History of Mortein

Mortein was first manufactured as an insecticidal powder in the 1870s by J. Hagemann, a German immigrant to Australia. It is said that Hagemann himself came up with the name Mortein, with a little help from his French wife: the famous name is a combination of the French word 'mort' (dead) and the German 'ein' (one).Hagemann used crushed chrysanthemum flowers to produce a pyrethrum extract. The powder was originally sprinkled about, and in the 1920s a squeeze puffer was developed. Hagemann introduced a liquid version in 1928. He combined this with kerosene and had a pump pack designed (the traditional 'flit gun') which allowed the insecticide to be sprayed into the air or onto the pests themselves.Hagemann's product was distributed wholesale by Samuel Taylor. Taylor ran his own business until his death in 1895. Soon after that , the business went broke, and in 1909 it came into the hands of F. S. Steer and Thomas Jackson. They were to revive Taylor's business and ultimately set it up as a proprietary company in 1937 as Samuel Taylor Pty Ltd. This company was to play a critical role in Mortein's development, mainly through the activities of its larger-than-life managing director from the 1940s to the 1960s, Bill Graham.By 1953, Mortein was already a household name when the Samuel Taylor company pioneered the aerosol industry in Australia by introducing the Pressure Pak. When TV arrived in Australia in 1956, a lengthy 'infomercial' by Mortein was one of the first TV ads produced and shown in this country.Graham believed in aggressive marketing and advertising, and saw the potential of TV as soon as it appeared. He developed new brand after new brand, including several which are household names today, such as Preen, Fabulon, Aerogard and Mr Sheen. Mortein was, perhaps, his favourite. He was a passionate believer in the safety and efficacy of his product, and once (rumour has it) drank down a glass of Mortein in front of a shocked government inquiry to demonstrate how safe it was.In 1969 the Samuel Taylor company was bought by the British company Reckitt & Colman. The Australian firm, under its British parent, introduced and promoted to the Australian market several of the country's most familiar household names over past. Mortein partners Lagos state to eradicate malaria

Malaria is a deadly disease; it kills faster than the dreaded HIV/AIDS.

Every year, over 300,000 people die of it, it accounts for about 60 percent of out patients and 30 percent of hospitalization and it is also responsible for 25 percent of death in children under one year and about 11 percent of maternal deaths in Nigeria. Aside the deaths, economically, malaria causes the nation to lose about N132b yearly which is estimated as the cost of treatment, prevention and loss of manpower, this effect according to National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) chips away Nigerias prospects for development. To commemorate this years World Malaria Day, Mortein, the multipurpose cockroach / insect killer partnered with Lagos State Ministry of Health to enlighten Nigerians on the scourge of Malaria and ways of preventing it. Speaking at events held at Ikorodu Local Government Secretariat and the General Hospital, Ikorodu respectively, the Marketing Manager, Reckitt Benckiser, makers of mortein, Kemi Saliu said it was pertinent for Mortein to partner with Lagos state government to enlighten the populace on the plague of malaria especially on pregnant women and children under the age of five seeing the harm it unleashes on these group who according to research are more vulnerable to its scourge. Speaking on this years theme, Sustain Gains, Save Lives; Invest in Malaria, she said Mortein decided to get actively involved in the campaign against the deadly disease because they believe that to save the economy of the annually billions of naira losses, the fight against Malaria should not be left in the hands of the government alone as it requires a collective effort to eradicate its spread. Saliu affirmed that even though Malaria is a serious problem in Nigeria, simple practices like using a quality insecticide like Mortein, using treated bed nets and keeping the environment clean, would reduce its impact. Enumerating the competitive advantages of Mortein, she stated that, It is very effective for both crawling and flying insects, because once spread from the can, it stays suspended in air longer for direct contact with the insects. Pointing out that ingredients for Mortein are biodegradable and rapidly disintegrated in sunlight and air thus there will be no build up of insecticide dispensed in the area being treated. She assured that Mortein is not harmful to human as it is removed through the urine after being deactivated by enzymes in human, adding that it is most suitable for asthmatic persons because of its odorless nature. Speaking earlier, Lagos State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Jide Idris, enumerated various measures put in place by the state government to minimize the spread of malaria and urged residents to sustain government effort by keeping their environments clean, using the treated bed nets provided by the government and keeping their drainages clean. He said the ministry decided to take the campaign to Ikorodu because study conducted in Lagos showed that Malaria was prevalent there. Aside enlightening the populace, Mortein also presented gifts worth thousands of naira to the first baby born on World Malaria Day at the Maternal and Child Care Centre of Ikorodu General Hospital, Lagos. This was in addition to a five-year free Mortein pack for the bab

