Principal’s Report

A warm welcome back to the 2017 school year- always an exciting time for new and returning students and their families and especially with a new principal!

I want to start by thanking the Morven School and community for the warm welcome you have all extended to my family and I. We are looking forward to being a part of this won-derful community and are keen to get involved as much as work allows us.

A new school year means a few chang-es and this year we have a few, first change is that you would have noticed or heard from your children that we are all in one classroom this year. This is due to our school being focused on learning and ensuring that every stu-dent is succeeding- we have developed a timetable that has dedicated teach-ers to a learning area allowing the stu-dents access to a second teacher to support focused and targeted teach-ing aligned to your child’s needs. We will be utilising standardised testing such as PAT, NAPLAN and Reading data along with the P-10 Literacy Con-tinuum to track the progress of each child and develop an individual learning program aimed at supporting students to reach their Focused Learning Goals that will be developed with you the parents and the students. If you would like more information in regards to the mechanics for how all this will work please come and see either my-self or Deanne with your questions or alternatively we will be holding a par-ent teacher information evening in week 3 and we would love if you all could attend.

Another couple of changes are that I will have my admin (Principal) day on Friday from this week on. Jenny and Narda have changed their day to a Wednesday as Deanne is now required to work in Augathella on a Wednesday.

Swimming

The days for swimming have also changed to a Monday afternoon for the whole school and a Thursday af-ternoon. The groups will be split –Prep/1/2 classes will swim from 1:25 to 2pm and the 3-6 will swim from 2-2:30 pm.

If you can help until I am able to com-plete my swimming qualification please let me know. Thank you to Anna Usher who has already offered her help.

I am looking at having Auswim travel to Morven to deliver some training courses if you are interested or know someone in the community that is keen to be trained, please contact me ASAP so that we can confirm a date, time and costing.

SSP Training (Speech Sound Pics )

Our school staff will be traveling to Charleville in week 2 to engage in SSP training I have provided a link below for those who are interested in having a look, however to give you a quick over-view, this literacy program will frame how our school delivers the teaching of literacy to our students. I will provide more information after we have complet-ed the training at our week 3 information night.

Parent Information Night

In week 3 we are holding a parent infor-mation evening, this will be a chance for you as parents to have any concern you may have addressed and also see first hand that we are focused on learning and student progress this year.

After the information night we would like parents to have a meeting with Deanne and myself to discuss each of your child’s learning goals, targets and the timeline to ensure that we are in-vested in the success of your child’s edu-cation.

LEAP! Playgroup

LEAP is starting back in week 3! Last year was a wonderful success with Mrs Burns coordinating our playgroup. We invite all children in the community aged 0—5 years to join us each Thursday morning at 8:30 am.

LEAP stands for Learning and Encourag-ing Active Playmates and we hope this program will provide our young children with valuable early years learning. Chil-dren will gain the most enjoyment and success out of this program if parents and carers join in the activities, stories and games.

We eagerly anticipate your continued support of this important initiative and look forward to seeing you there.

Tuckshop

Tuckshop will resume this Friday (29th January). Write your child’s order on the front of an envelope or paper bag, with your money included, and place it in the bowl provided on the table outside the staff room downstairs. Tuckshop is deliv-ered to school for eating at first break. Please remember to pack some food in a lunch box for second break.

School forms

Some forms have gone home today along with this newsletter. Please complete them and sign where required and return them to school asap. Thanking you :)

Kind Regards,

Mrs Cass Ahern

Principal

Year 4—6 Literacy Activities Here are some simple yet effective ac-tivities you can do with your child to help them apply the literacy skills they learn at school:

• read some of the same books as your child and talk about charac-ters, storylines and themes

• when assembling a newly pur-chased item, ask your child to assist with the reading of the instructions and interpreting dia-grams

• read the newspaper with your child each morning — choose an article to discuss and ask ques-tions such as ‘what is the report telling you?’ and ‘what does this word mean?’

• use language that encourages thinking and reflection such as ‘do you agree with what was writ-ten in that newspaper article or story?’

From the Classroom

The staff of Morven State School wel-come all students and their families to the 2017 school year. We are anticipat-ing that it will be a fantastic year of learning.

This year all students from Prep to Year Six will be learning in one classroom. “Break Out” learning groups will be lo-cated in the other two classrooms. This approach will permit all students to re-ceive consistent and targeted learning opportunities.

In literacy, there will be a strong focus on oral language and the critical aspects of the literacy continuum.

In numeracy, student learning will be focussed on mental computation and the numbers strand. We will also be looking at sharpening students’ ability to prob-lem solve, think critically and evaluate.

Students will be studying Earth, space and naturally occurring events in Sci-ence this term. They will be focussing on how these events occur and what impact this has on communities and the environments.

Mrs Crichton will be teaching Geography this term. Student learning will be fo-cussing on Australian landscapes, people and places.

On Friday, Morven State School will see the introduction of STEMs (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathemat-ics) sessions.
