never a dull moment in the Science Department at Mossman SHS. The Van der Graaf
generator has received a work out this term as the Year 7’s invesgated electrical forces. As you
can see in the photos it was a hair-raising experience! The Year 7’s were also busy compleng
experiments to invesgate the way in which simple machines can reduce the amount of effort
required to move an object.
Speaking of Physics, Mr Urwin’s 10 Science class spent the last few weeks construcng parachutes
and the accompanying landing gear to ensure their eggs were safely delivered from B Block
veranda to the ground below.
Our Senior Chemistry students have been busy mixing art, technology and science. Check out the
pictures to see what happens when skiBles meet science!
We look forward to another great term when we return aJer holidays. For the Year 12’s it will be
three weeks of study and then off to External Exams. We wish
them the best of luck as they contribute 50% of their overall
result across the science and maths subjects. I know that they will
be dedicang some of their September holidays to revision and
study. The Year 11’s will experience their first Block Exams in Week 3 of
Term 4 so they are also into revision and exam preparaon mode.
Have a safe and relaxing holiday and get ready for Term 4!
Yours in Science,
Mrs Zahnow
HOD Science & Performing Arts.
Enrichment Activity Congratulaons to Charlie Schild, Jack Davenport, Caylen Bhimji and Nikita McDonald
who successfully completed the Queensland Virtual STEM Academy: Grand
Challenge. They demonstrated a commitment for 10 weeks, missing one of their
metabled classes in order to take part in the following program.
Today’s society is heavily influenced by social media and data. We are constantly
surrounded by aBempts to influence us via these plaNorms and adversing. Students
have explored new skills and strategies to successfully navigate this new world, make
informed decisions and react intelligently to the flood of data in the world around
them.
In this Grand Challenge, students invesgated, researched and gained a deep understanding of a global STEM problem. They worked
collaboravely to create a social enterprise that will solve a problem and benefit the community. This social enterprise was then
marketed through social media to a targeted audience selected from stascal analysis. The teachers involved reported on their
progress and we are very proud of how they represented Mossman State High School. Anthea Crees—STLaN

PRESENTATION OF
AWARDS
WEDNESDAY 18TH
NOVEMBER
Year 7 Students Hit the Road
Throughout Term 3, some of our Year 7 students have had a chance to return to their old stomping grounds as a part of our Transition Program. Due to the restrictions around Parent Evenings, these primary school visits are especially important this year. With 9 primary schools in our cluster to visit, this initiative has been implemented across a three week duration. Every year, students from our current Year 7 cohort are invited to participate in the program by returning to their old primary school to act as ‘experts’ about high school. During the visits, Year 6 students are shown a presentation about what to expect at the
Mossman High School, they are also given important information to be passed on to
parents, and most importantly, they are offered a chance to catch up with their old
school friends and ask questions about the goings on from the students’ perspective.
As the Head of Department Junior School, I enjoy visiting the local primary schools as it enables our staff members to understand where some of our students are coming from. It allows us to appreciate what a huge transition it is for some of our new students and their families, as they come from very small schools, and find it quite a big change when they enrol at Mossman High. By arming ourselves with as much information as possible, we are able to fully support our new families and their students to ensure a smooth and successful transition.

‘The Bridge Award’ and ‘Duke of Edinburgh’ Update
Bridge Level 2 Speewah camp – Wednesday 26th
and Thursday
27th
August 2020
11 students and 2 teachers had a fantasc me climbing the Douglas
and Smith’s track. The Douglas track starts at Stoney Creek Rd and
climbs up to the Speewah Campgrounds (yellow track).
Students set up the tents, prior to the uninving cold showers. All
students had a great me using the Trangias to cook both their
dehydrated dinner and dessert. The BuBerscotch apples were
amazing!!!! We toasted marshmallows around the campfire before
heading off
to bed.
Bacon and
eggs set the
students up
for another
10km hike
back down
to Cairns via
the Smith’s
track (pink track). This track has some very steep up and down
secons with which the students supported each other exceponally
well. We had a well-deserved stop at McDonald’s to replenish the
energy levels for the drive back to Mossman.