The laboratory study evaluated the knock down and mortality caused by selected household aerosol spray treatments released automatically every 15 minutes through a diffuser unit. The treatments included MORTEIN AUTOMATIC INDOOR INSECT CONTROL SYSTEM HOUSEHOLD PROTECTION (MORTEIN) and a reference standard automatic aerosol product, plus an untreated control.

The efficacy test was conducted against seven flying and crawling insect species, including house fly, dengue mosquitoes, greenhead ant, meat ants German cockroaches, American cockroaches and cat flea. Each product was tested in ventilated laboratory test chambers according to acceptable methodology. The trial assessed efficacy against houseflies, dengue mosquitoes, greenhead ants, meat ants, German cockroaches, American cockroaches and cat flea in the same test chamber at the same time. The trial measured insect knockdown and mortality at 1, 2, 3, 21 and 24 hours after first exposure to the spray for flies and mosquitoes. All other insects were assessed after 21 and 24 hours. There was adequate group size and replication for all pests, being 50 flies and mosquitoes and for all other insects 20 individuals were used.

Against flies, mosquitoes, greenhead ant, meat ants, American cockroaches and cat flea, MORTEIN caused 95-100% mortality by 21 hours after treatment (HAT).

Against GERMAN cockroaches, MORTEIN resulted in approximately 53% mortality by 21 HAT. Significant recovery was exhibited, with mortality dropping to 30% by 24 HAT. The efficacy reviewer has concluded that the proposed use of MORTEIN AUTOMATIC INDOOR INSECT CONTROL SYSTEM HOUSEHOLD PROTECTION would be effective against flies, mosquitoes, greenhead ant, meat ants, American cockroaches

Mortein Rat Kill is a rat killing product

produced and marketed in India by Reckitt Benckiser (India) Ltd. This is very efficient product as it actually drove away a rat invading into my house. Around a year back one rat would invade my house regularly at night climbing up the balcony and then into my bed room and next into my kitchen. I was really disturbed at this entire incident. One night I found a really nasty rat running around my bed room here and there and then entering into my kitchen. It would nibble into the waste food in the kitchen dustbin and spread those all around the kitchen floor and here and there. It was so nasty and unclean. I hated this. I said my mother the next morning about this incident (luckily the rat never intruded into her bed room). She said she will get some kind of rat killing product from market. The shop keeper recommended this product as he said this one is really good. My mother brought it home. It costs less and it is very cheap. The packaging was good and there was a leaflet inside with instructions, precautions and antidotes etc. The shop keeper actually already said my mother how to use it and we relied on his version without taking the pain of reading this microscopic leaflet (Lol). My mother also bought some potato chops from a food parlor as we heard rats are really fond of potato chops. The Mortein Rat Kill is actually a black coloured cake. At night my mother put this cake at all the probable places where the rat would go topping it with bits of the potato chops. Well on that night the rat as usual intruded into my house and after some wondering around here and there probably went into the kitchen in search of food. My mother had also put some of the Rat Kill cake into the dustbin. The next morning we found some wasted food nibbled and spread all around the kitchen floor. I and my mother were anxious to know if this product has worked but also did put some Rat Kill cake around in case the rat was clever enough not to taste it last night. But well that night the rat didnt come and it came never again. Though I really dont know it died or not, at least it didnt die in my house but it is surely driven away. May be it died outside my house as they advertise that rats will die outside the house after having it.

