MOSAIC REPORT 2017M-2017-003

Zero Organic Waste Management

BACKGROUND

As the number of consumption that keeps increasing, waste production also gets higher every year. From the household waste to industrial waste, all of them contribute to organic and non-organic waste to our society. In fact, Jakarta as the capital city of Indonesia produce 1 ton of waste per month and is still working on the better way to manage it. However, through generations, people consume and produce waste every day .

Along with CISV education content and theme this year, Human Rights, waste management becomes important not only for today’s generation but for future habitants and human beings. Because of that reason, CISV Indonesia collaborate with Biomagg for 2017 Mosaic to reduce our daily waste and to manage waste.

PROJECT SUMMARY Mosaic 2017 work together with Biomagg, the like-minded organization that manages waste from food

industry become more useful for others such as plants and animals. They feed maggots with food waste, then use the maggots to feed fish and chicken. Besides using the maggots as the organic food for the fish and chickens, Biomagg let the maggots metamorphose into flies that are called black soldier flies, a type of flies that doesn’t produce bacteria or virus but create another type of protein instead. The decomposed waste and the death flies are turned into organic fertilizer that is useful for home-planting.

Participants join several activities to experience the cycle of the food waste and how to reduce waste from home to industry.

Located in Depok, the suburb of Jakarta, the Mosaic involved participants from different age: 10 – 57 y.o. We split the participants into groups, so everyone could experience different activities in pit-stops.
