Rev. Artur Sowa, Pastor

The St. Francis of Assisi Community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

MORSELS & TIDBITS FROM THE PASTOR Advent I hope your Thanksgiving was great. Even though I didn’t grow up celebrat-ing it, this is one of my favorite holidays. I am truly grateful for all the bless-ings, even beyond Thanksgiving feast. This Sunday our holiday season con-tinues as we begin Advent. This is a sacred time and I hope and pray that we can fully experience this great season. This Advent, try to experience Christmas in a more gradual way. Instead of jumping into Christmas the day after Thanksgiving, al- low the symbols, rich colors, poetry, and music of Advent to wash over you slowly during these weeks. Take time to contemplate the pillars of Advent: Isaiah stoking hu-manity’s longing for the Redeemer, Mary bringing Jesus into history, and John the Baptist urging us to begin a new life. Maybe even put up your Christmas tree later than usual, closer to Christmas Eve. If you experience “the holidays” as an exhausting trial, let Advent calm you. Let its mystery re-focus your life and make you hungry for God. Sunday gospel in everyday English “The Arrival of the Son of Man will take place in times like Noah’s. Before the great flood everyone was carrying on as usual, having a good time right up to the day Noah boarded the ark. They knew nothing—until the flood hit and swept everything away. “The Son of Man’s Arrival will be like that: Two men will be working in the field—one will be taken, one left behind; two women will be grinding at the mill—one will be taken, one left behind. So stay awake, alert. You have no idea what day your Master will show up. But you do know this: You know that if the homeowner had known what time of night the burglar would arrive, he would have been there with his dogs to prevent the break-in. Be vigilant just like that. You have no idea when the Son of Man is going to show up” (from Matthew 24). Notes on the Scripture Let us appreciate Jesus’ reminder to “stay awake!” and be ready for the un-expected. Advent is a time of heightened awareness where we stay alert for “acts of God” in our lives that might just surprise us. After all, the most im-portant events in our lives often happen while we’re busy making other plans. Advent Manger Attention all children – let us prepare a nice and comfortable manger for Je-sus!!! During Advent, at all our Sunday Masses, we invite children to bring a piece of straw to our manger in front of the altar to prepare it for Jesus. This is going to happen during offertory, as we bring up our gifts to the altar. (we will provide straws for everybody) St Agatha Christmas Tree Tags Every year around the holidays we try to share our blessings with St. Agatha Parish (our sharing parish) and so I invite you to consider taking a tag form our Christmas Tree and support a person or a family in need; keeping in mind the words of St. Francis “it is in giving that we receive”. Please, return the gifts on Dec. 14/15th

“Project Linus” is a nationwide non-profit organi-zation operated 100% by caring volunteers. The mission is to provide a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or in need of something to snuggle with. The ideal blanket is any size from infant to

teens. The blankets have been donated to Hos-pitals, Crisis Centers, and Police & Fire Depart-ments to provide that human touch that someone does indeed care for them. Donated blankets may be placed in the “Project Linus Box” located in the closet area off the vesti-bule/Narthex of the church. Project Linus requests that donors place a note with their name and address on each donated item. We are in need of yarn for our volunteers, any size or color yarn will be put to great use. Adult Faith Formation

AROUND FOR AWHILE, by Fr. Ed Upton

November is the month when the church asks us to re-member and pray for our deceased relatives and friends; as well as pray for all who have died. The liturgy of the 33rd Sunday (November 17) fo-cused on End Times. November’s liturgical focus on death and End Times can be un-settling. Even though Advent begins this weekend, I want to share some additional thoughts that I began in November reflec-tions. Anointing of the sick This Sacrament has also been called, Last Rites; or Extreme Unc-tion. Anointing of the Sick is the most accu-rate name, because this sacrament is in-tended to be given in a number of instances; not simply held off until death seems immi-nent. The Church outlines when the Sacrament should be given: Before serious sur-gery; regularly for the aging even if not seri-

ously ill; seriously sick children who have reached the age of reason; a person who has lost consciousness but it can be assumed if, when conscious, anointing would be s their desire. A de-ceased person is not anointed. Clearly, the church en-courages the reception of Anointing of the Sick by articulating the mul-tiple situations when reception of the Sacra-ment is appropriate. The church wants this sacrament to be a source of strength at the time of illness; or as part of the aging process. The church wants to avoid a fami-ly, waiting until the per-son is near death be-fore they ask the priest for this sacrament. There are instances when an extreme event puts an individu-al close to death. A priest will do his best to anoint the individual at that time. When possible, fami-lies are asked to make contact with the parish,

when the person is conscious. It is also a blessing if a time can be established for the priest to anoint when members of the family can be present and thus able to join in prayer for their loved one. At St. Francis, the anointing of the sick is offered every Monday after the 7:45 Mass. This can be received for those “elderly” on a regular basis; or those ill or facing serious medical interventions. Also the parish has ministers to the sick who will gladly bring the Eucharist to the homebound. Just call the parish office to make the arrange-ment. The Sacrament is only called Extreme Unction (Anointing in the last); or Last Rites, when the person receiving the Sacrament does so for the last time.

HOPEFUL EXPECTATIONS Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Our liturgical year begins with the season of Ad-vent—a time of hopeful expectation of the com-ing of the Lord. On the First Sunday of Advent we look forward to the end of time when we will awaken to the dawn of Christ’s new day. Today we hear Isaiah speak of a day when God’s power will have brought universal peace and God’s Word will have instructed all people, ra-diating God’s “light”

(teachings) into all of hu-man society. Only when humanity walks “in the light of the LORD” (Isaiah 2:5), when all people desire to be instructed “in [God’s] ways” (Isaiah 2:3), will the world be set aright and our deepest longings fulfilled. The reading from Ro-mans calls us to “awake from sleep” for this final “day is at hand” (Romans 13:11, 12). Together this Sunday’s scriptures pro-
