The History of Profession

The essence of hospitality comes from the ancient traditions inherent in almost any social formation in the history of human civilization. Respect, warm reception and high-quality service are the roots that will nourish the tree of hospitality. The English word “hospitality” is derived from the Old French “hospice”. Back in times when people believed in gods and goddesses there were hospitality traditions in Egypt, Greece and the Roman Empire. The main motives for their formation were: trade routes, pilgrims, priests, travellers to the holy places and many others.

Ancient sense of hospitality

Development of trade relations led to significant growth of the hotel industry in Europe. However, the hotel industry of the period was very primitive in hotels out convenience. Their sanitary level was extremely low. For centuries, the ancient appearance of the hotel was not changed. Basically it consisted of fencing for horses and a two-storey building, which was located on the first floor of a tavern and a bedroom on the second. Those hotels were already ancestors of tourist complexes.

classification of hotels. The International Union of the Innkeepers, which merged 1700 hotels worldwide was in charge of that.

The number of hotels was increasing dramatically not only in Europe but also in the Middle East, Southern Africa and South America in the late XIX and early XX centuries. In 1913 there were already 15 thousand hotels. Switzerland and Italy started developing of tourism goldmine.

Hotels have begun providing a variety of services after the Second World War. It was the beginning of the time of mass tourism, hotel chains associations and a period of lodging construction for different purposes.

Modern hotel base becomes the basis of the tourism industry - the industry of the XXI century. Nowadays we can find the latest hotel management techniques, new materials, information technologies, advanced life-support systems to ensure safety and comfort.