Mosquito Repellent CoilsDuring 1999-2000 Manaksia entered into a new venture for the manufacture of mosquito coils under the brand name "MORTEIN" with the support of Reckitt Benckiser (India) Ltd., a longtime business associate of the Company. The agreement with Reckitt ensures a complete buyback of the entire mosquito coil production for the next five years. 40% of the Rs. 500 crore mosquito repellent market is held by coiled products, of which Mortein mosquito coil is currently the market leader. The Company also supplies mosquito repellant coils to Jyothy Laboratories (Maxo brand), Eveready Industries (Poweron brand), Anmol Industries (Target brand) and Dabur India Limited (Odomos brand).

Coil StandsThe mosquito coil stand is as important a product as the coil, as it provides the base to the burning coil. Made out of electrolytically coated tinplate, the product requires accurate press operation and the use of multiactivity tools for its manufacture. The product is coated with special organic chemicals to ensure resistance to corrosion, proper gloss and good finish.

THIS IS A SERIOUS THREAT AND NOT TO BE TAKEN LIGHTLY

What am I talking about? The darn Mosquitoes! I am sure that the general awareness on mosquitoes is high. My own definition of mosquito is as follows: Ah! Mosquitoes are those pesky ungrateful insects that keep buzzing around you and then suck the blood out of your system and in return gifts you with all the dreaded diseases there exists. Malaria, Elephantiasis, Dengue and it is also responsible for spreading AIDS. Weird insect, in the sense that it also houses or carries such dreadful germs, bacteria within its body and nicely, merrily dances around, whizzes here and there in glee and then injects all the trash into an human system who gets screwed badly. I undertake this task, voluntarily, to brief you more on this insects and how to avoid them through a many part series of reviews. Do read them all. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------

PART A: COIL THEM UP

The best way to eliminate all mosquitoes is to find their leader and bite it. Ridiculous as it may sound but this is what a kid came up with when we questioned them during one of our awareness drive in local schools. Well, on a more serious tone, best way is to kill their larvae by means of adding chemicals and toxics in puddles and non-flowing stagnant water. Though we would leave this act to Pest Control or Municipal Corporation (in my case), what we could do at our end is to keep our surroundings clean and tell others around to do the same. Yet, however much we try, these pesky warriors come in throng and attack us while we are sleeping. We may be quick to squash a few of them with our hands, but that leaves our hands dirty with blood stains and is definitely not a wise solution. And besides, what if we go out on camps or to some other locality, say, a hostel. What then? The answer is coils. I remember my grandmother burn the fibrous remains of a coconut in a vessel in the evening hours when the mosquitoes wake up for their breakfast. The result would be a smoky house but yes, it would definitely choke the mosquitoes away. But it would also suffocate us. The mosquito coils are built on a similar concept. Tortoise was the first brand that introduced such coils in India and is still quite a famous household name. It does have some competition from Mortein, Jet and now even Odomos (famous for skin ointment) has introduced a mosquito coil. I describe here Mortein Mosquito coil , though all coils are basically same with same ingredients and similar packing with similar action. WHY MORTEIN? Tortoise is definitely the most preferred brand that has high recall value and highly loyal customers. But with such homogenous products, I wanted to try other products to kind of test its efficacy. One such upcoming brand was Mortein by Reckitt Benckiser (India) Ltd. I liked their advertisements that pictured hungry mosquitoes that were frustrated because they could not enter a house because of Mortein. It appealed a lot to my sadistic mind. THE PACKING It comes in a square box with black and red colors. It has a picture of an inverted dead mosquito - zapped by a lightening, within which the words MORTEIN in Big Bold white followed by the words DEEP REACH Action are printed. The pack with 10 coils has a price of Rs 19. But the one I got had a bonus offer of Rs 3 off - some bonus there!! On backside, is a huge white and yellow rhombus with words POISON written. Besides there is a mention of chemicals used. Unlike Odomos, the instructions to use the coils are not on the packing. It says, Refer leaflet inside. The leaflet inside is a tiny piece of paper and it has instructions of usage, Precautions to be taken and First Aid and Antidotes if ingested. But this is crammed in 6 languages in a font lesser than 5, making it useless piece of paper. (Maybe they should also provide a free magnifying glass with it. The coils come in plastic bag within and a coil stand. The coils come in 5 groups of two, and separating these coils without breaking them requires special skills. I have mastered the act now! THE COILS Unlike most other coils that are green in color, Mortein has reddish brown color, which stands out as unique. Another aspect is that while others smell bad, this one has a pleasant smell. Also after burning, while other coils tend to suffocate the users, Mortein coils surprisingly are not suffocating but on the contrary smell good. Another striking feature is that while Tortoise, Odomos etc burn faster, this one burns slowly and steadily, staying for nearly 10 hours, making it the most effective coil available. Moreover the smoke spreads fairly in the room creating virtually a wider mosquito free zone. One disadvantage is that the coil is often found broken in packing itself. CHEMICALS USED While most other coils use Allethrin (0.2% w/w), this one uses a slight variant the d-trans Allethrin (0.1% w/w) which is more toxic to insects. Allethrin is a pyrethroid, a synthetic compound that has stomach and respiratory action and paralyzes insects before killing them. I have seen a mosquito that had fallen on the floor literally struggling to survive and then lying still, struggling again and so on and ultimately fall to its side with legs twitching and then die. Allethrin is also toxic to humans and should be kept out of reach of children. It should not be stored in kitchen. Every time one uses it, he/she should wash hands with soap. USAGE The coil is spiral. The center has a notch and has can be fixed to a sharp pointed edge of coil stand. This stand has a groove where broken coils can be attached. We burn the coil and then place it in the center of the room, under a fan, in the evenings, and with window in open condition for ventilation and to drive away mosquitoes while ensuring that outside ones dont risk coming in. I would advise keep this arrangement in a plate or tray so as to collect the ash that remains.

