Welcome from PhoebeWith the weather getting warmer we are preparing for the second of three Residential Weekends for 2019. This is an additional camp which will be a vital part of keeping up with the high volume of referrals, but this also means we need to work harder than ever to keep the funds flowing into Mosaic. The Mosaic250 Campaign is doing very well; make sure to read about its progress and learn how to get involved on page 6!

Phoebe Administrator

Kate HydeMosaic Counsellor

I have always enjoyed working with children, young people and their families in various roles and have brought up my own 4 children and my godson. I live in West Dorset with my youngest daughter and my very lively springer spaniel. I love walking the dog on the beach, singing and sailing when I get the chance.

I feel incredibly privileged to be part of the Mosaic team as they are a very special bunch of people who all want to make a difference for children and young people who are struggling with bereavement.

I am also passionate about the difference that pre-bereavement support can make for children and young people and their families at a really difficult time.

Sandra ScottMosaic Counsellor

I went on a Mosaic bereavement training day back in 2011. I listened to a young person tell their story and how Mosaic’s support had helped them through a very difficult time in their life, enabling them to come to terms with the death of a parent. I decided that I would like to support this amazing Charity and asked to be a volunteer. I am so pleased I made that choice as I am now a counsellor! I have met so many amazing children over the years and had the chance to belong and work alongside a supportive, dedicated team of people from all walks of life.Thank you Mosaic for the fantastic work you do.

Welcome from Margaret CEO

Mosaic has just had it’s 12th birthday and I cannot believe it was 2 years ago we were busy preparing for our 10th Anniversary Ball. Where has that time gone?

During the 2 years, we have seen a sharp increase in referrals, increased our Pre-bereavement work and have now put in place Early Bereavement support for families immediately after a death. This has meant increasing the number of Counsellors and Volunteer Support Workers so the Mosaic ‘family’ is continually growing! We have a wonderful, dedicated team who we couldn’t do without!

As you will see in this issue, we are always looking for volunteers to help with fundraising – so if you do have time to spare, please think about joining us!

Margaret CEO

We would like to congratulate Kate Hyde and Sandra Scott on recently becoming counsellors for Mosaic!

Supporting bereaved children & young people throughout Dorset 3

Many of you know all about the amazing work Mosaic does with children and young people on a daily basis, but do you know about how we fund this? Read on to find out…

In 2017 Mosaic celebrated its 10th birthday, having come a huge way from its start around a kitchen table. 2017 the charity supported 170 children and young people across the county, but we knew there was more to do. So, we launched a new website, increased our social media presence and started a campaign to raise awareness and ensure that every child who needed us could find us and get support.

The results?

In 2018 we supported 230 children, a 35% increase. Based on referrals so far, we estimate that 2019 will see around 280 children getting the support they need – another 21% increase. This is fantastic news but to fund this additional work we will need to increase our income by 25% during 2019/2020.

This also comes at a time when political uncertainty and economic austerity means funding from statutory bodies is decreasing despite the extra children and will form only about 11% of our income in 2019. So where does the rest come from?

Many different sources: We currently receive a Children in Need grant and have some success from other local and national trusts and foundations.

We ask companies to choose us as their Charity of the Year and encourage community groups and individuals to support us. We also plan and hold as many of our own fundraising events as we can throughout the year, trying to spread ourselves across the county and engage as many supporters as possible.

So how can you help?

Volunteer at one of our stalls – a couple of hours is all it needs and can really help.

Sell summer draw tickets to friends and family and encourage them to sell some too.

Spread the word about us to colleagues and friends - awareness is key!

Attend or advertise the events we are putting on to ensure they make as much money as possible.

Keep your eyes open for possible opportunities in your area, do you have a local business that is looking for a charity to support? Is there a local event coming up we could have a stall at?

Perhaps you have a group of friends and would like to set up a “Friends of Mosaic” group in your area? Read more about this below.*

Any of the above would be a great help, so please contact me on [email protected]

Volunteering

At Mosaic we have different types of volunteer roles; helping at our residential weekends, fundraising events, family days and office admin.

In particular we are always looking for volunteers to help at community fundraising events. These events help fund the family activity days and residentials, so we ask all volunteers to help with at least one fundraiser throughout the year.

*Friends of Mosaic

We are looking for people to set up ‘Friends of Mosaic’ groups. This would be to set up fundraisers, volunteer at local events and to have fun! We would assist you with fundraising packs and resources. It’s a great opportunity to put experience on a CV and to feel good about doing something good!

What have we been up to?

Residential Weekend in April

LushLush Manufacturing once again invited Mosaic families into their factory. As one of our most popular family days, 41 children, young people and their families enjoyed learning how to make bath bombs, soap and meeting new friends!

“We had an absolutely amazing day, learnt so much and we were spoilt in being given so much to take home. My daughter even made a new friend!”

PicnicOn the 19th May we held our annual Family Picnic at the Orangery Suite in Merley House. Despite the rain we had 60 children, young people and their families enjoy a range of activities.

Jules the Entertainer made many balloon creations and food was provided by Butterfingers.

Bryanston SchoolBryanston School opened their gates to Mosaic young people on the 17th March. With an afternoon of wall climbing and swimming, followed by cake and nibbles, it was wonderful! Bryanston have recently decided to support Mosaic with family days and fundraising. We look forward to seeing what they come up with next!

All the bereaved children we support are invited to attend one of our Residential Weekends, which take place at Leeson House Field Study Centre, near Swanage. These weekends are a very important part of the work we do and give children and young people the opportunity to meet others, share their experience, learn how to express their feelings safely, remember their loved one and have fun!

Talking to others who understand how they feel helps to reduce isolation, build confidence and self-esteem.

This year, due to the increase in the number of children we have supported, we are increasing the number of weekends to three and holding one at the end of the summer term. All these weekends are funded through community donations and fundraising and we are very grateful to everyone who supports us.

If you would like to learn more about our Residential Weekends, go to www.mosaicfamilysupport.org/residential-weekends.

Our latest Residential Weekend took place at the beginning of April. This is what the young people said…

‘Camp has helped me discover more about my feelings. I’ve made lots of new friends, learnt lots of new skills and remembered my special person. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed myself!’

‘This weekend was so much fun, I enjoyed every moment of it. The volunteers were funny, kind and good at listening. Everyone looked after one another and the volunteers gave the best advice’.

‘Mosaic is awesome! I have loved meeting new people and learning I am not alone! Thank you’.

‘Mosaic is great fun. It’s good being allowed to talk about being sad. Thank you’.

Activities for Summer Holidays

Plant Pot & Bird Boxes What you need:

• Plant pot/bird box • Paint – ready mixed is best

Painting plant pots and bird boxes is another way to remember a loved one. Again, encourage your child to paint whatever they want to. Afterwards you could plant something in the pot, perhaps the person’s favourite plant. Read more about this with our blog: www.mosaicfamilysupport.org/news

Painting Stones What you need:

• Stones – you can buy these at craft shops or garden centres • Paint – ready mixed is best

Encourage your child to paint their stone any way they want to remember their loved one. This could be colours, shapes, something that the person loved or even words that remind them. The important thing is that they paint it however they choose. You could perhaps paint a stone at the same time.