OVERALL If you have to use a coil, I highly recommend you to try Mortein coils. I am sure you wont be disappointed. I see only the new Herbal Tortoise coils that claim to be safer for children as the sole competitor

limitation: An advertisement for Mortein Fly and Insect Killer (Key No: RCPC 0153 30 K1) was screened on TV One. The graphics opened with a view of the landscape as visible from the inside of the window. A buzzing black dot approached from the distance and flew, thud, into the window. The "black dot" was Louie the animated fly character which said, "Hey you pests in there nah, not you kid. I'm talking to you flies and mozzies. Mortein has insect seeking technology."

Then to a visual of another fly spray product in use, the dialogue continued, "Look, this is how other fly sprays work. The spray often misses the target." Then Mortein was sprayed and the dialogue said, "But Mortein has statistically charged droplets that are attracted to you guys." With the visual showing Louie the wording proceeded, "You can't escape you're history. Uh oh Geez I hate Mortein." And the jingle "More smart. More safe. Mortein" was heard as the onscreen super showed the Mortein logo and the words, "More smart. More safe."

The Complainant said: "I wish to complain formally about the Advertisement screening, particularly during T.V.Ones 6pm News - for; MORTEIN FLY AND INSECT KILLER.

This objection is made on behalf of the Culture Group called CHRISTIANS who find the use of the HOLY NAME OF JESUS, as JEES an Expletive of Language -highly offensive to THEIR CODE OF ETHICS as indeed all Ethics are based on the original CODE OF ETHICS - i.e. THE COMMANDMENTS, the second of which states; THOU SHALT NOT TAKE THE NAME OF THE LORD THY GODIN VAIN.We hope that this matter will be amended as soon as possible."

Television Commercial Approvals Bureau (TVCAB) said on behalf of the media:

"The complainant refers to the use of an expletive in this advertisement (which she articulates as being Jees), finding it offensive to Christians.

It has long been our understanding that the expression geez is in fact a commonly-used abbreviation of the expression gee whiz. This is described by various dictionaries as an interjection, used to express mild surprise, amazement, or enthusiasm. Whether or not geez is, in fact, any sort of euphemism for Jesus is an issue that linguists could perhaps best resolve.

Notwithstanding, it is our belief that common sense suggests that neither the social responsibility direction of the Code of Ethics, Basic Principle 4, nor the threshold for generally prevailing community standards regarding offensiveness under Rule 5 have been breached by this expression."
